Objectives: The therapeutic arsenal for MRSA infections is limited. The aim of this study was to assess the non-inferiority of a combination of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole plus rifampicin versus linezolid alone for the treatment of MRSA infection.
Methods: We conducted a randomized, open-label, single-centre, non-inferiority trial comparing trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (160 mg/800 mg three times daily) plus rifampicin (600 mg once a day) versus linezolid (600 mg twice a day) alone in adult patients with various types of MRSA infection.

Recent studies demonstrate that early molecular response to tyrosine-kinase inhibitors is strongly predictive of outcome in chronic myeloid leukemia patients and that early response landmarks may identify patients at higher risk for transformation who would benefit from an early switch to second-line therapy. In this study, we evaluated the ability of the control gene GUS to identify relevant thresholds for known therapeutic decision levels (BCR-ABL1/ABL1IS = 10% and 0.1%).

Background: Although primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) is the preferred reperfusion method for ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction, it remains difficult to implement in many areas, and fibrinolytic therapy is still widely used.
Methods And Results: We assessed 5-year mortality in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction from the French Registry of Acute ST-Elevation or Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (FAST-MI) 2005 according to use and type of reperfusion therapy. Of 1492 patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction with a first call ≤12 hours from onset, 447 (30%) received fibrinolysis (66% prehospital; 97% with subsequent angiography, 84% with subsequent PCI), 583 (39%) had pPCI, and 462 (31%) received no reperfusion.

Background: recurrent falls are a major public health problem associated with high morbidity and mortality as well as increased dependence. Multifactorial intervention has been shown to reduce recurrence by 20% (Profet study). The French Health Authority (Haute autorité de santé or HAS) recommends since 2009 a systematic screening for and assessment of risk factors as well as the implementation of preventive measures.

Imatinib is the treatment of choice for FIP1L1/PDGFRA (F/P)-associated chronic eosinophilic leukemia (F/P CEL), but its optimal dosing, duration, and possibility of discontinuation are still a matter of debate. A retrospective multicenter study was conducted with 44 F/P CEL patients identified in the French Eosinophil Network and treated with imatinib. The most frequently involved systems were skin (57%), spleen (52%), and lung (45%), and eosinophilic heart disease was observed in 15 patients (34%).

Major challenge in paediatric palliative home care is to anticipate management of future events. In our opinion, one of major approach is to avoid medical futility especially resuscitation attempts in terminally-ill children especially if home care will be organized. We therefore prospectively discussed with proxi what should be attempted (e.

A 32-year-old pregnant woman presented with cluster headache (CH) during the third trimester of a normal pregnancy. Pure oxygen mask inhalation was ineffective, and intranasal lidocaine applications were realized associated with oral methylprednisolone, given at 1 mg per kg once daily. These treatments rendered the pain tolerable and the pregnancy went to its term with no consequence on the baby.

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is a genetic skin disease of which the recessive subtype also named Hallopeau-Siemens is the most severe. It is due to lack of expression of type VII collagen which is essential for dermal anchoring. Severe obstructive uropathies of the urethral and bladder area may occur during the first years of life, in relation to local bullous activity.

Although surgical repair is considered the standard treatment for intraarticular distal humeral fractures, most investigators have assessed its results using dual-plate fixation in 2 planes. The purpose of this study was to determine the functional outcome of open reduction and internal fixation of these complex fractures using Y-shaped reconstruction plates. We identified 17 patients who had operative treatment for Arbeitsgemeinschaft Für Osteosynthesefragen (AO) type 1, 3-C fractures using a Y-shaped Lambda plate (Zimmer, Warsaw, IN).

Resistance is one of failure's reasons. We tried, through clinical experience, to approach the magnitude and nature of the links, between phenotypically defined acquired resistance and clinical failure, in community acquired respiratory infections. An efficient resistance mecanism, able to suppress antibiotic action, is clearely associated to a risk of clinical failure (e.

Genital herpes, usually a benign infection, has nevertheless an important psychological impact by its recurrent character. The clinical management needs first a well done patient counseling, and second, the biological documentation of the virus excretion. When this is achieved, different treatment strategies may be proposed aiming mainly acute crisis.

Introduction: Non AIDS-defining cancer would have increased in HIV-patients as suggested by numerous studies. Four cases of adenocarcinoma of unknown primary site with thoracic localization that occurred in HIV-infected patients are described.
Exegesis: To date, there have been no published data about carcinomas of unknown primary site relating to HIV-infected patients; however, immunodepression could promote them.

Chlamydia pneumoniae is a newly described and ubiquitous bacterium. Most infections are asymptomatic as shown by a high worldwide seroprevalence (> 50% of cases). It is a common cause of acute respiratory infections, mainly pneumonia (> 50% of cases) and other acute respiratory tract infections (25% of acute bronchitis, < 5% of sinusitis, otitis and pharyngitis).

The technique of closed intramedullary nailing has inherent operative difficulties and complications, which are especially evident and costly to the surgeon just beginning to become familiarized with the procedure. Practical advice about the techniques of closed femoral and tibial nailing to improve awareness of the possible problems is provided. The nailing procedure is analyzed in a step-by-step fashion from pre-operative planning to locking.

Health centres of Idjwi district (Zaire) have been self-financed through the selling of drugs since 1985. Medical care is expensive and its use is low (24 visits per year per 100 inhabitants).
