Ultrafiltration versus diuretics for the treatment of fluid overload in patients with heart failure: a hospital cost analysis.

Heart failure (HF) is a common, serious disease in the US and Europe. Patients with HF often require treatment for fluid overload, resulting in costly inpatient visits; however, limited evidence exists on the costs of alternative treatments. This study performed a cost-analysis of ultrafiltration (UF) vs diuretic therapy (DIUR-T) for patients with HF from the hospital perspective.

Schools as Sites for Recruiting Participants and Implementing Research.

Schools can be a valuable resource for recruitment of participants for research involving children, adolescents, and parents. Awareness of the benefits and challenges of working with schools can assist researchers in developing effective school partnerships. This article discusses the advantages of conducting research within the school system as well as the challenges that may also arise.

Mercury, omega-3 fatty acids, and seafood intake are not associated with heart rate variability or QT interval.

Mercury (Hg), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrations differ across seafood types. Our aim was to investigate the association of Hg, EPA, and DHA, as well as avid consumption of diverse seafood types, with cardiovascular variables heart rate variability (HRV) and QT interval duration (QTc) in a contemporary population. We measured HRV and QTc by Holter monitor, EPA and DHA in plasma, total Hg in whole blood, and possible confounders in 94 avid seafood consumers from Long Island, NY.

Does cervical cerclage decrease preterm birth in twin pregnancies with a short cervix?

Purpose: To determine if use of cerclage in twin gestations with mid-trimester short cervix is associated with decreased preterm birth rate.

Study Design: This is a retrospective cohort of twin gestations identified with cervical length of ≤2.5 cm before 24 weeks of gestation through the perinatal ultrasound database of two institutions from 2008 to 2014.

Improving the ultrasound detection of isolated fetal limb abnormalities.

Objective: The prenatal detection rate of isolated fetal limb abnormalities ranges from 4 to 29.5%. Our aim was to determine the accuracy of a detailed ultrasound protocol in detecting isolated fetal limb abnormalities Methods: This is a retrospective study of infants born at our institution with isolated limb defects from 2009 to 2014.
