In 1822, France's Ministry of the Interior, concerned about dropping vaccination rates among the population, commissioned the French artist Constant Joseph Desbordes (1761-1828) to create an artwork that would educate the public about the benefits of the smallpox vaccine. The Painting that resulted is entitled: "La Vaccine" ("The Cowpox Inoculation") and a copy of it is entitled "La Vaccine au Chateau de Liancourt" ("Performing the Vaccination against Smallpox in the Chateau of Liancourt"). The highlight of the painting is its central figure, one of France's most distinguished physicians, Jean-Louis Alibert (1768-1837) performing, in dramatic fashion, the arm to arm method of smallpox vaccination that was common at that time.

Indeterminate melanocytic proliferations of the conjunctiva have both benign and malignant features that previously made these lesions nearly impossible to categorize in existing classification schemes. With the evolution of immunohistochemistry and molecular genetics, however, subclassifications have emerged that allow for a more tailored diagnosis and management. These conjunctival melanocytic proliferations include deep penetrating nevus, granular cell nevus, and nevoid melanoma.

Anti-obesity medications used with lifestyle intervention produce greater and more sustained weight loss than does lifestyle intervention alone. However, until 2021, FDA-approved medications for the long-term treatment of obesity in the general adult population had not demonstrated the sustained loss of 15% body weight needed to meet or exceed all guideline-recommended targets for weight-related complications. To meet this need, investigators launched the Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with obesity (STEP) program of phase 3 clinical trials to assess the safety and efficacy of a weekly 2.

Impact of Early Feeding: Metagenomics Analysis of the Infant Gut Microbiome.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

April 2022

Biomedical Research Department, Nemours Children's Health, Wilmington, DE, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Different feeding methods in infancy—breastfeeding (BF) vs. formula feeding (FF)—significantly alter the gut microbiome, impacting metabolism and immune function.
  • Next generation sequencing was used to analyze fecal samples from BF and FF infants, revealing 39 differentially represented microbial genera and over 1,700 genes with varied abundance between the two groups.
  • The results show that BF infants have a richer presence of beneficial gut bacteria and distinct functional pathways, suggesting breastfeeding may contribute to better gut health.

Diverse perspectives are critical components of effective teams in every industry. Underrepresentation of minorities in medicine leads to worse outcomes for minority patients, and efforts to increase diversity in the health care workforce are critical. Presently, about 70% of the pediatric surgery workforce is white, and pediatric surgeons at large do not reflect the racial or ethnic diversity of the populations they serve.

Article Synopsis
  • Management of unresectable pediatric hepatoblastoma (HB) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is complex, and this study analyzed survival outcomes using data from the Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation (SPLIT) database across 16 centers.
  • The three-year event-free survival (EFS) rates were significantly higher for HB at 81% compared to 62% for HCC, with findings showing that tumor extent did not affect survival rates.
  • Key risk factors for poorer outcomes in HCC included older age and larger tumors, alongside increased risks of infection and renal injury in malignant liver transplantation, highlighting the necessity for careful patient selection for transplantation.
