Limited applicability and implementation of the international oncology treatments guidelines in low- and middle-income countries, an example from the Mediterranean area borders.

Cancer Radiother

September 2023

Department of Radiation Oncology, Institute de cancérologie de l'Ouest (ICO) centre René-Gauducheau, Saint-Herblain, France; Université de Nantes, Nantes, France.

The quality of cancer care in the modern era is based on a precise diagnosis and personalized therapy according to patients and their disease based on validated guidelines with a high level of evidence. During cancer patients' management, the objective is first to make an accurate diagnosis and then offer the best treatment, validated beforehand in a multidisciplinary board meeting, with the best benefit/risk ratio. In the context of many low- and middle-income countries, the limited available means do not allow an adequate offer, resulting in non-optimal patients' care.

Background: Chest computed tomography (CT) was reported to improve the diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) as compared to chest X-ray (CXR). The aim of this study is to describe the CT-patterns of CAP in a large population visiting the emergency department and to see if some of them are more frequently missed on CXR.

Materials And Methods: This is an ancillary analysis of the prospective multicenter ESCAPED study including 319 patients.

February 2022

Université Côte d'Azur, INSERM, CNRS, IPMC, team labeled "Laboratory of Excellence (LABEX) Distalz", 660 route des Lucioles, 06560, Sophia-Antipolis, Valbonne, France.

Parkin (PK) is an E3-ligase harboring tumor suppressor properties that has been associated to various cancer types including glioblastoma (GBM). However, PK is also a transcription factor (TF), the contribution of which to GBM etiology remains to be established. The impact of PK on GBM cells proliferation was analyzed by real-time impedance measurement and flow cytometry.

Covid-19 is responsible for myocardial injury in many infected patients, which is associated with severe disease and critical illness. The mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 may cause myocardial damage involve direct effect of the virus in cardiac cells and indirect effect due to the clinical consequences of Covid-19. Cardiomyocytes are well known to express Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme-2 receptors (ACE-2) to facilitate the virus cell entry, which could explain the occurrence of myocarditis, functional alterations in the myocardium, and more rarely, myocardial infarction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the long-term efficacy of fibrin glue injections for treating perianal fistulas in Crohn's disease patients, following a previous short-term success shown in earlier trials.
  • It involved 119 patients who had undergone at least one fibrin glue injection between 2004 and 2015, with a primary focus on the rate of complete clinical remission after one year.
  • Results indicated a 45.4% remission rate at one year, with combination therapy showing significantly better outcomes, suggesting that fibrin glue may be a safe and effective adjunct treatment alongside conventional therapies.

Background: During the last decade, our understanding of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) physiology has dramatically improved, thanks to the discoveries of both the glymphatic system and lymphatic vessels lining the dura mater in human brains.

Evidence Acquisition: We detail the recent basic science findings in the field of CSF physiology and connect them with our current understanding of the pathophysiology of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH).

Results: Transverse sinus (TS) stenoses seem to play a major causative role in the symptoms of IIH, as a result of a decrease in the pressure gradient between the venous system and the subarachnoid space.

Aims: We investigated the role of TG to HDL ratio (TG/HDL) on atherosclerosis extension, defined as presence of coronary artery calcium (CAC), carotid and femoral plaque, in prediabetes or newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: We performed a retrospective, cross-sectional, single centre study involving 440 prediabetes or newly diagnosed controlled T2D subjects. Participants underwent CAC analysis by computed tomography and carotid and femoral plaque evaluation by ultrasonography and were stratified in high TG/HDL (H-TG/HDL) or low TG/HDL (L-TG/HDL) group according to TG/HDL median value.

Emergent and reemergent infectious diseases. The notion of emerging and re-emerging infection has been developed recently, even if it rests on an already former concept. The emergence is doubtless delicate to define but can globally be an infectious disease by which the real incidence increases for a population and a geographical zone given to a period of time.

Electronic address:

Objective: Freezing of gait (FOG) represents a major burden for Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. High-frequency (130-Hz) subthalamic deep-brain-stimulation (STN-DBS) has been reported to aggravate FOG whereas lowering the frequency to 60-80 Hz improves FOG. To further understand the effects of STN-DBS on FOG, we assessed the effects of 80-Hz and 130-Hz STN-DBS on gait initiation performance, in relation to motor and executive function processing.

Article Synopsis
  • * Research has shown that genetic differences in the general population can affect how HD develops, and studying characteristics like white matter properties may help in understanding how the disease progresses.
  • * A study found three distinct patterns of white matter diffusivity that are common in both healthy individuals and those at risk for HD, with these patterns linked to the severity of the disorder and specific task performance in cognitive, motor, and limbic networks.
