Abnormal eye movements occur early in the course of disease in many ataxias. However, clinical assessments of oculomotor function lack precision, limiting sensitivity for measuring progression and the ability to detect subtle early signs. Quantitative assessment of eye movements during everyday behaviors such as reading has potential to overcome these limitations and produce functionally relevant measures.

Modelling the human Coenzyme Q deficiency in Drosophila melanogaster.

Free Radic Biol Med

January 2025

Centro Andaluz de Biología del Desarrollo, Universidad Pablo de Olavide-CSIC-JA, Sevilla, Spain; CIBERER, U729, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

The interference of the expression of each of the genes involved in the synthesis of coenzyme Q (CoQ) in Drosophila melanogaster can help to understand the pathophysiology of CoQ-dependent mitochondrial diseases in humans. We have knocked-down all genes involved in the CoQ biosynthesis pathway at different temperatures to induce depletion of CoQ at different levels throughout the body and in a tissue-specific manner. The efficiency of the knockdowns was quantified by Q-RTPCR and determination of CoQ levels by HPLC-UV+ECD.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HPV-positive HNSCC) has distinct biological characteristics from HPV-negative HNSCC. Using an AI-based analytical platform on meta cohorts, we profiled expression patterns of viral transcripts and HPV viral genome integration, and classified the tumor microenvironment (TME). Unsupervised clustering analysis revealed five distinct and novel TME subtypes across patients (immune-enriched, highly immune and B-cell enriched, fibrotic, immune-desert, and immune-enriched luminal).

January 2025

Council for Agricultural Research and Economics, Research Centre for Engineering and Agro-Food Processing, Via della Pascolare 16, 00015 Monterotondo, Italy.

Beekeeping is a crucial agricultural practice that significantly enhances environmental health and food production through effective pollination by honey bees. However, honey bees face numerous threats, including exotic parasites, large-scale transportation, and common agricultural practices that may increase the risk of parasite and pathogen transmission. A major threat is the mite, which feeds on honey bee fat bodies and transmits viruses, leading to significant colony losses.

Rhabdoid tumours (RT) are an aggressive malignancy affecting <2-year-old infants, characterised by biallelic loss-of-function alterations in SWI/SNF-related BAF chromatin remodelling complex subunit B1 (SMARCB1) in nearly all cases. Germline SMARCB1 alterations are found in ~30% of patients and define the RT Predisposition Syndrome type 1 (RTPS1). Uveal melanoma (UVM), the most common primary intraocular cancer in adults, does not harbour SMARCB1 alterations.

Corrected Axial Length and Choroidal Thickness: A Correlation Analysis for Scientific Purposes.

J Pers Med

January 2025

Eye Unit-Department of Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry "Scuola Medica Salernitana", University of Salerno, via S. Allende, 84081 Baronissi, Italy.

Choroidal thickness (ChT) is an important measurement for evaluating eye and systemic disorders, but it is influenced by numerous elements, especially axial length (AL). It is known that the presence of a linear relationship between ChT and AL exists, but recently it has been shown that the AL measurement obtained with the current optical biometry is not very precise and needs to be corrected. This study aimed to verify if a similar correlation also persists with this corrected AL (ALc).
