Our aim is to review what is known about QoL in pituitary tumours patients and to highlight the areas worth improving, for the patient's well being.

Three-dimensional models of topological insulators: engineering of Dirac cones and robustness of the spin texture.

We design three-dimensional models of topological insulator thin films, showing a tunability of the odd number of Dirac cones driven by the atomic-scale geometry at the boundaries. A single Dirac cone at the Γ-point can be obtained as well as full suppression of quantum tunneling between Dirac states at geometrically differentiated surfaces. The spin texture of surface states changes from a spin-momentum-locking symmetry to a surface spin randomization upon the introduction of bulk disorder.

We report on first-principles calculations of spin-dependent properties in graphene induced by its interaction with a nearby magnetic insulator (europium oxide, EuO). The magnetic proximity effect results in spin polarization of graphene π orbitals by up to 24%, together with a large exchange-splitting band gap of about 36 meV. The position of the Dirac cone is further shown to depend strongly on the graphene-EuO interlayer.

The catalytic decomposition of hydrocarbons on transition-metal surfaces has attracted increasing interest as a method to prepare high quality graphene layers. Here, we study the optimal reaction path for the preparation of graphene nanoislands of selected shape using controlled decomposition of propene on Ni(111). Scanning tunneling microscopy performed at different stages of the reaction provides insight into the temperature and dose-dependent growth of graphene islands, which precedes the formation of monolayer graphene.

Atomoxetine (ATX) is a non-stimulant drug approved for the treatment of children and adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We aimed to study the excretion profile of ATX and its principal metabolites 4-hydroxyatomoxetine (4-OH-ATX) and N-desmethylatomoxetine (desmethyl-ATX) in oral fluid and plasma of ADHD paediatric subjects, after administration of different dosage regimens. Perinatal antiretroviral (ARV) exposure has been related to hyperlactatemia and lactic acidosis in infants born to HIV-infected mothers. Our objective was to determine the incidence of these conditions during the first year of life in uninfected infants born to HIV-infected mothers and compare the data with infants born to mothers with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. We investigated the relationships between hyperlactatemia and neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders by conducting a prospective, comparative cohort study (October 2004 to October 2007) consecutively including children of HIV- and HCV-infected mothers.

In the cell, protein folding into stable globular conformations is in competition with aggregation into non-functional and usually toxic structures, since the biophysical properties that promote folding also tend to favor intermolecular contacts, leading to the formation of β-sheet-enriched insoluble assemblies. The formation of protein deposits is linked to at least 20 different human disorders, ranging from dementia to diabetes. Furthermore, protein deposition inside cells represents a major obstacle for the biotechnological production of polypeptides.

A 27-year-old woman of Moldavian origin presented at the age of 15 with progressive proximal limb weakness and painful cramps in her calf muscles. Clinical examination revealed prominent muscle weakness in proximal muscles of the lower extremities and distal anterior compartment of legs, and mild weakness in shoulder girdle muscles. In addition, she had marked calf hypertrophy, muscle atrophy involving the anterior and posterior compartments of the thighs, and the distal anterior compartment of legs, as well as mild scapular winging and hyperlordosis.

Changes in the composition and physical properties of the mucous gel covering the endometrial surface are detected during the menstrual cycle and in pathological conditions. The aim of this study is to analyze the expression patterns of the 11p15 secreted mucins, MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6, and the membrane-bound mucin MUC4 in proliferative and secretory normal endometrium, simple and complex hyperplasia, and endometrial adenocarcinoma. A total of 98 samples, 19 of normal endometrium (11 proliferative and 8 secretor), 44 of endometrial hyperplasia (23 simple, 21 complex), and 35 of endometrial endometrioid adenocarcinomas were analyzed by immunohistochemical techniques using specific antimucin antibodies.

The article describes the contrastive possibilities of alignment of high accents in three Romance varieties, namely, Central Catalan, Neapolitan Italian, and Pisa Italian. The Romance languages analyzed in this article provide crucial evidence that small differences in alignment in rising accents should be encoded phonologically. To account for such facts within the AM model, the article develops the notion of "phonological anchoring" as an extension of the concept of secondary association originally proposed by Pierrehumbert and Beckman (1988), and later adopted by Grice (1995), Grice, Ladd, and Arvaniti (2000), and others to explain the behavior of edge tones.

Treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) requires a long period of chemotherapy (9 months), which makes treatment-compliance extremely difficult. Current knowledge of latent bacilli and of the lesions with which they are associated suggests that these bacilli survive in granulomas with a central necrotic core and an outermost layer of foamy macrophages (FM) that represent an important immunosuppressive barrier. The presence of FM, which is especially strong in mice, explains not only the kinetics of the drainage of dead bacilli, debris and surfactant, but also how latent bacilli can escape from the granuloma and re-grow in the periphery, particularly in the alveolar spaces where they can disseminate easily.

Low dose aerosol infection of C57BL/6 mice with a clinical strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (UTE 0335 R) induced intragranulomatous necrosis in pulmonary granulomas (INPG) at week 9 postinfection. Infection of different knockout (KO) mouse strains with UTE 0335 R induced INPG in all strains and established two histopathological patterns. The first pattern was seen in SCID mice and in mice with deleted alpha/beta T receptor, TNF R1, IL-12, IFN-gamma, or iNOS genes, and showed a massive INPG with a high granulomatous infiltration of the lung, a large and homogeneous eosinophilic necrosis full of acid-fast bacilli, with marked karyorrhexis, coarse basophilic necrosis, and surrounded by patches delimited by partially conserved alveolar septum full of PMNs.
