Opioid analgesic (OA) addiction occurs frequently among the elderly, and results in high morbidity and mortality due to geriatric pathologies associated with pharmacokinetic modifications. However, patients with this type of addiction are under-identified and specific screening tools should be more widely used to detect the risk factors for OA addiction. Before initiating an opioid prescription, exhaustive research into associated treatments (to track drug interaction) and opioid prescriptions by other clinicians (a phenomenon known as "doctor shopping") is required.

For over a century, research has demonstrated that damage to primary visual cortex does not eliminate all capacity for visual processing in the brain. From Riddoch's (1917) early demonstration of intact motion processing for blind field stimuli, to the iconic work of Weiskrantz et al. (1974) showing reliable spatial localization, it is clear that secondary visual pathways that bypass V1 carry information to the visual brain that in turn influences behavior.

The present research examines whether this pattern reveals a general human tendency to empathise more with the emotions of individuals with low (versus high) power. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is an invalidating chronic condition that can occur after an acute peripheral lesion. Prism adaptation therapy is regarded as a promising tool to improve chronic pain in this syndrome but the mechanisms which lead to pain amelioration remain unknown. Michel Jouvet proposed in 1959 that REM sleep is a paradoxical state since it was characterized by the association of a cortical activation similar to wakefulness (W) with muscle atonia. Recently, we showed using cFos as a marker of activity that cortical activation during paradoxical sleep (PS) was limited to a few limbic cortical structures in contrast to W during which all cortices were strongly activated. However, we were not able to demonstrate whether the same neurons are activated during PS and W and to rule out that the activation observed was not linked with stress induced by the flowerpot method of PS deprivation.

When vision is removed, limb position has been shown to progressively drift during repetitive arm movements. The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is known to be involved in the processing of multisensory information, the formation of internal hand estimate, and online motor control. Background and Purpose: We used differential actigraphy as a novel, objective method to quantify motor neglect (a clinical condition whereby patients mimic hemiplegia even in the absence of sensorimotor deficits), whose diagnosis is at present highly subjective, based on the clinical observation of patients’ spontaneous motor behavior. Methods: Patients wear wristwatch-like accelerometers, which record spontaneous motor activity of their upper limbs during 24 hours. To resolve this age-old honest signalling paradox, researchers must first establish whether deception benefits deceivers. However, while vocal exaggeration is widespread in the animal kingdom and assumably adaptive, its effectiveness in biasing listeners has not been established. Here, we show that human listeners can detect deceptive vocal signals produced by vocalisers who volitionally shift their voice frequencies to exaggerate or attenuate their perceived size.
