As a possible body signal influencing brain dynamics, respiration is fundamental for perception, cognition, and emotion. The olfactory system has recently acquired its credentials by proving to be crucial in the transmission of respiratory influence on the brain via the sensitivity to nasal airflow of its receptor cells. Here, we present recent findings evidencing respiration-related activities in the brain.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a highly prevalent and harmful medical disorder often comorbid with psychosis where it can contribute to cardiovascular complications. Probing consciousness and cognitive abilities in non-communicating patients is one of the most challenging diagnostic issues. A fast growing medical and scientific literature explores the various facets of this challenge, often coined under the generic expression of 'Disorders of Consciousness' (DoC). Crucially, a set of independent converging results demonstrated both (1) the diagnostic and prognostic importance of this expertise, and (2) the need to combine behavioural measures with brain structure and activity data to improve diagnostic and prognostication accuracy as well as potential therapeutic intervention.

The management of delayed cerebral ischemia after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a rare event affecting relatively young patients therefore leading to a high social impact. The management of SAH follows a biphasic course with early brain injuries in the first 72 hours followed by a phase at risk of secondary deterioration due to delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) in 20 to 30% patients. Cerebral infarction from DCI is the most preventable cause of mortality and morbidity after SAH.
