Maximal exercise limitation in functionally overreached triathletes: role of cardiac adrenergic stimulation.

Functional overreaching (F-OR) induced by heavy load endurance training programs has been associated with reduced heart rate values both at rest and during exercise. Because this phenomenon may reflect an impairment of cardiac response, this research was conducted to test this hypothesis. Thirty-five experienced male triathletes were tested (11 control and 24 overload subjects) before overloading (Pre), immediately after overloading (Mid), and after a 2-wk taper period (Post).

Computing siRNA and piRNA overlap signatures.

High-throughput sequencing approaches opened the possibility to precisely map full populations of small RNAs to the genomic loci from which they originate. A bioinformatic approach revealed a strong tendency of sense and antisense piRNAs to overlap with each other over ten nucleotides and had a major role in understanding the mechanisms of piRNA biogenesis. Using similar approaches, it is possible to detect a tendency of sense and antisense siRNAs to overlap over 19 nucleotides.

High-dose cytarabine in induction treatment improves the outcome of adult patients younger than age 46 years with acute myeloid leukemia: results of the EORTC-GIMEMA AML-12 trial.

Purpose: Cytarabine plays a pivotal role in the treatment of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Most centers use 7 to 10 days of cytarabine at a daily dose of 100 to 200 mg/m(2) for remission induction. Consensus has not been reached on the benefit of higher dosages of cytarabine.

We study the probability of extinction for single-type and multi-type continuous-time linear birth-and-death processes in a finite Markovian environment. The probability of extinction is equal to 1 almost surely if and only if the basic reproduction number R(0) is ≤ 1, the key point being to identify a suitable definition of R(0) for such a result to hold.

On the probability of extinction in a periodic environment.

For a certain class of multi-type branching processes in a continuous-time periodic environment, we show that the extinction probability is equal to (resp. less than) 1 if the basic reproduction number R(0) is less than (resp. bigger than) 1.

The concept of basic reproduction number R0 in population dynamics is studied in the case of random environments. For simplicity the dependence between successive environments is supposed to follow a Markov chain. R0 is the spectral radius of a next-generation operator.

Mechanosensitive shivering of model tissues under controlled aspiration.

During embryonic development and wound healing, the mechanical signals transmitted from cells to their neighbors induce tissue rearrangement and directional movements. It has been observed that forces exerted between cells in a developing tissue under stress are not always monotonically varying, but they can be pulsatile. Here we investigate the response of model tissues to controlled external stresses.

Recurrence of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis after kidney transplantation: strategies and outcome.

Purpose Of Review: Steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome/focal segmental glomerulonephritis (FSGS) is the primary renal disease in approximately 10% of pediatric patients receiving a renal allograft. Risk factors for recurrence are a chronological age between 6 and 15 years at onset of the nephrotic syndrome and a rapid progression of the disease in the native kidneys leading to end-stage renal disease in less than 3 years. With rapid recurrence of FSGS and loss of the allograft, further renal transplants also carry a high likelihood of recurrence of nephrotic syndrome.

Photoresponsive viscosity and host-guest association in aqueous mixtures of poly-cyclodextrin with azobenzene-modified poly(acrylic)acid.

In aqueous solutions, beta-cyclodextrin (CD) and cyclodextrin-containing polymers (PolCD) associate with azobenzene-modified polyacrylate (AMP). Inclusion complexes in solution of CD (or PolCD) and AMP, and the viscosity of these mixtures, have been studied as a function of the composition of AMP and concentrations of samples. AMPs are random copolymers containing a low fraction of a light-responsive hydrophobic moieties (<10 mol % of 6-[4-alkylamido]phenylazobenzene acrylamide), and a charged hydrophilic unit, sodium acrylate.

Imaging medullary cystic kidney disease with magnetic resonance.

Medullary cystic kidney disease is characterized by multiple renal cysts at the corticomedullary boundary area, by autosomal dominant inheritance, and by onset of chronic renal failure in the third decade of life. Its clinical manifestations are often insignificant and nonspecific. Furthermore, its diagnosis may be difficult in sporadic forms where genetic linkage analysis cannot be performed.

Expression of low-affinity Fc gamma receptor by a human metastatic melanoma line.

The class IIa of low-affinity receptors for the Fc region of IgG, Fc gamma RIIa, are expressed on immune cells. The cross-linking of Fc gamma RIIa by complexed IgG triggers activation of protein tyrosine kinase and internalization of immune complexes. In this report, we demonstrate the expression of Fc gamma RIIa by a human melanoma cell line (VIO) derived from a metastasis of a patient with regressive melanoma.

Selective modulation of lipopolysaccharide-induced death and cytokine production by various muramyl peptides.

Pretreatment of animals with the adjuvant muramyl dipeptide enhances both the production of circulating tumor necrosis factor and the sensitivity to the lethal effect of a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. The present study examined the capacity of various adjuvant muramyl dipeptide derivatives to potentiate responsiveness to LPS administration. Cytokine levels in serum were determined at various time intervals after LPS administration by bioassays and immunoassays; the cytokines examined were tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1, interleukin-6, and gamma interferon.
