Article Synopsis
  • A study in La Reunion examined women's preferences for vaginal sampling (VS) for HPV testing as part of cervical cancer (CC) screening, focusing on women aged 30 to 65 who were concerned about their screening status.
  • A total of 202 women participated, with results showing that many preferred to collect the sampling kit from a healthcare provider but also favored self-sampling (SS) at home, with clear instructions provided in French and visual aids.
  • The findings indicated no significant difference in preferences between women who were up to date on screenings versus those who were not, suggesting a potential need for further research on the implementation of self-sampling for a broader population.

In preterm infants, early nutrient intake during the first week of life often depends on parenteral nutrition. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of standardized parenteral nutrition using three-in-one double-chamber solutions (3-in-1 STD-PN) on early neonatal growth in a cohort of moderately preterm (MP) infants. This population-based, observational cohort study included preterm infants admitted to neonatal centers in the southeast regional perinatal network in France.

Multiomic analysis of malignant pleural mesothelioma identifies molecular axes and specialized tumor profiles driving intertumor heterogeneity.

Nat Genet

April 2023

Rare Cancers Genomics Team, Genomic Epidemiology Branch, International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization, Lyon, France.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer with rising incidence and challenging clinical management. Through a large series of whole-genome sequencing data, integrated with transcriptomic and epigenomic data using multiomics factor analysis, we demonstrate that the current World Health Organization classification only accounts for up to 10% of interpatient molecular differences. Instead, the MESOMICS project paves the way for a morphomolecular classification of MPM based on four dimensions: ploidy, tumor cell morphology, adaptive immune response and CpG island methylator profile.

Mechanisms of chronic alcohol exposure-induced aggressiveness in cellular model of HCC and recovery after alcohol withdrawal.

Cell Mol Life Sci

June 2022

Groupe de Recherche Sur L'Alcool et Les Pharmacodépendances INSERM UMR1247, Centre Universitaire de Recherche en Santé CURS, Université de Picardie Jules Verne, Avenue Laennec, 80051, Amiens, France.

Alcohol-related liver disease is the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide, accounting for 30% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases and HCC-specific deaths. However, the knowledge on mechanisms by which alcohol consumption leads to cancer progression and its aggressiveness is limited. Better understanding of the clinical features and the mechanisms of alcohol-induced HCC are of critical importance for prevention and the development of novel treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) against COVID-19, implemented in March 2020, resulted in a significant reduction in hospitalized community-acquired pneumonia (hCAP) cases in children in France.
  • A detailed analysis of 2,972 hCAP cases revealed a 63% drop in monthly cases after NPIs began, with a notable increase in the median age of affected children.
  • The study also found that fewer children had high inflammatory markers and there was a trend towards a decrease in pleural effusion cases during the NPI period, suggesting changes in the pathogens causing hCAP.

Article Synopsis
  • Blood cultures in children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) often yield negative results, prompting the study of various biomarkers to predict the presence of bacteremia.
  • A study of 13,752 children found that while blood culture was positive in only 3.6% of cases, levels of absolute neutrophils count (ANC), C-reactive protein (CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT) were significantly higher in those with bacteremia.
  • Of the biomarkers tested, PCT was the most reliable for predicting bacteremia, outperforming white blood cell counts, and CRP stood out as the best routinely available biomarker for this condition.

Background: This study aimed to identify a subgroup of recipients at low risk of haemorrhage, bile leakage and ascites following liver transplantation (LT).

Methods: Factors associated with significant postoperative ascites (more than 10 ml/kg on postoperative day 5), bile leakage and haemorrhage after LT were identified using three separate multivariable analyses in patients who had LT in 2010-2019. A model predicting the absence of all three outcomes was created and validated internally using bootstrap procedure.

Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis of the testis (MTVM) is a rare tumor encountering for less than 1% of mesothelioma. Patients suffering from these tumors have poor survival due to local and distant metastasis despite treatment. Actually, no specific treatment recommendations exist for this tumor, yet radical orchidectomy is the gold standard in limited disease.
