Endobronchial coil treatment (ECT) is a minimally invasive procedure developed for palliative care of patients with severe emphysema. ECT has demonstrated a decrease in hyperinflation, an improvement in quality of life, and an acceptable safety profile in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Because alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a classical exclusion criterion in RCTs, there is no available data for ECT in AATD.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how the timing of diagnosis impacts the characteristics and outcomes of infective endocarditis (IE), comparing cases diagnosed within one month of first symptoms to those diagnosed later.
  • Of the 486 IE cases analyzed, 25% were diagnosed late; early diagnosis was linked to female patients, prosthetic valves, and specific pathogens like staphylococci.
  • The findings indicated that while in-hospital mortality was higher in early-diagnosed cases, late diagnosis allowed for more valve surgeries and better overall prognosis.

Background: In 2013, the French Health Authority approved the use of HIV self-tests in pharmacies for the general public. This screening tool will allow an increase in the number of screenings and a reduction in the delay between infection and diagnosis, thus reducing the risk of further infections. We previously compared 5 HIV-self test candidates (4 oral fluid and one whole blood) and demonstrated that the whole blood HIV test exhibited the optimal level of performance (sensitivity/specificity).

Mast cells are hematopoietic cells involved in inflammation and immunity and have been recognized also as important effector cells in kidney inflammation. In humans, only a few mast cells reside in kidneys constitutively but in progressive renal diseases their numbers increase substantially representing an essential part of the interstitial infiltrate of inflammatory cells. Recent data obtained in experimental animal models have emphasized a complex role of these cells and the mediators they release as they have been shown both to promote, but also to protect from disease and fibrosis development.

Purpose: Tendinopathy is a frequent and ubiquitous disease developing early disorganized collagen fibers with neo-angiogenesis on histology. Peritendinous injection of corticosteroid is the commonly accepted strategy despite the absence of inflammation in tendinopathy. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) might be a useful strategy to rapidly accelerate healing of the tendinopathy but there is a lack ok knowledge about the amount of PRP to be injected and the opportunity of a second injection in case of partial pain relief.
