Background: Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) has been used for decades in different countries to reduce hospitalization rates, with favorable clinical and economic outcomes. This study assesses the cost-utility of OPAT compared to inpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (IPAT) from the perspective of a public university hospital and the Brazilian National Health System (Unified Health System -SUS).

Methods: Prospective study with adult patients undergoing OPAT at an infusion center, compared to IPAT.

Purpose: To compare the rate of remission, rate of response, change in depressive symptoms, and adverse effects between repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective case-control study, 35 patients treated for depression with rTMS (left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, 90% observed motor threshold, 10 Hz, 2000 pulses/session, 15 sessions) at Örebro University Hospital, Sweden (cases), were compared with a matched group of 35 patients treated for depression with ECT (controls). Data on controls were obtained from the Swedish National Quality Register for ECT (Q-ECT).

Article Synopsis
  • A novel drug-free method was developed to target and kill MCF7 breast cancer cells using low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in conjunction with reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based nanocomposites.
  • The fruit extract of Rosa canina was utilized for the first time to create various rGO-based nanocomposites through green synthesis, and their properties were thoroughly evaluated using multiple analytical techniques.
  • The research demonstrated that increasing the laser irradiation dose enhanced cell death, with a maximum of 50% observed at a specific dose, indicating the promising potential of rGO-based nanocomposites in cancer treatment.

Little is known about female sex workers' daily lives or emotional relationships. Using relational-cultural theory, this study explored the relationship dynamics between sex workers and their intimate partners in Kumasi, Ghana. We collected qualitative data from 37 male intimate partners through 24 in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions (FGDs) with 13 male partners.

The RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine (Mosquirix) reduces the incidence of Plasmodium falciparum malaria and is intended for routine administration to infants in Sub-Saharan Africa. We evaluated the immunogenicity and safety of 10-valent pneumococcal non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae protein D conjugate vaccine (PHiD-CV; Synflorix) and human rotavirus vaccine (HRV; Rotarix) when co-administered with RTS,S/AS01 ( www.clinicaltrials.

Oligomeric and fibrillar amyloid beta 42 induce platelet aggregation partially through GPVI.

Platelets

June 2018

e Faculty of Health Sciences , Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute, Curtin University, Perth , Australia.

The effects of the Alzheimer's disease (AD)-associated Amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides on platelet aggregation have been previously assessed, but most of these studies focused on Aβ40 species. It also remains to be determined which distinct forms of Aβ peptides exert differential effects on platelets. In AD, oligomeric Aβ42 species is widely thought to be a major contributor to the disease pathogenesis.

1. Despite speculation that the CYP2C19 gene may contain CpG islands, there has been little direct assessment of the role for epigenetics in the regulation of this pharmacogene. The effect of 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5azaDC), a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor, and trichostatin A (TSA), an inhibitor of histone deacetylases, on the expression of CYP2C19 and five of its known transcription factors (TF) has been assessed in cell lines derived from neoplastic liver and intestine.

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) consists of providing antimicrobial therapy by parenteral infusion without hospitalization. A systematic review was performed to compare OPAT and hospitalization as health care modalities from an economic perspective. Areas covered: We identified 1455 articles using 13 electronic databases and manual searches.

Stem cell "mechanomics" refers to the effect of mechanical cues on stem cell and matrix biology, where cell shape and fate are intrinsic manifestations of form and function. Before specialization, the stem cell itself serves as a sensor and actuator; its structure emerges from its local mechanical milieu as the cell adapts over time. Coupling of novel spatiotemporal imaging and computational methods allows for linking of the energy of adaptation to the structure, biology and mechanical function of the cell.

Twelve tips for assessing surgical performance and use of technical assessment scales.

Med Teach

January 2017

c Juliane Marie Centre, Centre for Children, Women and Reproduction , University Hospital of Copenhagen, Copenhagen , Denmark.

Using validated assessment scales for technical competence can help structure and standardize assessment and feedback for both the trainee and the supervisor and thereby avoid bias and drive learning. Correct assessment of operative skills can establish learning curves and allow adequate monitoring. However, the assessment of surgical performance is not an easy task, since it includes many proxy parameters, which are hard to measure.

GAPO syndrome: a new syndromic cause of premature ovarian insufficiency.

Climacteric

December 2016

d Center of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering , University of Campinas, Campinas , SP , Brazil.

Premature ovarian insufficiency has the following causes: genetic, autoimmune, metabolic, infectious, and iatrogenic dysfunctions (including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery). However, premature ovarian insufficiency remains without a definite cause in a substantial number of cases. This article describes GAPO syndrome in association with premature ovarian insufficiency, as well as a novel ANTXR1 gene mutation.

The impact of tropomyosins on actin filament assembly is isoform specific.

Bioarchitecture

July 2016

a Single Molecule Science , School of Medical Sciences and ARC Centre of Excellence in Advanced Molecular Imaging, University of New South Wales, Sydney , NSW , Australia.

Tropomyosin (Tpm) is an α helical coiled-coil dimer that forms a co-polymer along the actin filament. Tpm is involved in the regulation of actin's interaction with binding proteins as well as stabilization of the actin filament and its assembly kinetics. Recent studies show that multiple Tpm isoforms also define the functional properties of distinct actin filament populations within a cell.

October 2016

a Neuroscience Research Australia , University of New South Wales, Randwick , New South Wales , Australia.

Objective: Suboptimal child restraint use includes incorrect and/or inappropriate restraint use and increases the risk of injury. Comfort has been suggested as an important factor impacting on optimal use of restraints by children. This article aims to examine the relationships between parent reported comfort and restraint misuse and age-appropriate restraint choice.

Violence against intimate partners threatens public health and social cohesion, and its prevalence could increase with an attitude of justification of such violence. The objective of this article was to use religion and ethnicity as proxies for culture to examine Ghanaian women's acceptance of being beaten. We employed descriptive and binary logistic regression statistics applied to Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey data collected in 2011 in Ghana.
