Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is frequently used to treat peripheral wounds or decompression sickness. Evidence suggests that HBO therapy can provide neuroprotection and has an anti-inflammatory impact after neurological injury, including spinal cord injury (SCI). Using a simulated adult COVID-19 patient with hypoxemia, we investigated whether caregivers interrupting oxygen flow by manually occluding oxygen tubing with pliers during exhalation can conserve oxygen while maintaining oxygenation. Oxygen pinching reduced oxygen use by 51% to 64%, maintained simulated oxygen saturation between 88% and 90%, and increased simulated average alveolar partial pressure of oxygen from a room air baseline of approximately 131 to 294-424 mm Hg compared with 607 mm Hg with 10 liters per minute (LPM) continuous oxygen flow. Simulation provided a methodology to rapidly evaluate a technique that has begun to be used with COVID-19 patients in low-resource environments experiencing an acute oxygen shortage.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) is a potentially curative treatment for many hematologic conditions. Despite advances in conditioning and supportive measures, however, there remain significant comorbidities that threaten survivorship. Adverse effects of stress-related biobehavioral processes-defined here as the interactions of behavioral, psychological, and socioenvironmental factors with biology-impact immune recovery and function and are particularly salient in the HCT context, given the importance of immune reconstitution for improved survivorship.

The BH-3 mimetic venetoclax overcomes apoptosis and therapy resistance caused by high expression of BCL2 or loss of BH3-only protein function. Although a promising therapy for hematologic malignancies, increased expression of anti-apoptotic MCL-1 or BCL-XL, as well as other resistance mechanisms prevent a durable response to venetoclax. Recent studies demonstrate that agents targeting epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methyltransferase inhibitors, histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors, histone methyltransferase EZH2 inhibitors, or bromodomain reader protein inhibitors may disable oncogenic gene expression signatures responsible for venetoclax resistance.

Behavioral lifestyle interventions are the foundation of adolescent obesity treatment. Tailoring an intervention using adolescent stakeholder engagement during the development process could improve intervention effectiveness. Adolescents with overweight/obesity ages 14-19 ( = 41) participated in 11 sex-specific focus groups (girls = 6, boys = 5) and were asked their preferences regarding who should lead the intervention and be involved, what the messaging of the program should be, how to make the program engaging and maintain participation, and how to best measure nutrition intake and activity.

The value of utilizing a multigene pharmacogenetic panel to tailor pharmacotherapy is contingent on the prevalence of prescribed medications with an actionable pharmacogenetic association. The Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) has categorized over 35 gene-drug pairs as "level A," for which there is sufficiently strong evidence to recommend that genetic information be used to guide drug prescribing.
