Impact of adolescents' binge drinking on blood chemistry.

Eur J Pediatr

December 2024

Pediatric Unit, Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Via Della Commenda 9, 20122, Milan, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the effects of binge drinking on adolescent blood chemistry, focusing on glucose, sodium, calcium, potassium, and acid-base balance, by analyzing medical records from 173 teenagers treated at a Milan hospital between 2013 and 2023.
  • - Results showed that while glucose, sodium, and calcium levels were generally stable, there were significant cases of hypokalemia and an overwhelming presence of acute respiratory acidosis among binge drinkers.
  • - The findings indicate that binge drinking in adolescents leads to notable disturbances in acid-base balance and potassium levels, but has little impact on glucose, sodium, and calcium levels.

Neurology Department University Hospital of Toulouse, Clinical Investigation Center CIC 1436, Parkinson Expert Centre, NeuroToul Center of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (COEN) of Toulouse, CHU of Toulouse, Inserm, University of Toulouse 3, Toulouse, France.

Background: Spinocerebellar ataxia 27B is the most common genetic late onset cerebellar ataxia (LOCA). However, it commonly overlaps with other genetic LOCA as with the cerebellar form of multiple system atrophy (MSA-C).

Objectives: To pinpoint which clinical signs and symptoms best discriminate between FGF14 + from FGF14 - patients at symptoms' onset.

Background: Despite advances in radiation techniques, radiation cystitis (RC) remains a significant cause of morbidity from pelvic radiotherapy, which may affect patients' quality of life (QoL). The pathophysiology of RC is not well understood, which limits the development of effective treatments.

Objective: The Radiotoxicity Bladder Biomarkers study aims to investigate the correlation between blood and urinary biomarkers and the intensity of acute RC symptoms and QoL in patients undergoing localized prostate cancer radiotherapy.

Perineal hernias occur rarely following abdominoperineal resections. No standardized surgical approach exists for treating PH. We herein present the case of a large, symptomatic PH that was repaired with a combined abdominal and perineal approach, with peritoneal flap reconstruction of the pelvic floor and placement of a biological mesh.

Background: Mycobacterial culture is routinely performed to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) in Canada. Globally, meta-analyses suggest that up to 2% of positive cultures are falsely positive for due to laboratory cross-contamination. Five patients from distinct clinical institutions in Montréal were diagnosed with culture-positive TB as their clinical samples were processed in a centralized mycobacteria laboratory.

Clinical nurse specialists (CNS) are nurses with a Master in Science Nursing degree. CNS key competences include leadership, entrepreneurship and research. Using the Symptom Navi programme as an example, we show the importance of CNSs in developing an innovative project and their leadership role in implementing the programme into practice.

Clinical nurse specialists provide specialized care to individuals with complex health issues, while also supporting healthcare professionals and institutions in delivering evidence-based care. In hospital settings, they work at various levels within the organization: in a ward-based role. in transversal focused on specific issues such as pain management, and in the longitudinal follow-up of patients, ensuring continuity between hospitalization, outpatient care, and home care.

It is recognized that integrating the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) into new care models can positively impact patient outcomes and the healthcare system. The Canton of Vaud is currently in the initial phase of developing this role. The University Hospital of Lausanne currently employs 15 NPs across various clinical departments, and several initiatives to further develop NP roles are in progress.

[Legal framework for nurse practitioners in the Canton of Vaud].

Rev Med Suisse

Institut universitaire de formation et de recherche en soins, Faculté de biologie et de médecine, Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois et Université de Lausanne, 1018 Lausanne.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) have existed internationally for several decades, with scientific literature demonstrating improved access to care, patient safety, and well-being. To address the sociodemographic challenges of public health and the shortage of healthcare professionals, the Canton of Vaud was the first in Switzerland to develop a legal framework that defines the responsibilities and requirements of the NP role in order to integrate them into the healthcare system. The integration of NPs into the hospital setting has shown promising results.

Introduction: The epididymis creates an optimal acidic luminal environment for sperm maturation and storage. In epididymal principal cells (PCs), proton secretion is activated by the accumulation of the sodium-proton exchanger type 3, NHE3 (SLC9A3), in apical stereocilia. PCs also secrete ATP, which is hydrolyzed into adenosine by ectonucleotidases.

Introduction: French medical students can access occupational medicine after passing the residency examination. Few studies have looked at the lack of attractiveness of occupational medicine, contributing to the demographic decline of occupational physicians (OPs). The purpose of this study was to explore the stereotypes of OPs by their colleagues at different levels of formation to understand the determinants of the current lack of attractiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial secondary tricuspid regurgitation (A-STR) is a subtype of secondary tricuspid regurgitation (STR) that is often treated with transcatheter tricuspid valve edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER), showing distinct patient characteristics and treatment outcomes.
  • A study involving 641 patients revealed that 31% had A-STR, which was linked to better heart function, a higher presence of atrial fibrillation, and more effective TR reduction post-procedure compared to nonatrial STR patients.
  • A-STR patients experienced improved survival rates and lower symptomatic burdens after treatment; only 38% remained symptomatic (NYHA class ≥III) after 2 years, compared to 46

Despite the challenges associated with periprocedural imaging, transcatheter tricuspid valve interventions have shown important impact on outcomes. A comprehensive understanding of the anatomy of the right heart and surrounding structures is crucial. One way to optimize these interventions is by identifying the optimal fluoroscopic viewing angles along the S-curve of the tricuspid valve.

Respiratory infections are associated with a huge burden of disease every year, and disproportionately affect older adults, namely those aged 65 years and older. Older adults are at increased risk of infections compared to their younger counterparts, and once infected, have a higher risk of experiencing severe disease course, complications and long-term sequelae. Therefore, vaccination is clearly a key strategy to prevent infection and its attendant negative consequences.

The anatomy and vasculature of the optic nerve head are complex and subject to numerous variations. The main risk factor for glaucomatous optic neuropathy is elevated intraocular pressure, but many other factors have been identified. A vascular component seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis and/or progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, either under the influence of ocular hypertension or as an independent risk factor, particularly as in normal tension glaucoma (NTG).
