Developing a Cancer-Focused Library Survey - Assessing the Current Environment and Planning for the Future.

The primary goal of this project is to understand how each National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center library, and all libraries that support cancer research, function within their institutions. Through an in-depth survey focused on three major areas (staff, content and tools procurement, and user services), the research team hopes to determine how a cancer-centric library can be successful in supporting quality patient care, research excellence, and education. Additionally, the survey will examine the necessary minimum staffing levels for librarians and information professionals based on organizational size and degree of research focus.

Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening may be a teachable moment for smoking cessation among African Americans. African Americans have been understudied within the context of LDCT and smoking cessation. The study objective was to evaluate the feasibility of recruiting African Americans to a future longitudinal trial and to obtain sample size estimates for that trial.

Objective: Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive disease with limited therapeutic options. While bevacizumab was approved in 2009 for the treatment of patients with progressive GBM, its impact on overall survival (OS) remains unclear. Colorectal cancer is a significant global health issue with over 1 million cases diagnosed annually throughout the world. 15% of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer will have liver metastases and 60% will develop liver metastases if they have metastatic disease. Oligometastatic colorectal cancer confined to the liver represents an intermediate state in the evolution of metastatic capacity that opens the opportunity for local interventions.

Bone effects of canagliflozin, a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Canagliflozin, a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), lowers blood glucose by inhibiting renal glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. It has been reported that SGLT2 inhibitors may have potential adverse effects on bone, including increased fracture risk and decreased bone mineral density (BMD). Across clinical studies, canagliflozin was not associated with meaningful changes in serum or urine calcium, vitamin D, or parathyroid hormone.

Researchers have developed missing data handling techniques for estimating interaction effects in multiple regression. Extending to latent variable interactions, we investigated full information maximum likelihood (FIML) estimation to handle incompletely observed indicators for product indicator (PI) and latent moderated structural equations (LMS) methods. Drawing on the analytic work on missing data handling techniques in multiple regression with interaction effects, we compared the performance of FIML for PI and LMS analytically.

Towards a new conceptualization of depression in older adult cancer patients: a review of the literature.

Objectives: Identifying depression in older adults with cancer presents a set of unique challenges, as it combines the confounding influences of cancer and its treatment with the developmental changes associated with aging. This paper reviews the phenomenology of depression in older adults, and individuals diagnosed with cancer.

Method: PsychInfo, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched for English-language studies addressing the phenomenology, symptoms, or assessment of depression in older adults and those with cancer.

Contemporary insights into the pathogenesis and treatment of chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms.

This review is based on the deliberations at the 5th John Goldman Colloquium held in Estoril on 2nd October 2015 and the 9th post-ASH International Workshop on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and BCR-ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) which took place on the 10th-11th December 2014, immediately following the 56th American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting. It has been updated since and summarizes the most recent advances in the biology and therapy of these diseases, in particular updates of genetics of MPN, novel insights from mouse MPN models, targeting CML stem cells and its niche; clinical advances include updates on JAK2 inhibitors and other therapeutic approaches to BCR-ABL1-negative MPNs, the use of alpha interferons, updates on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) randomized trials in CML, TKI cessation studies, and optimal monitoring strategies.
