The objective of the study was to compare psychiatric outcomes in adults with and without history of pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). Youth ages 6 to 14 years hospitalized for TBI from 1992 to 1994 were assessed at baseline and at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months post-injury. In the current study, psychiatric assessments were repeated at 24 years post-injury with the same cohort, now adults ages 29 to 39 years.

This study explores the heterogeneity in effects of the 2014 Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansions on insurance coverage, health care access, and health status of low-income women with dependent children by pre-expansion state-level income eligibility. We employ a quasiexperimental difference-in-differences design comparing outcome changes in Medicaid expansion states to nonexpansion states. We estimate effects separately for three groups of expansion states based on pre-expansion (2013) parent income eligibility: low pre-expansion eligibility (<90% of federal poverty level [FPL]), high eligibility (90% to <138% FPL), and full eligibility (≥138% FPL).

Noninvasive biomarkers that guide initial therapy decisions are needed. We hypothesized that CellSearch circulating tumor cell (CTC) count, an FDA-cleared assay in metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC), is a relevant biomarker in mCSPC.

Enteritis as the only manifestation of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in adolescents without features of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) or a prior history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been described. We report two adolescent patients (a 14-year-old male and a 20-year-old pregnant female) presenting to tertiary-care centers in the United States with severe enteritis as the only manifestation of COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The patients were hospitalized with acute abdominal pain and gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, with no evidence of MIS-C, and were previously healthy with no history of IBD.

Background: The genetic risk communication from proband to relatives varies from family to family, and patients often need support with the communication of genetic test results and making decisions to manage hereditary cancer risks.
Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize the communication of BRCA1 or BRCA2 (BRCA1/2) genetic risk from proband to first-degree relatives (FDRs) using a social network framework.
Methods: We characterized network and nonnetwork factors to explore their association with which FDRs were told about the genetic risk and whether or not relatives underwent genetic testing.

Adolescent pregnancies are a global health problem with over 16 million children born to this age group globally. Adolescent females also represent almost half of all adolescent global migrants. Adolescent pregnancy by itself is associated with poor health care access and morbidities; the additional risk of social insecurity in the case of undocumented adolescent migrants leads to higher risks for the mother and newborn.

Inadequate and excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) is associated with adverse health outcomes for mother and child. Health care providers are well positioned to help women achieve appropriate GWG. This systematic review examined associations between women's report of provider advice on GWG and women's compliance with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) GWG guidelines.

Neonicotinoid insecticides are widely used in both urban and agricultural settings around the world. Historically, neonicotinoid insecticides have been viewed as ideal replacements for more toxic compounds, like organophosphates, due in part to their perceived limited potential to affect the environment and human health. This critical review investigates the environmental fate and toxicity of neonicotinoids and their metabolites and the potential risks associated with exposure.

The purpose of this study was to characterize acute changes in inflammatory pathways in the mouse eye after blast-mediated traumatic brain injury (bTBI) and to determine whether modulation of these pathways could protect the structure and function of retinal ganglion cells (RGC). The bTBI was induced in C57BL/6J male mice by exposure to three 20 psi blast waves directed toward the head with the body shielded, with an inter-blast interval of one hour. Acute cytokine expression in retinal tissue was measured through reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) four hours post-blast.

Successful translation of promising neuroprotective therapies will likely require more precise identification of target populations through greater study of crucial biological factors like age and sex. A growing body of work supports the impact of these factors on response to and recovery from TBI.

Background: Injuries to the posterolateral corner (PLC) may occur concurrently with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
Purpose/hypothesis: This study evaluated the outcomes of patients who underwent operative management of PLC injuries concurrently with ACL reconstruction in a prospective multicenter cohort. We hypothesized that there would be no differences in outcomes between patients who were treated with PLC repair and PLC reconstruction.

The primary objective of this study was to enhance the antitumor efficacy of a model cancer vaccine through co-delivery of pentaerythritol lipid A (PELA), an immunological adjuvant, and a model tumor antigen, ovalbumin (OVA), separately loaded into polyanhydride particles (PA). In vitro experiments showed that encapsulation of PELA into PA (PA-PELA) significantly enhanced its stimulatory capacity on dendritic cells as evidenced by increased levels of the cell surface costimulatory molecules, CD80/CD86. In vivo experiments showed that PA-PELA, in combination with OVA-loaded PA (PA-OVA), significantly expanded the OVA-specific CD8 T lymphocyte population compared to PA-OVA alone.

Conditions of extended bed rest and limb immobilization can initiate rapid and significant loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. Physical rehabilitation is standard practice following a period of disuse, yet mobility may be severely compromised, and recovery is commonly delayed or incomplete in special populations. Thus, a novel approach toward recovery of muscle mass is highly desired.

Objective: Although smoking is a risk factor for cardiovascular and rheumatic disease severity, only 10% of rheumatology visits document cessation counseling. After implementing a rheumatology clinic protocol that increased tobacco quitline referrals 20-fold, we undertook this study to examine patients' barriers and facilitators to smoking cessation based on prior rheumatology experiences, to solicit reactions to the new cessation protocol, and to identify patient-centered outcomes or signs of cessation progress following improved care.
Methods: We recruited 19 patients who smoke (12 with rheumatoid arthritis [RA] and 7 with systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE]) to participate in 1 of 3 semistructured focus groups.
