Laboratory practices for the diagnosis and management of mucormycosis in France, 2024.

This study investigates the diagnostic practices for mucormycosis among 30 French University Hospital mycology laboratories, in 2024. All laboratories perform both direct examination and culture, with fluorescent brighteners being the most commonly used method for direct examination. While 77 % of the participating laboratories routinely identify Mucorales to the species level, with 70 % having adopted Mucorales-specific quantitative PCR, primarily for the diagnosis of invasive fungal infections.

Association between acute complications in PMM2-CDG patients and haemostasis anomalies: Data from a multicentric study and suggestions for acute management.

Objectives: Patients with PMM2-CDG develop acute events (stroke-like episodes (SLEs), thromboses, haemorrhages, seizures, migraines) associated with both clotting factors (factor XI) and coagulation inhibitors (antithrombin, protein C and protein S) deficiencies. The aim of the study was to correlate acute events to haemostasis and propose practical guidelines.

Methods: In this multicentric retrospective study, we evaluated clinical, radiological, haemostasis and electroencephalography data for PMM2-CDG patients hospitalized for acute events.

Effectiveness of Simulation-Based Training on Transesophageal Echocardiography Learning: The SIMULATOR Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Evidence is scarce on the effectiveness of simulation-based training in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of simulation-based teaching vs traditional teaching of TEE knowledge and skills of cardiology fellows.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Between November 2020 and November 2021, all consecutive cardiology fellows inexperienced in TEE from 42 French university centers were randomized (1:1; n = 324) into 2 groups with or without simulation support.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: Inputs of BNP, NT-proBNP and Galectin-3.

Background: Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, a cohort of Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) patients has been described. Cardiac involvement is found in 80-85% patients, typically with cardiac dysfunction with or without cardiogenic shock. Here, three cardiac biomarkers, BNP, NT-proBNP and Galectin-3 were compared for the first time in MIS-C in a unique cohort of hospitalized French children.

Emergency 3D-printing of medical devices came out as a potential solution to tackle shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic. Manufacturing medical devices in small series within hospitals is an exciting perspective in crisis management. Health professionals and additive manufacturing technology are ready for this revolution but regulative adaptations are still required.

Rituximab for recurrence of primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis after kidney transplantation: Results of a nationwide study.

Rituximab (RTX) therapy for primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis recurrence after kidney transplantation (KT) has been extensively debated. We aimed to assess the benefit of adding RTX to plasmapheresis (PP), corticosteroids, and calcineurin inhibitors (standard of care, SOC). We identified 148 adult patients who received KT in 12/2004-12/2018 at 21 French centers: 109 received SOC (Group 1, G1), and 39 received immediate RTX along with SOC (Group 2, G2).

A governmental program to encourage medical students to deliver primary prevention: experiment and evaluation in a French faculty of medicine.

Background: A public health student service was set up by the French government in 2018 with the aim of increasing awareness of primary health promotion among the 47,000 students of medicine and other health professions. It is an annual program involving community-based actions on nutrition, physical activity, addiction or sexuality. Our objective was to evaluate its implementation at local level and the different experiences of the stakeholders.

Antifungal susceptibility testing practices in mycology laboratories in France, 2018.

A survey of mycology laboratories for antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) was undertaken in France in 2018, to better understand the difference in practices between the participating centers and to identify the difficulties they may encounter as well as eventual gaps with published standards and guidelines. The survey captured information from 45 mycology laboratories in France on how they perform AFST (number of strains tested, preferred method, technical and quality aspects, interpretation of the MIC values, reading and interpretation difficulties). Results indicated that 86% of respondents used Etest as AFST method, with a combination of one to seven antifungal agents tested.
