Temporal Evolution of Signal Alterations in the Deep Gray Nuclei in term Neonates With Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury: A Comprehensive Review.

The deep gray nuclei are paired interconnected gray nuclei comprising the basal ganglia and thalami. Injury to the deep gray nuclei secondary to hypoxic-ischemic injury is associated with poor short- and long-term clinical outcomes. The signal changes following hypoxic-ischemic injury are dynamic and evolve over a period of time from injury to resolution.

Assessment of risk factors in pyogenic liver abscesses in children.

Background: Pyogenic liver abscess (LA) is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality in developing countries like India. The risk factors predisposing to the LA specifically in children are not known. Studies done in the past largely remain inconclusive and have identified only probable causes.

Factors Affecting Quality of Life in Adolescent Siblings of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Objective: To compare the quality of life (QoL) of adolescent siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD-Sibs) with siblings of typically developing children (TD-Sibs), and study the factors affecting the QoL.

Methods: Between 1 February, 2021 and 31 September, 2021, 40 children aged 10-18 years, whose sibling was suffering from ASD, were enrolled (Study group). 40 age- and sex-matched siblings of children with no clinically apparent neuro- developmental abnormality or behavioral problem were also enrolled (Control group).

Extracorporeal irradiation in malignant bone tumors: Single institution experience and review of literature.

In the last couple of decades, the management of malignant bone tumor (MBT) has seen a sea change. With the advent in surgical technics, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, it has moved from disabling amputation to limb salvage surgery. Extracorporeal irradiation (ECI) and re-implantation of resected bone is a useful method of limb salvage of MBTs.

Transition of Care for Patients with Thalassemia.

Thalassemia is one of the most common hemoglobinopathies affecting a large number of people in India and other countries of South-East Asia. For patients with most severe form of the disease- Transfusion Dependent Thalassemia (TDT), stem cell transplantation or gene therapy are only curative treatment which are not available to most of the patients because of lack of experts, financial constraints and lack of suitable donors. In such situations, most cases are managed with regular blood transfusion and iron chelation therapy.

Settings And Design: A retrospective study which analyzed the data of female patients attending a tertiary care center in National Capital Territory for the treatment of endometrial cancer.

Materials And Methods: Eighty-six histopathologically confirmed cases of carcinoma endometrium were taken from January 2016 to December 2019. Detailed information was collected regarding patient's case history, sociodemographic data (age of presentation, occupation, religion, residence, and substance addiction), clinical presentation, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and known risk factors (age at menarche and menopause, parity, obesity, use of oral contraceptive pills, hormone replacement therapy, and comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes).

Cell-Based Gene Therapy for b-Thalassemia.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved betibeglogene autotemcel (beti-cel), the first cell-based gene therapy for adult and pediatric patients with b-thalassemia in August, 2022. This update details this and other novel therapies that have emerged in the treatment of b-thalassemia, apart from transfusion and iron chelation, with particular focus on newly approved gene therapy.

Effectiveness of a Low Dose Prednisolone Regimen for Treatment of Relapses in Children with Steroid Sensitive Nephrotic Syndrome.

Introduction: There may be a role of reducing the total steroid doses for the treatment of relapses of nephrotic syndrome in children with milder and more stable disease. The primary objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a low-dose prednisolone regimen with standard therapy for the treatment of relapses in steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS) at the end of treatment, the secondary objectives being time to remission and sustained remission after 3 months.

Methods: This randomized controlled trial included a total of 40 children (20 in each group) with SSNS (presently infrequently relapsing course) and with a relapse.

Chronic Hepatitis B and Nephrotic Syndrome in Children: Treatment Outcomes.

Hepatitis B-related glomerulonephritis (GN) is an uncommon but important cause of renal morbidity in children. While immunosuppressive therapy has been tried along with antivirals for treatment, some children may undergo spontaneous remission or achieve remission with antivirals alone. We retrospectively studied the outcomes of children with nephrotic syndrome (NS) and chronic hepatitis B infection treated at our nephrology clinic over a five years period; seven children were included of which six (86%) presented with NS and one with nephritic syndrome.

Tuberculosis has maximum burden among young population in developing countries like India. However, children and elderly form a special group where TB may have atypical presentation. This presents with epidemiological, diagnostic and treatment challenges in these groups which may need special attention in the national programmes for TB.

The present study evaluates the spectrum of sonoelastographic findings in the plantar fascia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM).

Introduction: Distal tibial physeal fractures and talus fractures are rare injuries in children and adolescents. Even rare is a combination of these two fractures. Axial compression is an accepted mechanism of injury in talus fractures with position of foot at the point of impact determining the extended patterns.

Effects of intra-operative infusion of lidocaine on postoperative pain and quality of recovery in patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopic surgery: A randomized controlled trial.

Background And Aims: Early recovery is desirable after day care surgery. Intravenous lidocaine has anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperalgesic, and analgesic effects and by reducing postoperative pain, nausea, vomiting, and duration of postoperative ileus and hospital stay, might be a useful adjuvant to improve recovery after gynecological laparoscopic surgery.

Material And Methods: Fifty female patients, aged 18-55 years, undergoing gynecological laparoscopic surgery were randomly allocated to two groups.

Desmoplastic Fibroma of Radius Managed with Non-Vascularised Fibular Autograft - A Case Report.

Desmoplastic fibromas of bone are extremely rare, slow growing, locally invasive, benign primary bone tumours, bearing close resemblance to the extra-abdominal desmoid tumours of soft tissue. They typically occur in patients around 30 years of age, and most commonly affect the mandible, pelvis and meta-diaphyseal region of long bones. En bloc or wide resection has typically been the treatment of choice to avoid recurrence, however, recent reports support curettage with bone grafting and adjuvant therapy to minimise functional loss.

Antiseizure Medication Withdrawal in Seizure-Free Patients: What is New for the Pediatrician?

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) has recently updated its practise advisory on antiseizure medication withdrawal. The recommendations have been formulated for pediatric as well as adult epilepsy, with emphasis on the risk factors for seizure relapse, occurrence of status epilepticus or death on drug withdrawal, and effect on quality of life in both age groups. We herein list the important aspects of the updated recommendations in pediatric epilepsy for the benefit of the general pediatricians.
