Importance: Breast cancer (BC) diagnosis and treatment expose patients to a 5-fold higher risk of depression compared with the general population, with an estimated prevalence of 10% to 25%. A depressive episode in patients with BC has implications for the tolerance of and adherence to treatment, impairing quality of life and reducing life expectancy.

Objective: To identify and characterize distinct longitudinal patterns of depressive symptoms in patients with BC from diagnosis to 3 years after treatment.

Background: Return to work (RTW) after cancer can be modulated by psychosocial factors, including a reordering of one's life values, with more emphasis on private life than work-life. This change in patients' outlook on work-life is however poorly understood.

Methods: We used data from a French cohort (CANTO, NCT01993498) of women diagnosed with stage I-III primary breast cancer (BC) prospectively assessing life priorities between work and private life at diagnosis and 2 years after diagnosis.

Rectal cancer radiotherapy.

Cancer Radiother

February 2022

Service universitaire de radiothérapie, Institut de cancérologie de Lorraine centre Alexis-Vautrin, 54000 Nancy, France.

We present the updated recommendations of the French society of oncological radiotherapy for rectal cancer radiotherapy. The standard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer consists in chemoradiotherapy followed by radical surgery with total mesorectal resection and adjuvant chemotherapy according to nodal status. Although this strategy efficiently reduced local recurrences rates below 5% in expert centres, functional sequelae could not be avoided resulting in 20 to 30% morbidity rates.

Based on results of clinical trials, completion ALND (cALND) is frequently not performed for patients with breast conservation therapy and one or two involved sentinel nodes (SN) by micro- or macro-metastases. However, there were limitations despite a conclusion of non-inferiority for cALND omission. No trial had included patients with SN macro-metastases and total mastectomy or with >2 SN macro-metastases.

Background: The effectiveness of paravertebral block in preventing chronic pain after breast surgery remains controversial. The primary hypothesis of this study was that paravertebral block reduces the incidence of chronic pain 3 months after breast cancer surgery.

Methods: In this prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled study, 380 women undergoing partial or complete mastectomy with or without lymph node dissection were randomized to receive preoperative paravertebral block with either 0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of combining androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with high-dose salvage radiotherapy in men with oligorecurrent pelvic node relapses of prostate cancer, aiming to extend the period without cancer progression.
  • Conducted as an open-label phase II trial with 67 participants over a median follow-up of about 49 months, the results indicate strong progression-free survival rates of 81% at 2 years and 58% at 3 years, with manageable side effects reported.
  • The findings suggest that this combination treatment can lead to prolonged tumor control and remission in nearly half of the patients after 3 years, indicating a promising approach for managing this challenging cancer recurrence scenario.

Rhabdomyosarcoma.

Pediatr Blood Cancer

May 2021

Department of Radiation Oncology, Stanford University, Stanford, California.

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a heterogeneous disease both in presentation and histology. Improvements in a multimodality therapy resulted in the improved overall survival for patients with a low-risk and intermediate-risk disease but not for patients with a metastatic disease. We reviewed and contrasted the North American and European practice patterns, though ultimately the principles of staging, surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are similar in both Children's Oncology Group and International Society of Paediatric Oncology treatment approaches.

Many trials confirmed the safety of omitting axillary dissection in the selected patients treated for early breast cancer. The external validity of these trials is questionable. Our study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the French population representativity in the SERC trial and the differences between these two populations as well as comparing the French and the Swedish populations (the SENOMIC trial population and the Swedish National Breast Cancer Registry (NKBC) cohort) of patients with sentinel node (SN) micro-metastasis.

Background: In patients treated with cardiotoxic chemotherapies, the presence of cardiovascular risk factors and previous cardiac disease have been strongly correlated to the onset of cardiotoxicity. The influence of overweight and obesity as risk factors in the development of treatment-related cardiotoxicity in breast cancer (BC) was recently suggested. However, due to meta-analysis design, it was not possible to take into account associated cardiac risk factors or other classic risk factors for anthracycline (antineoplastic antibiotic) and trastuzumab (monoclonal antibody) cardiotoxicity.

Pediatric ependymoma carries a dismal prognosis, mainly owing to local relapse within RT fields. The current prospective European approach is to increase the radiation dose with a sequential hypofractionated stereotactic boost. In this study, we assessed the possibility of using a simultaneous integrated boost (SIB), comparing VMAT vs.

Post-radiation sarcomas are rare secondary cancers arising from radiation therapies. To date, few genetic specificities have been described for such malignancies and the oncogenesis of sarcomas with complex genetics (both sporadic and post-radiation) remains largely misunderstood. We performed genomic and transcriptomic analyses on 77 post-radiation sarcomas using DNA-array and RNA sequencing.
