The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is a complex regulator comprising hormones, proteins, and enzymes. The discovery of the RAAS and its pharmacological manipulation has been essential in the management of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension. Beyond the benefits of hypertension, RAAS inhibition has implications for heart failure, atherosclerotic disease, and kidney disease.

In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), barriers such as low system readiness, contextual mismatches, and resource limitations impede effective implementation of evidence-based interventions. This commentary offers insights into overcoming these challenges with a case study of the PRISM project, designed to reduce behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in older adults living in Thailand. The case highlights how combining two evidence-based models - the clinical intervention and the implementation science process enhances program success.

Virtual Expansion of the YMCA's Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring (BPSM) Program: Using Telehealth to Adapt an Evidence-Based Program to Reach Rural Communities in South Carolina.

J Public Health Manag Pract

June 2024

Author Affiliations: South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Columbia, South Carolina (Mss Grant, Myers, and James); Rock Hill, South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina (Mss Patterson and Garst and Mr Tucker), and University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina (Mr Suthar).

Context: Disparities in cardiovascular disease prevalence and death exist among South Carolina's rural residents. Blood pressure self-monitoring (BPSM), where individuals measure their own blood pressure outside of the clinical environment, coupled with additional support, is an evidence-based, cost-effective strategy that is underutilized at large.

Program: The YMCA's BPSM program is an evidence-based, 4-month program that includes 2 individualized office hours with a Healthy Heart Ambassador and 4 nutrition education sessions per month.

Objective: To compare thrombus removal and residual venous symptoms and signs of disease following interventional treatment of iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis (DVT) with mechanical thrombectomy (MT) and pharmacomechanical catheter directed thrombolysis (PCDT).

Methods: Retrospective cohort analysis of propensity score matched subgroups from the multicentre prospective MT ClotTriever Outcomes registry and the PCDT arm of the randomised Acute Venous Thrombosis: Thrombus Removal with Adjunctive Catheter Directed Thrombolysis trial. Patients with bilateral DVT, symptom duration greater than four weeks, isolated femoral-popliteal disease, or incomplete case data were excluded.

Purpose: We determine how stakeholders prioritize the importance of oncologic outcomes, patient-reported outcomes (PROs), and cancer-related health care costs.

Methods: A survey was distributed to the National Clinical Trials Network Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology cooperative group membership from May 14 to June 30, 2022. Respondents were asked to rate (5-point Likert scale) and rank (1-9) evidence-based value domains: overall survival, treatment toxicities/complications, quality of life (QOL), financial toxicity, access to care, compliance with evidence-based care, health system performance, scientific discovery and innovation, and cost to the health care system.

How does nutrition improve? We need to understand better what drives both positive and negative change in different contexts, and what more can be done to reduce malnutrition. Since 2015, the Stories of Change in Nutrition studies have analysed and documented experiences in many different African and Asian countries, to foster empirically-grounded experiential learning across contexts. This article provides an overview of findings from 14 studies undertaken in nine countries in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Europe between 2017 and 2021.

Background: Recent studies suggest poorer outcomes and higher costs associated with patients treated by podiatrists, yet no studies have evaluated patient perception and preference for foot and ankle providers. This study aims to determine patient perception of training for podiatrists compared to orthopaedic surgeons and patient preference for type of provider seen.

Methods: A 20-question survey was administered to new patients seeing either a podiatrist or foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeon.

Currently, the tracking of seizures is highly subjective, dependent on qualitative information provided by the patient and family instead of quantifiable seizure data. Usage of a seizure detection device to potentially detect seizure events in a population of epilepsy patients has been previously done. Therefore, we chose the Fitbit Charge 2 smart watch to determine if it could detect seizure events in patients when compared to continuous electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring for those admitted to an epilepsy monitoring unit.
