Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred access for hemodialysis in patients with end-stage renal disease, and arteriovenous grafts are used when AVF creation is not feasible. Post renal transplantation, hemodialysis may be needed due to delayed graft function or transplantation failure. This review aimed to summarize current evidence on the impact of maintaining versus ligating AV access on renal function and cardiovascular outcomes post transplantation.

Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients often develop brain metastases (BMs), complicating management. We have shown that increasing frailty is associated with decreased overall survival (OS) and central nervous system progression free survival (PFS) for patients undergoing stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) to BMs. Leveraging the International Radiosurgery Research Foundation, we sought to expand upon these findings, in NSCLC specifically.

Objective: Infections during pregnancy can increase the risk of congenital hearing loss. This population-based study investigated the effect of birthing parent COVID-19 infection during pregnancy on risk of congenital hearing loss in infants.
Methods: Records of infants born in 2022 were reviewed via a retrospective clinical audit of a universal state-wide newborn hearing screening program in Victoria, Australia.

Background: Families are often unsure how best to prepare dependent children for the death of a significant caregiver with a poor cancer prognosis and seek guidance and support from health care teams. Health and social care professionals (hereafter referred to as professionals) often lack educational opportunities to gain the desired knowledge, skills, and confidence to provide family-centered supportive cancer care. e-Learning has positively impacted access and reach, improving educational opportunities in health care.

RNA medicines have become a promising platform for therapeutic use in recent years. Understanding the immunomodulatory effects of novel mRNA-lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) is crucial for future therapeutic development. An in vitro whole blood assay was developed to assess the impact of mRNA-LNPs on immune cell function, cytokine release, and complement activation.

Healthcare delivery and access, both in the United States and globally, were negatively affected during the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was particularly true during the first year when countries grappled with high rates of illness and implemented non-pharmaceutical interventions such as stay-at-home orders. Among children with special healthcare needs, research from the United Kingdom (U.

Instrumental variables (IVs) methods have recently gained popularity since, under certain assumptions, they may yield consistent causal effect estimators in the presence of unmeasured confounding. Existing simulation studies that evaluate the performance of IV approaches for time-to-event outcomes tend to consider either an additive or a multiplicative data-generating mechanism (DGM) and have been limited to an exponential constant baseline hazard model. In particular, the relative merits of additive versus multiplicative IV models have not been fully explored.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic 4 years ago, viral sequencing continues to document numerous individual mutations in the viral spike protein across many variants. To determine the ability of vaccine-mediated humoral immunity to combat continued SARS-CoV-2 evolution, we construct a comprehensive panel of pseudoviruses harboring each individual mutation spanning 4 years of the pandemic to understand the fitness cost and resistance benefits of each. These efforts identify numerous mutations that escape from vaccine-induced humoral immunity.

Background: Healthcare organisations face widespread challenges in optimising their safety culture, especially amid conflicting stakeholder needs, staffing shortages and increasing acuity of patients. McMaster University Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit developed a safety culture programme that prioritises the needs of patients, hospital staff and learners altogether.
Methods: The safety culture programme and activities revolve around six primary drivers: psychological safety, provider well-being, equity, diversity and inclusion, teamwork and communication, organisational learning and leadership.

Energy plays an integral role in New Yorkers' lives. It powers the economy, moves people and goods, keeps homes and workplaces at a livable temperature, and runs critical infrastructure that keeps people healthy and safe. Reliable energy systems are easy to take for granted, but many aspects of these systems are vulnerable to weather and climate hazards.

Developmental neuronal remodeling is extensive and mechanistically diverse across the nervous system. We sought to identify Drosophila pupal neurons that underwent mechanistically new types of neuronal remodeling and describe remodeling Beat-VaM and Beat-VaL neurons. We show that Beat-VaM neurons produce highly branched neurites in the CNS during larval stages that undergo extensive local pruning.

The pro-degenerative NAD hydrolase dSarm/SARM1 can act as a metabolic sensor by detecting pathological changes in NAD /NMN and subsequently induce catastrophic axon degeneration. Here we show with-no-lysine kinase (dWnk), which can directly sense Cl , K and osmotic pressure, is required for neurodegeneration induced by depletion of the NAD biosynthetic enzyme dNmnat.

Ecosystem management requires an integrated understanding of ecological interactions. In the Gulf of Maine (GoM), trophic information pertaining to commercially important groundfishes and nearshore prey communities is lacking. We characterized nearshore communities and groundfish diets using data collected from nearshore surveys (864 bottom trawls and 3638 stomach samples of six groundfish species) conducted biannually (spring and fall) in Midcoast Maine and Penobscot Bay from 2012 to 2022.

Chordomas are rare, locally aggressive tumors that have a high rate of recurrence, especially at the skull base. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze the efficacy and safety of proton beam therapy (PBT) and carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) for skull base chordoma. We conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Ovid up to November 26, 2023, following the PRISMA statement.

Background: Spetzler-Martin (SM) Grade III brain arteriovenous malformations (BAVMs) represent a transitional risk zone between low- and high-grade BAVMs, characterized by diverse angioarchitecture. The primary treatment options are endovascular embolization, microsurgical resection (MS), and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). This study compares the efficacy and outcomes of MS and SRS.

Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor in adults. Typically treated with initial surgical resection, and chemoradiotherapy, despite current treatments, patients typically survive only 12-14 months, necessitating new therapeutic approaches. Our meta-analysis evaluates combining antiangiogenic medications with chemoradiotherapy versus using chemoradiotherapy alone in treating newly diagnosed GBM.
