Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are more prevalent in males than females. Furthermore, they typically showed abnormally high delta (< 4 Hz) and low alpha (8-10 Hz) rhythms from resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) activity. Here, we hypothesized that those abnormalities may depend on the patient's sex.

January 2025

Health and Movement Consultation, Division of Pediatric Specialties, Department of Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Geneva University Hospitals and University of Geneva, Switzerland.

Motivation plays an important role in the field of medicine, as it significantly influences behavior change, such as becoming more physically active. This study aimed to investigate the role of motivation in engagement in a physical activity and its impact on quality of life for adolescents suffering from obesity. We assessed the time dedicated to physical activities, the type of motivation, and the relationship between those factors and their quality of life.

Setting up a global SARS-CoV-2 surveillance system requires an understanding of how virus isolation and propagation practices, use of animal or human sera, and different neutralisation assay platforms influence assessment of SARS-CoV-2 antigenicity. In this study, with the contribution of 15 independent laboratories across all WHO regions, we carried out a controlled analysis of neutralisation assay platforms using the first WHO International Standard for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (source: NIBSC). Live virus isolates (source: WHO BioHub or individual labs) or spike plasmids (individual labs) for pseudovirus production were used to perform neutralisation assays using the same serum panels.

Levosimendan is a positive inotrope and vasodilator used in patients with acute and chronic decompensated heart failure. It is metabolized into OR-1855 (inactive metabolite), which is further acetylated into OR-1896 (active metabolite having a prolonged half-life, hence a sustained effect). Levosimendan represents a valuable alternative to traditional inotropes with broad clinical applications in critically ill patients with cardiogenic shock, advanced heart failure and post-cardiac surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the effectiveness of rasterstereography versus low-dose, biplanar spine radiography in measuring thoracic kyphosis angles in patients with Scheuermann's disease.
  • The research involved 52 patients who underwent both imaging techniques on the same day, revealing strong correlations in TK angle measurements.
  • Results showed that rasterstereography can reliably assess TK angles, potentially decreasing the need for radiographic scans and reducing patients' exposure to radiation.

This study presents a novel electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of pepsinogen I, a potential biomarker for gastric cancer, based on a unique PdAgPt/MoSnanocomposite. The key innovation lies in the synergistic combination of trimetallic PdAgPt nanoparticles with MoSnanoflowers, which has not been previously reported for pepsinogen I detection. This hybrid material demonstrates exceptional electron transfer properties and a significantly larger electroactive surface area compared to conventional materials.

Total Knee Arthroplasty has well-established success in relieving knee pain and improving function but patients do not reach functional levels of control groups after surgery and 20% of patients remain unsatisfied. To understand the different patient profiles and develop patient-specific approaches of care, functional phenotypes based on knee biomechanics during gait have been evaluated. To widen the understanding of patient's function, it seems crucial to consider the gait devieations at the whole body level.

Background: Thiamine and ascorbic acid have been proposed to mitigate the devastating consequences of sepsis and septic shock. To date, randomized controlled trials have failed to demonstrate a benefit of these therapies and heterogeneity of treatment effect is suspected. In this study, we aimed at assessing the heterogeneity of treatment effect of thiamine (B1) and the combination of B1 plus ascorbic acid (AA + B1) in critically ill patients with sepsis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The ToxiLaus study investigates how environmental trace elements (TEs) affect human health, particularly their role in disease onset and development.
  • - The initial phase focused on measuring the urinary concentrations of 23 TEs in over 5,800 participants and examining their associations with smoking, metabolic syndrome, and body mass index (BMI).
  • - Key findings included that smoking status and metabolic syndrome were linked to specific TEs like Cd and Zn, and significant differences in TEs concentrations were found across different BMI groups, paving the way for further analysis in later phases.

Article Synopsis
  • Dementia, particularly with severe behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD), greatly affects quality of life and is a main cause of death in older adults; this study looked at factors predicting mortality in these patients.
  • Over 4 years, 32.5% of 508 participants with severe BPSD died, with non-survivors generally being older, more likely male, and showing greater symptom severity and lower cognitive and functional capabilities at the start.
  • Key mortality predictors identified were male sex, older age at diagnosis, higher BPSD severity scores, lower cognitive function, worse daily living capabilities, and lower quality of life, while the use of antidepressants was linked to a reduced mortality risk.

Safety notices and registry outlier data measure different aspects of safety and performance of total knee implants: a comparative study of safety notices and register outliers.

Acta Orthop

November 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden; Safety & Security Science and Centre for Safety in Healthcare, Delft University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands.

Background And Purpose:  Safety notices for medical devices such as total knee arthroplasty (TKA) implants may indicate problems in their design or performance that require corrective action to prevent patient harm. Safety notices are often published on national Ministries of Health or regulatory agencies websites. It is unknown whether problems triggering safety notices identify the same implants as those identified by registries as "outlier.

Glucocorticoids versus glucocorticoids plus cyclophosphamide in eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis with poor-prognosis factors.

J Autoimmun

December 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Cochin Hospital, National Referral Center for Rare Systemic Autoimmune and Autoinflammatory Diseases of Ile de France, East and West, Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, F-75014 Paris, France; Paris Cité University, F-75006, Paris, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of combining glucocorticoids (GCs) with cyclophosphamide (CYC) for treating patients with poor-prognosis eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) compared to using GCs alone.
  • Data from a European multicenter database were analyzed, involving 209 patients and focusing on relapse rates and other related outcomes over 12 to 24 months.
  • Results indicated that adding CYC significantly reduced the risk of relapse and related complications compared to GCs alone, suggesting a beneficial role for CYC in the treatment of poor-prognosis EGPA.

More than 110,000 Europeans died as a result of the record-breaking temperatures of 2022 and 2023. A new generation of impact-based early warning systems, using epidemiological models to transform weather forecasts into health forecasts for targeted population subgroups, is an essential adaptation strategy to increase resilience against climate change. Here, we assessed the skill of an operational continental heat-cold-health forecasting system.

Article Synopsis
  • The Human Proteome Project (HPP) aims to identify every protein-coding gene’s isoform and integrate proteomics into studies of human health and disease.
  • Major updates include the retirement of neXtProt as the knowledge base, with UniProtKB now serving as the reference proteome, and GENCODE providing the target protein list.
  • Recent data shows that 93% of protein-coding genes have been expressed, leaving 1,273 non-expressed proteins, along with the introduction of a new scoring system for functional annotation of proteins.

Objectives: Transparent trial conduct requires prospective registration of a randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) before the enrollment of the first participant. We aimed to (1) estimate the proportion of RCTs that are prospectively registered and analyze the time trends and factors linked to registration timing and (2) assess the reasons for nonadherence to prospective registration and explore ways to improve compliance. We studied trials published in rheumatology as a case study.
