In France, international adoption includes around to 90,000 children since 1980 and near 300,000 immigrant children were counted in 2008. This population is heterogeneous, according to age and country of origin, and its large number. It is not easy to completely and surely assess the vaccine status of the child.

Comparison of albicans vs. non-albicans candidemia in French intensive care units.

Introduction: Candidemia raises numerous therapeutic issues for intensive care physicians. Epidemiological data that could guide the choice of initial therapy are still required. This analysis sought to compare the characteristics of intensive care unit (ICU) patients with candidemia due to non-albicans Candida species with those of ICU patients with candidemia due to Candida albicans.

[Infection and diabetic foot].

The large number of factors that influence the outcome of patients with diabetic foot infections calls for a multidisciplinary management of such patients. Infection is always the consequence of a preexisting foot wound whose chronicity is facilitated by the diabetic peripheral neuropathy, whereas peripheral vascular disease is a factor of poor outcome, especially regarding the risk for leg amputation. Primary and secondary prevention of IPD depends both on the efficacy of wound off-loading.

[CCR5 antagonists: a new class of antiretrovirals].

Inhibition of CCR5 co-receptor which is also a chemokine receptor, is a new way for inhibition of HIV-1 replication. Small antagonist molecules exert non competitive inhibition of the HIV co-receptor CCR5, which is essential for HIV entry. The CCR5 antagonists aplaviroc (GlaxoSmithKine), vicriviroc (Schering-Plough), and maraviroc (Pfizer) have reached phases III of clinical development.

[Contribution of ultrasonography to the diagnosis of non-hormonal acquired clitoromegalia: a case report].

We report the case of a 30-year-old woman, consulting for a painful clitoromegaly which developed progressively and rapidly. The gyneco-endocrinological assessment ruled out hyperandrogenism. Ultrasound examination of the clitoris revealed the presence of a clitoral cyst.

[Fluoroquinolones in respiratory infections].

Given orally, currently marketed fluoroquinolones, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and pefloxacin are absorbed rapidly, have an excellent diffusion coefficient. They are wide-spectrum first intention antibiotics effective against Gram negative bacilli, staphylococci and intracellular germs such as Legionella, Chlamydiae and mycoplasms. The spectrum does however not include streptococci, and in particular pneumococci, and anaerobic germs.

A non-comparative, multicentre study of cefepime in the treatment of serious bacterial infections.

Multi-resistant strains of Gram-negative bacteria are rapidly emerging as a frequent cause of serious bacterial infection in the hospital environment. Effective treatment must include an antibiotic with activity against these organisms. In an open multicentre study, cefepime was evaluated as empirical therapy in 156 hospitalized patients (mean age 57 years) with serious infection of the urinary tract (n = 43), lower respiratory tract (n = 101) and skin and soft tissue (n = 12).
