Amblyopia refers to visual impairment resulting from perturbations in visual experience during visual development, typically secondary to strabismus, uncorrected refractive error, and/or deprivation. Amblyopia has traditionally been considered a cortical disease, but the depth of our understanding of this complex neurodevelopmental condition is limited by our ability to appreciate structural pathophysiology in the visual pathway. Recent advances in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) have facilitated numerous studies of the structural changes in the retina and optic nerve, thereby expanding our appreciation for the pathogenesis of this condition.

It is unclear, however, how the effects of such interventions are maintained when interventions are withdrawn. We explored resiliency of people living with HIV in coping with adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) after withdrawing an adherence support intervention of real-time adherence monitors linked to SMS text messages at study closure.

Healthy eating is key to successful management of type 2 diabetes (T2D). As discussed in this narrative review, there are strong indications that spousal support is an important element affecting dietary adherence in T2D. To provide a synthesized review of this evidence, Google Scholar and PubMed were searched, 28 relevant studies were selected, and the results were narratively summarized.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is likely the largest provider of health care for LGBT persons in US. However, histories of homophobia, stigma, discrimination, and past military policies have all had a lasting impact on the health of LGBT veterans. Effects can be seen across healthcare needs, disparities, access, and utilization for or by LGBT veterans.

Africa born (immigrant) women comprise a disproportionate number of Black women living with HIV in the United States. Though they are at risk for mental health disorders, including psychological distress and depression, little is known about their experience with these important predictors of quality of life, retention in care and adherence to antiretroviral therapy. In this qualitative study, we used constructivist grounded theory to explore the psychosocial and mental health challenges of African born women living with HIV in Boston and New York City.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of death in the world. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common form of CVD presentation, but the prevalence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is increasing. Patients with polyvascular disease comprise a very high-risk population that has been infrequently studied.

Objective: This study identifies the health care costs and utilization, as well as comorbidities, in a Medicare population of inclusion body myositis (IBM) patients.
Methods: Medicare patients aged ≥65 years with a diagnosis claim for IBM were identified and matched to a cohort of non-IBM patients based on age, sex, race, calendar year and census region. Generalized linear models were used to estimate health care costs and utilization during the follow-up period.

This article aims to move away from intuitive appeals that link mental disorder with violence such as terrorism, mass murder, and other targeted violence. The article synthesizes the existing evidence base regarding the relationship between mental disorders and personality traits and (a) attitudinal affinities with violent causes, and (b) a number of violent behaviors (including mass murder and terrorism). The evidence base is mixed and the research focus changed across time: from simple and unempirical assertions of causation to an almost complete rejection of their presence to a finer grained and disaggregated understanding.

Background: Prior studies have suggested that physicians and residents may not have sufficient knowledge to appropriately interpret urine drug tests (UDTs) in patients who are prescribed opioids or using illicit substances. Therefore, the aim of this study was to survey psychiatry residents and fellows about their confidence and knowledge in interpreting UDTs in patients with chronic pain or receiving office-based opioid treatment.
Methods: All psychiatry residency and fellowship program directors in the New England states were approached to recruit their trainees to participate in an anonymous online survey including a 7-item knowledge test.

Depression is associated with increased emotional response to stress. This is especially the case during the developmental period of adolescence. Cognitive reappraisal is an effective emotion regulation strategy that has been shown to reduce the impact of emotional response on psychopathology.

Background: Medication treatment for opioid use disorder is effective, and recommended for adolescents, though very few adolescents with opioid use disorder ever receive medications. Reasons include lack of trained medication prescribers for this age group and difficulty in identifying adolescents with substance use disorders. This manuscript examines a novel implementation model of identifying and providing treatment for substance use disorders, including opioid use disorder, in a pediatric primary care practice.

Background: Child malnutrition, a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, is particularly severe in Madagascar, where 47% of children under 5 years are stunted (low height-for-age) and 8% are wasted (low weight-for-height). Widespread poverty and a weak health system have hindered attempts to implement life-saving malnutrition interventions in Madagascar during critical periods for growth faltering.
Objective: This study aimed to shed light on the most important factors associated with child malnutrition, both acute and chronic, and the timing of growth faltering, in Ifanadiana, a rural district of Madagascar.

Background: Previous studies have examined what adolescents find appealing in tobacco and alcohol advertisements and how different themes in advertisements are used to manipulate consumer behaviors. Yet, we know little about the relationship between the themes portrayed in advertisements and youth attitudes towards those themes.
Objectives: This study compared attitudes towards advertisements for different consumer products in a sample of urban and rural adolescent boys in order to examine how key marketing themes impact adolescent attitudes towards those advertisements.

Background and purpose - Trabecular metal (TM) cups have demonstrated favorable results in acetabular revision and their use in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasing. Some evidence show that TM cups might decrease periprosthetic infection (PPI) incidence. We compared the survivorship of TM cups with that of other uncemented cups in primary THA, and evaluated whether the use of TM cups is associated with a lower risk of PPI.

Unlabelled: Phenomenon: Global health education (GHE) is expanding to include socioculturally and resource-different settings, with the goal of developing a workforce with members who can promote health equity locally and globally. GHE is also no longer limited to students from high-income countries (HICs). However, it is unknown whether the motivations and experiences of medical students from HICs and from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) participating in GHE clinical electives through institutional partnerships are similar or different.

Purpose: Volunteer service learning activities, including Student Run Clinics (SRCs), are becoming an increasingly popular extracurricular component of medical education. While there are reports that student clinicians generally enjoy their educational experiences at SRCs, it is not understood how to optimize and measure student engagement in them. To identify key drivers of student engagement a tool was created to measure volunteer experience at the Crimson Care Collaborative (CCC), a primary care SRC.

Depersonalization (DP) is a dissociative phenomenon, characterized by feeling "unreal" or detached from one's own emotions, thoughts, and behavior (APA, 2013). It is considered to be a defense mechanism, employed in response to overwhelming events, whereby thoughts and emotions are suppressed in order to enhance the individual's capacity to function in traumatic environments. DP has been found to co-occur with anxiety and depressive disorders, and childhood emotional maltreatment (EM) has been identified as an important predisposing factor.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy with inadequate treatment options. Approximately one-third of cases have a FLT3-ITD or FLT3-TKD mutation which leads to constitutive tyrosine kinase activation which contributes to leukemogenesis. The FLT3-ITD mutation is associated with a particularly poor prognosis.
