Background: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) may be underdiagnosed in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to difficulty expressing the symptoms in their own words. In addition, administration of oral iron may be particularly difficult in children with ASD.

Methods: This was a retrospective, open-label case series of children with ASD, restless legs (RL) symptoms, and serum ferritin <30 μg/L, who either had failed or did not tolerate oral iron, and were subsequently treated with intravenous (IV) ferric carboxymaltose (FCM).

Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, Illinois (Drs Baur and Wendler); and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield (Dr Smith). Dr Wendler is currently at Benedictine University, Lisle, Illinois.

Community-based programs deploying community health workers (CHWs) who collaborate with other entities are beginning to emerge as the US health system evolves. Although these programs have used various evaluation criteria to determine program success, little research has been completed to examine the experiences of program participants as they receive these services. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe what it was like to experience the benefit of improved care coordination through a community-based program featuring CHWs, in collaboration with community-based interprofessional providers.

We explore the influence of the Thirteenth Amendment to the US Constitution on the enforceability of personal services contracts for physicians. This influence extends from the ambiguous definition to the legal interpretation of personal services contracts. The courts have struggled with determining contracts to be a personal service and whether to grant injunctions for continued performance.

Purpose: More than a decade ago the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, American Board of Family Medicine, Association of Departments of Family Medicine, Association of Family Practice Residency Directors, North American Primary Care Research Group, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine came together in the Future of Family Medicine (FFM) to launch a series of strategic efforts to "renew the specialty to meet the needs of people and society," some of which bore important fruit. Family Medicine for America's Health was launched in 2013 to revisit the role of family medicine in view of these changes and to position family medicine with new strategic and communication plans to create better health, better health care, and lower cost for patients and communities (the Triple Aim).

Methods: Family Medicine for America's Health was preceded and guided by the development of a family physician role definition.

A model of ECT seizure induction by rapid kindling is described. The electrical stimulus as a series of pulses progressively disrupts neuronal cell membranes, with corresponding progressive increases in intracellular concentrations of sodium, calcium, and voltage. Eventually, the intracellular voltage rises to trigger neuronal firing in waves from seizure foci.

Background: Discovery of leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptors 5 and 6 (LGR5 and LGR6) as markers of adult epithelial stem cells of the skin and intestine permits researchers to draw on the intrinsic cellular fundamentals of wound healing and proliferation dynamics of epithelial surfaces. In this study, the authors use the intestine-derived human alpha defensin 5 to stimulate epithelial proliferation, bacterial reduction, and hair production in burn wound beds to provide the field with initial insight on augmenting wound healing in tissues devoid of adnexal stem cells.

Methods: Murine third-degree burn wound beds were treated with (1) intestine-derived human alpha defensin 5, (2) skin-derived human beta defensin 1, and (3) sulfadiazine to determine their roles in wound healing, bacterial reduction, and hair growth.

Purpose: We report the first multicenter randomized blinded trial of the prostatic urethral lift for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Materials And Methods: Men at least 50 years old with AUASI (American Urological Association Symptom Index) 13 or greater, a maximum flow rate 12 ml per second or less and a prostate 30 to 80 cc were randomized 2:1 between prostatic urethral lift and sham. In the prostatic urethral lift group small permanent implants are placed within the prostate to retract encroaching lobes and open the prostatic urethra.

BAFF/APRIL system in pediatric OMS: relation to severity, neuroinflammation, and immunotherapy.

J Neuroinflammation

January 2013

Department of Neurology, National Pediatric Myoclonus Center and Neuroimmunology Laboratory, and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, PO Box 19643, Springfield, IL 62794-9643, USA.

Background: B-cell dysregulation has been implicated but not fully characterized in pediatric opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS), a neuroblastoma-associated neuroinflammatory disorder.

Objective: To assess the role of B-cell activating factor (BAFF) and a proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL), two critical B cell-modulating cytokines, as potential biomarkers of disease activity and treatment biomarkers in OMS.

Methods: Soluble BAFF and APRIL were measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum by ELISA in 433 children (296 OMS, 109 controls, 28 other inflammatory neurological disorders (OIND)).
