The decline in research for new antimicrobials, combined with the rise in bacterial resistance, has become a critical issue that is expected to worsen over time. As an alternative, health sciences have integrated materials engineering to develop new bioactive compounds through the interaction of nanoparticles with plant-derived compounds. These compounds offer advantages such as high bioavailability and low cost, exemplified by , a plant native to the Brazilian Cerrado.

Mechanism and In Vitro Reconstitution of Mammalian Germ-Cell Development.

Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Biology, Kyoto University Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University Center for iPS Cell Research and Application, Kyoto University.

The germ-cell lineage ensures the creation of new individuals, perpetuating/diversifying the genetic and epigenetic information across the generations. We have been investigating the mechanism for germ-cell development, and have shown that mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs)/induced pluripotent stem cells (miPSCs) are induced into primordial germ cell-like cells (mPGCLCs) with a robust capacity both for spermatogenesis and oogenesis and for contributing to offspring. These works have served as a basis for elucidating key mechanisms during germ-cell development such as epigenetic reprogramming, sex determination, meiotic entry, and nucleome programming.

Introduction: Burns are traumatic events that can affect multiple systems beyond the skin. The rapid removal of the burn eschar is a key step in the effective treatment of severe burns, and surgical debridement is currently the standard of care for eschar removal in burn patients. However, surgical debridement is highly hemorrhagic.

Previously published studies raise the possibility of a link between breast phyllodes tumors (PT) grading and Ki-67 expression. In the current study, the authors conducted a literature review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association between the histological grades of PT and Ki-67 positivity, as well as the potential role of this immunomarker for the grading of PT. Observational studies grading PT and providing Ki-67 expression levels were retrieved from databases searches up to 11 August 2024, with 10 % or more of positive stromal cells being considered the cut-off point.

Changping Laboratory, No. 28 Life Science Park Rd., Beijing 102206, China.

Accurate modeling of host-guest systems is challenging in modern computational chemistry. It requires intermolecular interaction patterns to be correctly described and, more importantly, the dynamic behaviors of macrocyclic hosts to be accurately modeled. Pillar[]arenes as a crucial family of macrocycles play a critical role in host-guest chemistry and biomedical applications.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a major global health concern, affecting maternal and child health. Although genetic predispositions and individual medical histories are well-recognized risk factors, emerging research suggests a significant impact of external factors like neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics. This study systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the association between neighborhood deprivation and GDM incidence.

Background: Infections and sepsis are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in women during pregnancy and the post-pregnancy period. Using data from the 2017 WHO Global Maternal Sepsis Study, we explored the use of early warning systems (EWS) in women at risk of sepsis-related severe maternal outcomes.

Methods: On April 27, 2023, we searched the literature for EWS in clinical use or research in obstetric populations.

Background: Pneumococcal disease, caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, imposes a significant global health burden, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and immunocompromised. The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) is designed to protect against 23 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae. However, there is ongoing debate about its effectiveness in reducing all-cause mortality.

Dynamic Modulation of Ions Solvation Sheath by Butyramide as Molecular Additives in Aqueous Batteries.

J Phys Chem B

December 2024

Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Molecular Therapeutics and New Drug Development, Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Molecule Intelligent Syntheses, School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, East China Normal University, Shanghai 200062, China.

The high activity of water in aqueous battery electrolytes can trigger side reactions, limiting their large-scale application. Additives that form contact pairs (CPs) with cations by coordinating with them can effectively reduce water's activity. However, due to the complex interactions between ions, additives, and solvent molecules and the fact that current strategies for additive screening primarily rely on static physical parameters, the dynamic mechanisms that govern the modulation of ion solvation sheaths are still poorly understood.

Chiba University Center for Forensic Mental Health, Chiba 260-8670, Japan; Department of Anesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou 450052, China. Electronic address:

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is characterized by a decline in cognitive functions, including memory, attention, and executive abilities, following surgery, with no effective therapeutic drugs currently available. Arketamine, the (R)-enantiomer of ketamine, has shown promise in mitigating cognitive deficits in animal models. In this study, we investigated whether arketamine could ameliorate cognitive deficits in a mouse model of POCD, with a focus on the role of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 in its effects.

Gastrointestinal cancer is a malignant condition of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) which affect multi-organs of digestive system, such as esophagus, stomach, biliary system, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. Gastrointestinal cancer is a 5th most common malignant cancer and 4th major cause in cancer-related mortality rate. Various significant facilities are available that have reduced the radio-resistance, chemo-resistance, and their adverse side effects.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the differences in intraoperative nociception, incision size and operative time between midline (OVE) and flank ovariectomy (OVE) in feral or stray cats.

Methods: Two groups of animals, the OVE group (n = 19) and the OVE group (n = 19), were evaluated at six intraoperative time points. Cats assigned to both groups were premedicated with dexmedetomidine (20 μg/kg IM) and methadone (0.

Purpose: This study explores the correlation between sleep duration and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among middle-aged and older adults in China. Furthermore, we aim to investigate the association between sleep duration and incident CVD in this population, while assessing potential variations across different age and gender subgroups.

Methods: Utilizing data from the nationwide prospective survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) conducted in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018, involving 17,596 participants aged 45 years and above, we employed Cox proportional hazards regression models.

Unlabelled: Climate and atmospheric deposition interact with watershed properties to drive dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in lakes. Because drivers of DOC concentration are inter-related and interact, it is challenging to assign a single dominant driver to changes in lake DOC concentration across spatiotemporal scales. Leveraging forty years of data across sixteen lakes, we used structural equation modeling to show that the impact of climate, as moderated by watershed characteristics, has become more dominant in recent decades, superseding the influence of sulfate deposition that was observed in the 1980s.
