Affordable Custom Three-Dimensional Anatomy Atlases.

Proc IEEE Glob Humanit Technol Conf

October 2019

Research Institute in Biomedical and Health Science, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas de G. C., Spain.

In this paper, we present methodology and tools for creating custom three-dimensional anatomical atlases for medical education based on web technologies and open-source software. Traditional medical anatomy education has relied on printed anatomical atlases, in-person lectures, and anatomical dissection. This traditional approach underserves populations in need due to high cost, lack of availability of materials, and a limited of trained educators.

Background: Food insecurity can contribute to poor adherence to both tuberculosis treatment and HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART). Interventions that target food insecurity have the potential to increase treatment adherence, improve clinical outcomes, and decrease mortality. The goals of this study were to compare the feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of implementing two different forms of nutrition support for HIV-TB co-infected adults in the Casamance region of Senegal.

Abdominal tuberculosis accounts for 3 to 5% of all visceral diseases. Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of anti-tuberculosis treatments, some cases of exacerbation of the initial clinical presentation have been described during the initiation of treatment. However, these reactions also known as "paradoxical" have been rarely reported in immunocompetent patients and much less in the case of bowel obstruction.

Background: There is an urgent need for safe and effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) for human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) infection. We undertook the first clinical trial of a single-tablet regimen containing elvitegravir, cobicistat, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (E/C/F/TDF) to assess its effectiveness in HIV-2-infected individuals in Senegal, West Africa.

Methods: HIV-2-infected, ART-naive adults with World Health Organization stage 3-4 disease or CD4 count <750 cells/μL were eligible for this 48-week, open-label trial.

Late diagnosis of HIV infection can be fatal because it favors the appearance of opportunistic infections whose management requires the use of several molecules which can cause drug interactions. We report the case of a 45-year old female patient under heroin substitution treatment, using methadone and with HIV1 under antiretroviral treatment. This patient had nonspecific pulmonary appearance associated with dry nagging cough and progressive dyspnea evolving in a feverish context.

Shared psychotic disorder is a rare entity characterized by the transmission of delusional symptoms from one patient ("inducer") to another ("induced" partner). We here report a clinical observation of atypical shared psychotic disorder involving delusion of persecution and of grandeur in a teenager induced by two subjects (grand-father and paternal uncle) with two different types of psychiatric disorders, all of which present in the same subject (third-party). The nature of the content transmitted to the third subject was the sum of the ideas of the first two subjects.

Background: Food insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa and malnutrition constitute the main obstacles for successful treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH). The aim of this study was to assess the effect of consuming daily 100 g RUTF (ready-to-use therapeutic food) as supplement, on body composition, anemia and zinc status of hospitalized PLWH in Senegal.

Methods: A Controlled clinical trial was conducted in 65 PLWH randomly allocated to receive either standard hospital diet alone (Control group: n = 33), or the standard diet supplemented with 100 g RUTF/day (RUTF group: n = 32).

Service de Chirurgie Thoracique et Cardiovasculaire, Centre Hospitalier National Universitaire de Fann, Dakar, Senegal.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVM) have a wide range of clinical presentations. Operative bleeding is one of the most hazardous complications in the surgical management of high-flow vascular malformations. In the cervical region, the presence of vital vascular structures, such as the carotid artery and jugular vein, may increase this risk.

Epidemiology and genetic characterization of measles strains in Senegal, 2004-2013.

PLoS One

March 2016

Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Unité de Virologie Médicale, Dakar, Sénégal.

Background: In Senegal, with the variable routine vaccination coverage, the risk for illness and death from measles still exists as evidenced by the measles epidemic episode in 2009. Since 2002 a laboratory-based surveillance system of measles was established by the Ministry of Health and the Institut Pasteur de Dakar. The present study analysed the data collected over the 10 years inclusive between 2004-2013 in order to define a measles epidemiological profile in Senegal, and we carried out a phylogenetic analysis of measles virus circulating in Senegal over the period 2009-2012.
