Aim: Hydrocephalus surgery with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt is a life-saving treatment, but it has been associated with a high risk of dysfunction and complications. We investigated whether infants who received a ventriculoperitoneal shunt below 12 months of age had a reduced risk of acute shunt dysfunction if they were included in a structured follow-up programme.

Methods: A population-based, retrospective chart review was performed at Uppsala University Children's Hospital, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) to see how many fit the criteria for psoriatic arthritis (PsA) 18 years after the disease began.
  • Of the 510 initially enrolled patients, only 434 participated in follow-up, with 9.4% meeting the CASPAR criteria for PsA, indicating CASPAR may be more effective in identifying these patients than the ILAR criteria.
  • Key predictors for developing PsA included specific joint involvement at disease onset and the presence of psoriasis, nail abnormalities, or dactylitis, with dactylitis being the strongest predictor.

Objective: Anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) have been detected in sputum and saliva, indicating that anti-modified protein antibodies (AMPA) can be produced at mucosal sites in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the body's largest mucosal compartment, the gut, has not yet been examined. We therefore investigated the presence of several AMPA (ACPA, anti-carbamylated protein antibodies [anti-CarP], and anti-acetylated protein antibodies [AAPA]) at different mucosal sites, including the intestinal tract.

A case of enamel renal syndrome from a novel genetic mutation, multidisciplinary management and long-term prognosis.

Ups J Med Sci

October 2024

Institute of Surgical Sciences, Department of Plastic and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • Enamel renal syndrome (ERS) presents unique challenges in diagnosis and treatment, primarily involving issues with enamel formation and kidney health, making patient management complex and often requiring specialized dental care.
  • A case study demonstrates the long-term management of a patient diagnosed with ERS after a delay in diagnosis, including genetic confirmation and ongoing nephrological monitoring for related complications.
  • The findings emphasize the necessity for integrated dental and medical care for patients with syndromic disorders, as well as the need for continuous monitoring of renal health, which shows a favorable prognosis despite the intricate nature of the condition.

Background: The links between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the high burden of cardiovascular disease remain unclear. We aimed to explore the association between selected inflammatory and angiogenic biomarkers, kidney function and long-term outcome in patients with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and to test the hypothesis that CKD status modifies this association.

Methods: A total of 1293 ACS patients hospitalized between 2008 and 2015 were followed until 31 December 2017.

If you want to run faster, don't just buy a new pair of shoes; also consider your training methods and where you run. This supplement examines six countries that have run faster than others in reducing under-five mortality, taking an implementation research approach, with country case studies done with local researchers and local institutions. Key generalizable learnings are to choose and adapt implementation strategies to context, design strategies to target the most vulnerable, systematically learn from implementation experience, and to leverage non-health-sector contributions.

Background: Intensive care unit-to-unit transfer due to temporary shortage of beds is increasing in Sweden. Transportation induces practical hazards, and the change of health care provider may prolong the length of stay in intensive care. We previously showed that the risk of death at 90 days did not differ between patients transferred due to a shortage of beds and non-transferred patients with a similar burden of illness in a tertiary intensive care unit.

Article Synopsis
  • - Current research on OCD suggests that rare copy number variants (CNVs) may play a significant role in increasing risk, particularly large CNVs that overlap with protein-coding regions.
  • - An analysis involving over 2,200 OCD cases and 3,600 controls showed that OCD cases had a higher incidence of these large CNVs, especially deletions affecting crucial genes.
  • - Findings indicated that certain genetic variations were linked with comorbid autism in OCD patients and poorer treatment response, highlighting the need for further investigation into rare genetic factors in OCD.

N-(Heteroaryl)thiophene sulfonamides as angiotensin AT2 receptor ligands.

Eur J Med Chem

February 2024

The Beijer Laboratory, Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Science for Life Laboratory, BMC, Uppsala University, Box 591, 751 24, Uppsala, Sweden. Electronic address:

Two series of N-(heteroaryl)thiophene sulfonamides, encompassing either a methylene imidazole group or a tert-butylimidazolylacetyl group in the meta position of the benzene ring, have been synthesized. An ATR selective ligand with a K of 42 nM was identified in the first series and in the second series, six ATR selective ligands with significantly improved binding affinities and K values of <5 nM were discovered. The binding modes to ATR were explored by docking calculations combined with molecular dynamics simulations.

Aesthetic use of low doses of Botulinum toxin (BoNT) injections into the facial muscles has become a leading non-surgical aesthetic treatment worldwide to reduce facial wrinkles, including glabellar lines, forehead lines, and periorbital wrinkles. Within these aesthetic applications, BoNT injections intend to reduce and prevent wrinkles, and the recommended usage of 2 years is often exceeded, which may result in atrophy of the injected muscles. The long-term effects of BoNT injections in the facial muscles and the evidence of diffusion of BoNT to surrounding muscles are obvious pitfalls and challenges for clinical neurophysiologists in differential diagnosing neuromuscular transmission failures.

From Feynman's ratchet to time crystalline molecular motors.

J Chem Phys

Center for Quantum Technology Research, Key Laboratory of Advanced Optoelectronic Quantum Architecture and Measurements (MOE), School of Physics, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing 100081, China.

Cats have an instinctive ability to use the connection governing parallel transport in the space of shapes to land safely on their feet. Here, we argue that the concept of connection, which is extensively used in general relativity and other parts of theoretical physics, also explains the impressive performance of molecular motors by enabling molecules to evade the conclusions of Feynman's ratchet-and-pawl analysis. First, we demonstrate the emergence of directed rotational motion from shape changes, which is independent of angular momentum.

Background: The nonuniform benefit of tricuspid annuloplasty may be explained by the proportionality of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) severity to right ventricular (RV) area. The purpose of this study was to delineate distinct morphological phenotypes of functional TR and investigate their prognostic implications in patients undergoing tricuspid annuloplasty during left-sided valvular surgery.

Methods: The ratios of pre-procedural effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA) with right ventricular end-diastolic area (RVDA) were retrospectively assessed in 290 patients undergoing tricuspid annuloplasty.

The role of imaging in the selection of patients for HFpEF therapy.

Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Imaging

September 2023

Department of Medical Sciences, Cardiology and Clinical Physiology, Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital, 751 85 Uppsala, Sweden.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) traditionally has been characterized as a form of heart failure without therapeutic options, in particular with a lack of response to the established therapies of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, this is no longer true. Besides physical exercise, risk factor modification, aldosterone blocking agents, and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, specific therapies are emerging for specific HFpEF etiologies, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or cardiac amyloidosis.
