Elderly patients (over age 85) are increasingly treated in Intensive Care Units (ICU), despite doctors' reluctance to accept these frail patients. There are only few studies describing the relevance of treatments for this group of patients in ICU. One of these studies defined an age of 85 or over as the essential admittance criterion.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) causes high mortality. Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) have potentially relevant immune-modulatory properties, whose place in ARDS treatment is not established. This phase 2b trial was undertaken to assess the efficacy of UC-MSCs in patients with SARS-CoV-2-induced ARDS.

Background: The characteristics and outcomes of adult patients with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection who require ICU admission are poorly defined. Although several studies in adults with RSV infection have been published in recent years, they did not focus specifically on patients with critical illness.
Research Question: What are the characteristics and outcomes of adult patients in the ICU with RSV infection and how do they compare with those of patients in the ICU with influenza infection?
Study Design And Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study in France and Belgium (17 sites) compared the characteristics and outcomes of adult patients in the ICU with RSV infection vs those with influenza infection between November 2011 and April 2018.

Background: During isotretinoin treatment, special attention is required to detect any symptom or change in the mental health of patients. The monitoring is complex for adolescents because of confounding factors such as mood changes associated with adolescence and puberty and the higher psychosocial impairment due to the acne itself.
Aim: To determine the utility of the Adolescent Depression Rating Scale (ADRS) for monitoring symptoms in adolescents before and during isotretinoin treatment in dermatology real-life practice.

Background: Initial reports have described the poor outcome of unexpected cardiac arrest (CA) in intensive care unit (ICU) among COVID-19 patients in China and the USA. However, there are scarce data on characteristics and outcomes of such CA patients in Europe.
Methods: Prospective registry in 35 French ICUs, including all in-ICU CA in COVID-19 adult patients with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) attempt.

Background: is endowed with a repertoire of virulence factors potentially implicated in its pathogenicity and ability to cause invasive disease. The main objective of this study was to describe the bacterial genotype, including virulence genes and affiliation to clonal complexes (CCs), encountered in severe pneumonia.
Methods: DNA microarray was used to analyse 18 isolates from patients hospitalized with severe pneumonia between 2017 and 2019.

The pulmonary vascular endothelialitis together with the high rate of distal pulmonary embolism or thrombosis extensively reported in critically ill coronavirus disease 2019 patients may impair antibiotic diffusion in the lung parenchyma of coronavirus disease 2019 patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia leading to insufficient antibiotic concentration, thus promoting lung abscess formation. We report that 17 of 119 coronavirus disease 2019 patients (14%) with ventilator-associated pneumonia developed a lung abscess. Proportion of patients receiving corticosteroids did not differ between patients with and without lung abscess.

Background: Studies describing the clinical features and short-term prognosis of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for menstrual toxic shock syndrome (m-TSS) are lacking.
Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study of patients with a clinical diagnosis of m-TSS admitted between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2020 in 43 French pediatric (n = 7) or adult (n = 36) ICUs. The aim of the study was to describe the clinical features and short-term prognosis, as well as to assess the 2011 Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) diagnostic criteria, in critically ill patients with m-TSS.

Background: To evaluate the contribution of large-cube 30° × 25° optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the characterization of diabetic macular edema (DME) by assessing its extent and the presence of additional retinal edemas and to evaluate the factors that influenced their occurrence.
Methods: This retrospective study enrolled patients with diabetes who presented with retinal edema detected by horizontal large-cube 30° × 25° (8.7 × 7.

Over several decades, the economic situation and consideration of patient quality of life have been responsible for increased outpatient treatment. It is in this context that outpatient antimicrobial treatment (OPAT) has rapidly developed. The availability of elastomeric infusion pumps has permitted prolonged or continuous antibiotic administration by dint of a mechanical device necessitating neither gravity nor a source of electricity.

Background The association of pulmonary embolism (PE) with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains unclear, and the diagnostic accuracy of D-dimer tests for PE is unknown. Purpose To conduct meta-analysis of the study-level incidence of PE and DVT and to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of D-dimer tests for PE from multicenter individual patient data. Materials and Methods A systematic literature search identified studies evaluating the incidence of PE or DVT in patients with COVID-19 from January 1, 2020, to June 15, 2020.

Background: The decision-making on antiplatelet drug withdrawal or continuation before performing a pleural procedure is based on the balance between the risk of bleeding associated with the antiplatelet therapy and the risk of arterial thrombosis due to its interruption. Knowledge on antiplatelet therapy-associated risk of bleeding after pleural procedures is lacking.
Research Question: Is the risk of bleeding associated with antiplatelet drugs increased in patients undergoing pleural procedures?
Study Design And Methods: We conducted a French multicenter cohort study in 19 centers.

Introduction: In intensive care unit (ICU), the decision of extubation is a critical time because mortality is particularly high in case of reintubation. To reduce that risk, guidelines recommend to systematically perform a spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) before extubation in order to mimic the postextubation physiological conditions. SBT is usually performed with a T-piece disconnecting the patient from the ventilator or with low levels of pressure-support ventilation (PSV).
