Objective: To describe the trends in numbers of midwives and midwifery-attended births and the characteristics of women who used midwifery health care services in Manitoba from 2001-2002 to 2009-2010.

Methods: We conducted a quantitative descriptive analysis using population-based, de-identified administrative data from the Population Health Research Data Repository at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy in Winnipeg, Manitoba to study the use of midwifery care. Trends in the numbers of practising and non-practising midwives were based on data from the College of Midwives of Manitoba registries and its annual reports.

We investigated the effects of a high-fructose (HF) diet on cardiovascular risks in Sprague-Dawley rats. Twelve rats were randomly assigned to standard chow or HF diet for 20 weeks. Systolic blood pressure and circulating insulin, total cholesterol, and triacylglycerol levels were significantly higher in the HF group.

The association of ADP-ribosylation with cell proliferation and ischemia-reperfusion injury suggests that it may be a suitable target for therapeutic control of revascularization-induced injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the inhibitory actions of ADP-ribosylation inhibitors on restenosis. In organ culture, the poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor 3,4-dihydro-5-methylisoquinolinone (PD128763) was unable to prevent neointimal hyperplasia, whereas the arginine-dependent mono(ADP-ribosyl)transferase (ART) inhibitor meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) was highly effective (EC(50) 21 microM).

Dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and the antihypertensive drug, telmisartan, have both been shown to modify cardiovascular risks. The effects of a combination of these two agents have, however, not been investigated. This 20 week study sought to assess the therapeutic potential of a CLA/telmisartan co-administration in rats fed a high-fructose high-fat diet.

Peripartum hysterectomy: 10-year experience in two manitoba tertiary centers.

Ann Saudi Med

October 2012

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, University of Manitoba and St. Boniface General Hospital, Winnipeg, Canada.

Background: The aim of the study was to review the incidence, associated risk factors, indications and complications of peripartum hysterectomy in the two teaching hospitals of the University of Manitoba, Canada.

Patients And Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of all cases of peripartum hysterectomy that occurred over a 10-year period at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC), and over a five-year period at St. Boniface General Hospital (SBGH), the two tertiary centers in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Recent conceptual work on multiple proxy perspectives indicates that clinicians should be more reflective in terms of how they question or prompt informal caregivers to report on patient illness experiences. There are different ways in which therapeutic questions might be posed that can influence perceptual agreement between patients and caregivers. The purpose of this randomized, between-subjects study was to test the hypothesis that "The interrater gap between patient self-assessment and caregiver assessment on patient multidimensional symptom experiences will be reduced when caregivers are prompted to imagine-patient perspective-take.

Technetium-99m sestamibi imaging for parathyroid adenoma localization has been performed using both dual-tracer subtraction and double-phase single-tracer washout techniques. The relative accuracy of these two techniques is uncertain. We have developed a modified imaging technique which combines both approaches and have directly compared them in a series of patients with surgically explored hyperparathyroidism.

A chronically elevated lipase is a rare biochemical finding and has only previously been described in patients with malignancy and macrolipasemia. We report a case of chronic hyperlipasemia caused by sarcoidosis. The literature on pancreatic sarcoidosis is reviewed and the significance of lipase isoforms is discussed.

Mechanisms of beneficial effects of probucol in adriamycin cardiomyopathy.

Mol Cell Biochem

June 1999

Department of Physiology and St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada.

Probucol, a lipid-lowering drug, has been shown to offer protection against adriamycin-induced cardiomyopathy. In order to define the mechanism of this protection, we examined changes in antioxidants and lipid peroxidation in hearts as well as lipids in hearts and plasma from rats treated with either adriamycin or adriamycin and probucol with appropriate controls. Any potential free radical quenching as well as growth inhibitory effects of probucol were also examined using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells in culture.

Subinhibitory antimicrobial concentrations: A review of in vitro and in vivo data.

July 1992

Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Manitoba; Health Sciences Centre, St Boniface General Hospital and St Boniface General Hospital Research Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Antimicrobial activity is not an 'all or none' effect. An increase in the rate and extent of antimicrobial action is usually observed over a wide range of antimicrobial concentrations. Subinhibitory antimicrobial concentrations are well known to produce significant antibacterial effects, and various antimicrobials at subinhibitory concentrations have been reported to inhibit the rate of bacterial growth.
