This manuscript summarizes current primary resistance of Helicobacter pylori to antibiotics in Brussels in 2021. Resistance rates were estimated at 18% for clarithromycin, 24% for levofloxacin, 52% for metronidazole, and 0% for amoxicillin and tetracycline. When compared to 2016, resistance rates remain stable, except an increase of 30% for metronidazole.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study reports six new biallelic loss-of-function variations in PIEZO1, found through exome sequencing in affected fetuses and a deceased neonate from four families.
  • * Most NIHF cases are identify during the second trimester, while post-mortem examinations reveal signs like ascites and pleural effusions that help in diagnosing the underlying cause.

Article Synopsis
  • The NEAT022 trial explored the effects of switching from protease inhibitors to dolutegravir in HIV patients with high cardiovascular risk, revealing that both immediate (DTG-I) and delayed (DTG-D) switches resulted in similar viral suppression and reduced cardiovascular risks.
  • A post hoc analysis focused on weight and body mass index (BMI) changes over 48 and 96 weeks, finding that participants experienced significant weight increases in the first 48 weeks, but weight stabilized afterwards.
  • The modest weight gain was primarily seen in those who were normal-weight or underweight before the switch, with no adverse effects on metabolic health observed during the study period.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Human metapneumovirus (hMPV), members of Pneumoviridae family are common causes of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) among children. Study material includes routine nasopharyngeal samples obtained during 8-year period for hMPV and one single season for RSV in children hospitalized for ARTI between 0 and 15 years at the Center Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) Saint Pierre in Brussels. Positive samples for RSV or hMPV identified by viral culture, lateral flow chromatography test for RSV or direct fluorescent assay for hMPV were selected retrospectively.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Procalcitonin upon Emergency Department Admission during SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

Antibiotics (Basel)

August 2022

Emergency Department, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Saint-Pierre, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Rue Haute 322, 1000 Brussels, Belgium.

Introduction: Procalcitonin is a marker for bacterial diseases and has been used to guide antibiotic prescription. Procalcitonin accuracy, measured at admission, in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), is unknown in the current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic.

Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of procalcitonin to assess the need for antibiotic treatment in patients with CAP presenting to the emergency department during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Background: Central-line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are a preventable cause of morbidity among patients in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).

Aims: To assess compliance with international guidelines for prevention of CLABSIs in Belgian NICUs, and to study unit characteristics contributing to CLABSIs.

Methods: A survey was undertaken to measure the adherence of various NICUs to the CLABSI prevention guidelines related to catheter insertion, catheter maintenance and quality control measurements.

Context: Interpretation of thyroid function tests during pregnancy is limited by the generalizability of reference intervals between cohorts due to inconsistent methodology.

Objective: (1) To provide an overview of published reference intervals for thyrotropin (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) in pregnancy, (2) to assess the consequences of common methodological between-study differences by combining raw data from different cohorts.

Methods: (1) Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched until December 12, 2021.

Cardiac sonographers often perceive premature beats as a limiting factor during echocardiography because they alter filling and contractility, and loops recorded during or after a premature contraction are often discarded. Here we present 2 cases in which the incidental occurrence of premature beats on Doppler echocardiography contributed to the diagnosis. ().

Optimal detection of latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI) remains a challenge, although it is essential to reach the goal of TB elimination. Our objective was to develop and clinically evaluate a user-friendly, 24-h, whole-blood (WB) interferon gamma (IFN-γ) release assay (IGRA) improving the detection of LTBI, compared to available tests. One milliliter of blood was divided into four aliquots and stimulated for 24 h with two different stage-specific mycobacterial antigens, i.

Recent advances in ocular gene and cellular therapy rely on precisely controlled subretinal delivery. Due to its inherent limitations, manual delivery can lead to iatrogenic damage to the retina, the retinal pigment epithelium, favor reflux into the vitreous cavity. In addition, it suffers from lack of standardization, variability in delivery and the need to maintain proficiency.

Active tuberculosis (aTB) remains a major killer from infectious disease, partially due to delayed diagnosis and hence treatment. Classical microbiological methods are slow and lack sensitivity, molecular techniques are costly and often unavailable. Moreover, available immuno-diagnostic tests lack sensitivity and do not differentiate between aTB and latent TB infection (LTBI).

Objectives: The lack of validated instruments assessing vaccine hesitancy/confidence among health care professionals (HCPs) for themselves, and their patients led us to develop and validate the Pro-VC-Be instrument to measure vaccine confidence and other psychosocial determinants of HCPs' vaccination behavior among diverse HCPs in different countries.

Methods: Cross-sectional survey in October-November 2020 among 1,249 GPs in France, 432 GPs in French-speaking parts of Belgium, and 1,055 nurses in Quebec (Canada), all participating in general population immunization. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses evaluated the instrument's construct validity.

Objective: Pregnant women with autoimmune (subclinical) hypothyroidism have an increased risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, this association remains controversial in euthyroid women with thyroid autoimmunity (TAI). Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the association between TAI and GDM in euthyroid women in a logistic regression analysis with adjustments for baseline/demographic parameters.

Early evidence during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic indicated high levels of interleukin (IL)-6 in patients with severe COVID-19. This led to the off-label use of tocilizumab (TCZ) during the first wave of the pandemic. While the monoclonal antibody blocks IL-6 pathway, its effect on other inflammatory cytokines remains poorly described.
