With over 55 million people globally affected by dementia and nearly 10 million new cases reported annually, Alzheimer's disease is a prevalent and challenging neurodegenerative disorder. Despite significant advancements in machine learning techniques for Alzheimer's disease detection, the widespread adoption of deep learning models raises concerns about their explainability. The lack of explainability in deep learning models for online handwriting analysis is a critical gap in the literature in the context of Alzheimer's disease detection.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of early morphologic ultrasound in women with atypical first trimester serum markers when combined with Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT).
  • - Conducted at a single center over four years, the research analyzed data from 163 women, finding that while early ultrasounds detected serious cases like severe IUGR, they generally did not improve management in most cases.
  • - The conclusions suggest that routine early ultrasounds may be unnecessary due to the reliability of NIPT, and that ultrasounds should be reserved for cases with serum marker levels below 0.25 MoM to better identify conditions like triploidy.

Harnessing Redox Disruption to Treat Human Herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) Related Malignancies.

Antioxidants (Basel)

December 2022

INSERM, Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique (iPLESP), AP-HP, Department of Virology, Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière, Sorbonne Université, 75013 Paris, France.

Reprogrammed metabolism is regarded as a hallmark of cancer and offers a selective advantage to tumor cells during carcinogenesis. The redox equilibrium is necessary for growth, spread and the antioxidant pathways are boosted following Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production to prevent cell damage in tumor cells. Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), the etiologic agent of Kaposi sarcoma KS and primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), is an oncogenic virus that disrupts cell survival-related molecular signaling pathways leading to immune host evasion, cells growths, angiogenesis and inflammatory tumor-environment.

Background: In early terminations of pregnancy for fetal anomaly (TOPFA) without identified cytogenetic abnormality, a fetal autopsy is recommended for diagnostic purposes, to guide genetic counseling. Medical induction, which allows analysis of a complete fetus, is generally preferred over surgical vacuum aspiration. Our objective was to assess the diagnostic value of fetal autopsies in these early terminations, relative to the first-trimester ultrasound, overall and by termination method.

Implicit biases and differential perinatal care for migrant women: Methodological framework and study protocol of the BiP study part 3.

J Gynecol Obstet Hum Reprod

April 2022

Department of Psychology, University of Milano-Bicocca, Milan, Italy; Bicocca center for Applied Psychology, University of Milano Bicocca, Milan, Italy.

Background: The mechanisms of disparities in maternal and perinatal health between migrant and native women are multiple and remain poorly understood. Access to and quality of care are likely to participate in these mechanisms, and one hypothesis is the existence of implicit biases among caregivers through which ethno-racial belonging can influence medical decisions and consequently engender healthcare disparities. Their existence and their role in the generation of non-medically justified differential care have been documented in the United States apart from perinatal care, but remain largely unexplored in Europe.

Primaquine as a Candidate for HHV-8-Associated Primary Effusion Lymphoma and Kaposi's Sarcoma Treatment.

Cancers (Basel)

January 2022

Service de Virologie, Hôpital Pitié Salpêtrière, Institut Pierre Louis d'Epidémiologie et de Santé Publique (iPLESP), INSERM UMR_1136, Sorbonne Université, 75013 Paris, France.

Human Herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is associated with three main severe orphan malignancies, Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD), and primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), which present few therapeutic options. We identified the antimalarial primaquine diphosphate (PQ) as a promising therapeutic candidate for HHV-8-associated PEL and KS. Indeed, PQ strongly reduced cell viability through caspase-dependent apoptosis, specifically in HHV-8-infected PEL cells.

Contribution of GATA6 to homeostasis of the human upper pilosebaceous unit and acne pathogenesis.

Nat Commun

October 2020

Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, King's College London, Floor 28, Tower Wing, Guy's Hospital, Great Maze Pond, London, SE1 9RT, UK.

Although acne is the most common human inflammatory skin disease, its pathogenic mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here we show that GATA6, which is expressed in the upper pilosebaceous unit of normal human skin, is down-regulated in acne. GATA6 controls keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation to prevent hyperkeratinisation of the infundibulum, which is the primary pathological event in acne.
