Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is one of the major cardiac complications in patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) for non-cardiac disease. A better knowledge of ischemic and bleeding risks in these patients is needed to identify those most likely to benefit from specific cardiac management. We therefore assessed the incidence and predictors of a composite outcome of severe ischemic event (AMI recurrence, ischemic stroke), major bleeding, or all-cause death in this setting.

New and old GFR equations: a European perspective.

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is estimated in clinical practice from equations based on the serum concentration of endogenous biomarkers and demographic data. The 2009 creatinine-based Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation (CKD-EPI) was recommended worldwide until 2021, when it was recalibrated to remove the African-American race factor. The CKD-EPI and CKD-EPI equations overestimate GFR of adults aged 18-30 years, with a strong overestimation in estimated GFR (eGFR) at age 18 years.

These infections are still associated with high morbidity and mortality, underlining a need for continued education of the medical community. This review will focus on practical approaches to management of NSTI focusing on antibiotic therapies and optimizing the management of group A streptococcus (GAS)-associated NSTIs.

Purpose: Acute kidney injury is a frequent complication of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We aim to study the evolution of kidney function in patients presenting severe ARDS and requiring veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO).

Improvement in OCD symptoms associated with serotoninergic psychedelics: a retrospective online survey.

A renewed interest in the use of psychedelics for treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has emerged in the last 20 years. But pre-clinical and clinical evidence remain scarce, and little is known about the factor determining the magnitude and persistence of the therapeutic effect. We therefore designed a retrospective online survey to explore, in the general population using psychoactive drugs, their impact on OCD symptoms.

Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a severe form of idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS), a glomerulopathy of presumably immune origin that is attributed to extrarenal pathogenic circulating factors. The recurrence of FSGS (rFSGS) after transplant occurs in 30% to 50% of cases. The direct analysis of patient plasma proteome has scarcely been addressed to date, mainly due to the methodological difficulties associated with plasma complexity and dynamic range.

In the context of the recent re-emergence of mpox worldwide, the French Society for Hospital Hygiene (SF2H) performed a literature review of the transmission paths and proposed specific recommendations for healthcare workers (HCWs) caring for patients with suspected or confirmed MPXV. In developed countries, the risk of contamination among HCWs in healthcare facilities seemed to be very low, limited to contamination through needle stick injuries. Two additional contamination cases were reported and not fully explained.

Psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of human studies.

Psilocybin is increasingly studied for its antidepressant effect, but its optimal dosage for depression remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review and a dose-response meta-analysis to find the optimal dosage of psilocybin to reduce depression scores. Following our protocol (CRD 42022220190) multiple electronic databases were searched from their inception until February 2023, to identify double-blind randomized placebo-controlled (RCTs) fixed-dose trials evaluating the use of psilocybin for adult patients with primary or secondary depression.

Comparing the Effect of Implanted Peroneal Nerve Stimulation and Ankle-Foot Orthosis on Gait Kinematics in Chronic Hemiparesis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objective: Impaired ankle dorsiflexion in hemiparesis may be treated with ankle-foot orthosis or functional electrical stimulation. Semi-implanted selective functional electrical stimulation uses independent stimulations of deep and superficial peroneal nerves. The aim of this study was to compare gait kinematics using ankle-foot orthosis or semi-implanted selective functional electrical stimulation over 6 months in hemiparesis.

Accelerated aging in bipolar disorders: An exploratory study of six epigenetic clocks.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and severe psychiatric disorder associated with significant medical morbidity and reduced life expectancy. In this study, we assessed accelerated epigenetic aging in individuals with BD using various DNA methylation (DNAm)-based markers. For this purpose, we used five epigenetic clocks (Horvath, Hannum, EN, PhenoAge, and GrimAge) and a DNAm-based telomere length clock (DNAmTL).

Development and validation of a new equation based on plasma creatinine and muscle mass assessed by CT scan to estimate glomerular filtration rate: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Inter-individual variations of non-glomerular filtration rate (GFR) determinants of serum creatinine, such as muscle mass, account for the imperfect performance of estimated GFR (eGFR) equations. We aimed to develop an equation based on creatinine and total lumbar muscle cross-sectional area measured by unenhanced computed tomography scan at the third lumbar vertebra.

Methods: The muscle mass-based eGFR (MMB-eGFR) equation was developed in 118 kidney donor candidates (iohexol clearance) using linear regression.

Assessment of coronary microcirculation alterations in a porcine model of no-reflow using ultrasound localization microscopy: a proof of concept study.

Background: Coronary microvascular obstruction also known as no-reflow phenomenon is a major issue during myocardial infarction that bears important prognostic implications. Alterations of the microvascular network remains however challenging to assess as there is no imaging modality in the clinics that can image directly the coronary microvascular vessels. Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (ULM) imaging was recently introduced to map microvascular flows at high spatial resolution (∼10 μm).

Patterns of pharmacotherapy for bipolar disorder: A GBC survey.

Objectives: To understand treatment practices for bipolar disorders (BD), this study leveraged the Global Bipolar Cohort collaborative network to investigate pharmacotherapeutic treatment patterns in multiple cohorts of well-characterized individuals with BD in North America, Europe, and Australia.

Methods: Data on pharmacotherapy, demographics, diagnostic subtypes, and comorbidities were provided from each participating cohort. Individual site and regional pooled proportional meta-analyses with generalized linear mixed methods were conducted to identify prescription patterns.
