Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of coronary steno-occlusive disease and acute myocardial infarction is the leading cause of death in industrialized countries. In patients with acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), there is unquestionable evidence that primary percutaneous coronary intervention providing recanalization of the infarct related artery (IRA) is the preferred reperfusion strategy. Nevertheless, up to 50% of patients with STEMI have multivessel coronary artery disease defined as at least 50% stenosis exclusive of IRA.

Carcinomas of the oral cavity and oropharynx belong among the ten most common malignancies in the human population. The prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is determined by the degree of invasiveness of the primary tumor and by the extent of metastatic spread into regional and distant lymph nodes. Moreover, the level of the perineural invasion itself associates with tumor localization, invasion's extent, and the presence of nodal metastases.

The use of biomarkers in the diagnosis and treatment of obstruction of the upper urinary tract in children.

Biomed Pap Med Fac Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub

September 2022

Department of Urology, University Hospital Olomouc and Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Palacky University Olomouc, Czech Republic.

Antenatal hydronephrosis, dilatation of the upper urinary tract (UUTD), is a common finding on prenatal ultrasound. One of the most common causes is ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction. Although such prenatally diagnosed UUTD resolves spontaneously in most newborns, further examination of these children is advocated to prevent possible irreversible kidney damage, and ultrasound is mainly used for this.

Background: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) primary glomerulonephritis is characterized by the deposition of circulating immune complexes composed of polymeric IgA1 molecules with altered O-glycans (Gd-IgA1) and anti-glycan antibodies in the kidney mesangium. The mesangial IgA deposits and serum IgA1 contain predominantly light (L) chains, but the nature and origin of such IgA remains enigmatic.

Methods: We analyzed L chain expression in peripheral blood B cells of 30 IgAN patients, 30 healthy controls (HCs), and 18 membranous nephropathy patients selected as disease controls (non-IgAN).

Although 21 pancreatic cancer susceptibility loci have been identified in individuals of European ancestry through genome-wide association studies (GWASs), much of the heritability of pancreatic cancer risk remains unidentified. A recessive genetic model could be a powerful tool for identifying additional risk variants. To discover recessively inherited pancreatic cancer risk loci, we performed a re-analysis of the largest pancreatic cancer GWAS, the Pancreatic Cancer Cohort Consortium (PanScan) and the Pancreatic Cancer Case-Control Consortium (PanC4), including 8,769 cases and 7,055 controls of European ancestry.

In accordance with the 3 Rs principle (to replace, reduce and refine) animal models in biomedical research, we have developed and applied a new approach for sampling and analyzing hair follicles in various experimental settings. This involves use of a convenient device for non-invasive collection of hair follicles and processing methods that provide sufficient amounts of biological material to replace stressful and painful biopsies. Moreover, the main components of hair follicles are live cells of epithelial origin, which are highly relevant for most types of malignant tumors, so they provide opportunities for studying aging-related pathologies including cancer.

The "Different Hearing" program (DHP) is an educational activity aimed at stimulating musical creativity of children and adults by group composing in the classroom, alternative to the mainstream model of music education in Czechia. Composing in the classroom in the DHP context does not use traditional musical instruments or notation, instead, the participants use their bodies, sounds originating from common objects as well as environmental sounds as the "elements" for music composition by the participants' team, with the teacher initiating and then participating and coordinating the creative process, which ends with writing down a graphical score and then performing the composition in front of an audience. The DHP methodology works with a wide definition of musical composition.
