Introduction: Midwives provide antenatal care to women to ensure the health of both mother and baby, according to women's needs. This study aims to investigate demographic and social, clinical and obstetrical factors that may be associated with unplanned visits to the emergency by nulliparous and multiparous women who received midwifery care during the antenatal period.
Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study with data collection from medical records of the CHU Saint-Pierre hospital.

Background: All European countries have national immunization programs (NIPs) to protect gainst infectious diseases. We aimed to estimate the individual lifetime cost of vaccination in 23 European countries, assuming full compliance with NIP schedules.
Research Design And Methods: We used publicly available data to estimate the individual lifetime cost of vaccination with the vaccines that are currently recommended and funded in each country for healthy individuals and for individuals with underlying medical conditions.

This manuscript summarizes current primary resistance of Helicobacter pylori to antibiotics in Brussels in 2021. Resistance rates were estimated at 18% for clarithromycin, 24% for levofloxacin, 52% for metronidazole, and 0% for amoxicillin and tetracycline. When compared to 2016, resistance rates remain stable, except an increase of 30% for metronidazole.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Human metapneumovirus (hMPV), members of Pneumoviridae family are common causes of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) among children. Study material includes routine nasopharyngeal samples obtained during 8-year period for hMPV and one single season for RSV in children hospitalized for ARTI between 0 and 15 years at the Center Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Saint Pierre in Brussels. Positive samples for RSV or hMPV identified by viral culture, lateral flow chromatography test for RSV or direct fluorescent assay for hMPV were selected retrospectively.

Introduction: Procalcitonin is a marker for bacterial diseases and has been used to guide antibiotic prescription. Procalcitonin accuracy, measured at admission, in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), is unknown in the current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic.
Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of procalcitonin to assess the need for antibiotic treatment in patients with CAP presenting to the emergency department during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Background: Central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are a preventable cause of morbidity among patients in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
Aims: To assess compliance with international guidelines for prevention of CLABSIs in Belgian NICUs, and to study unit characteristics contributing to CLABSIs.
Methods: A survey was undertaken to measure the adherence of various NICUs to the CLABSI prevention guidelines related to catheter insertion, catheter maintenance and quality control measurements.

Context: Interpretation of thyroid function tests during pregnancy is limited by the generalizability of reference intervals between cohorts due to inconsistent methodology.
Objective: (1) To provide an overview of published reference intervals for thyrotropin (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) in pregnancy, (2) to assess the consequences of common methodological between-study differences by combining raw data from different cohorts.
Methods: (1) Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched until December 12, 2021.
Cardiac sonographers often perceive premature beats as a limiting factor during echocardiography because they alter filling and contractility, and loops recorded during or after a premature contraction are often discarded. Here we present 2 cases in which the incidental occurrence of premature beats on Doppler echocardiography contributed to the diagnosis. ().

Optimal detection of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI) remains a challenge, although it is essential to reach the goal of TB elimination. Our objective was to develop and clinically evaluate a user-friendly, 24-h, whole-blood (WB) interferon gamma (IFN-γ) release assay (IGRA) improving the detection of LTBI, compared to available tests. One milliliter of blood was divided into four aliquots and stimulated for 24 h with two different stage-specific mycobacterial antigens, i.

Recent advances in ocular gene and cellular therapy rely on precisely controlled subretinal delivery. Due to its inherent limitations, manual delivery can lead to iatrogenic damage to the retina, the retinal pigment epithelium, favor reflux into the vitreous cavity. In addition, it suffers from lack of standardization, variability in delivery and the need to maintain proficiency.

Active tuberculosis (aTB) remains a major killer from infectious disease, partially due to delayed diagnosis and hence treatment. Classical microbiological methods are slow and lack sensitivity, molecular techniques are costly and often unavailable. Moreover, available immuno-diagnostic tests lack sensitivity and do not differentiate between aTB and latent TB infection (LTBI).

Objectives: The lack of validated instruments assessing vaccine hesitancy/confidence among health care professionals (HCPs) for themselves, and their patients led us to develop and validate the Pro-VC-Be instrument to measure vaccine confidence and other psychosocial determinants of HCPs' vaccination behavior among diverse HCPs in different countries.
Methods: Cross-sectional survey in October-November 2020 among 1,249 GPs in France, 432 GPs in French-speaking parts of Belgium, and 1,055 nurses in Quebec (Canada), all participating in general population immunization. Objective: Pregnant women with autoimmune (subclinical) hypothyroidism have an increased risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, this association remains controversial in euthyroid women with thyroid autoimmunity (TAI). Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the association between TAI and GDM in euthyroid women in a logistic regression analysis with adjustments for baseline/demographic parameters.

Early evidence during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic indicated high levels of interleukin (IL)-6 in patients with severe COVID-19. This led to the off-label use of tocilizumab (TCZ) during the first wave of the pandemic. While the monoclonal antibody blocks IL-6 pathway, its effect on other inflammatory cytokines remains poorly described.
