Introduction: We report a single-center experience of resection and reconstruction of the heart and aorta infiltrated by lung cancer in order to prove that involvement of these structures is no longer a condition precluding surgery.
Methods: Twenty-seven patients underwent surgery for lung cancer presenting full-thickness infiltration of the heart (n = 6) or the aorta (n = 18) and/or the supra-aortic branches (subclavian n = 3). Cardiac reconstruction was performed in 6 patients (5 atrium, 1 ventricle), with (n = 4) or without (n = 2) cardiopulmonary bypass, using a patch prosthesis (n = 4) or with deep clamping and direct suture (n = 2).

Aims: Patients with cardiomyopathies and channelopathies are usually younger and have a predominantly arrhythmia-related prognosis; they have nearly normal life expectancy thanks to the protection against sudden cardiac death provided by the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) is an effective alternative to the transvenous ICD and has evolved over the years. This study aimed to evaluate the rate of inappropriate shocks (IS), appropriate therapies, and device-related complications in patients with cardiomyopathies and channelopathies who underwent modern S-ICD implantation.

Uterine arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are an abnormal presence of shunts between myometrial arteries and veins within the myometrium that usually occurs after a traumatic event on the uterus and it is often diagnosed after a miscarriage. In this case report, we propone the case of a woman, gravida 3 para 2, admitted at the emergency department presenting deep vaginal bleeding and suspicion of incomplete miscarriage at 11 weeks of pregnancy. The suspect of AVM was made with noninvasive procedure; transvaginal ultrasound examination with the advantage of color Doppler showed a myometrial hypervascular lesion of the posterior wall.

The persistence of low human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication in individuals undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) still threatens their health. Previous findings have shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) could interfere with several steps of the viral life cycle. Herein, we set out to investigate the expression of miR-150, miR-223, miR-382, miR-324-5p, miR-33a-5p, miR-34a, and miR-132 in the whole peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) population from people living with HIV-1 showing different levels of viral suppression.

Objective: To assess differences in the distribution of type and number of D'Amico high-risk criteria (DHRCs) according to race/ethnicity (R/E) and their effect on cancer-specific mortality (CSM) in prostate cancer (PCa) patients treated with external beam radiotherapy (RT).
Methods: In the SEER database (2004-2016), we identified 31,002 PCa patients treated with RT with at least one DHRCs, namely PSA >20 ng/dL, biopsy Gleason Grade Group 4-5, and clinical T stage ≥T2c. Competing risks regression (CRR) model tested the association between DHRCs and 5-year CSM in all R/E subgroups.

BCG is the most efficient adjuvant therapy for high-risk, non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Both innate and adaptive immune responses have been implicated in BCG-mediated effects. BCG vaccination can boost innate immune responses via trained immunity (TI), resulting in an increased resistance to respiratory viral infections.

Unlabelled: Aging and chronic heart failure (CHF) are responsible for the temporal inhomogeneity of the electrocardiogram (ECG) repolarization phase. Recently, some short period repolarization-dispersion parameters have been proposed as markers of acute decompensation and of mortality risk in CHF patients. Some important differences in repolarization between sexes are known, but their impact on ECG markers remains unstudied.

This review focuses on the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract (GI MRI), analyzing the major technical advances achieved in this field, such as diffusion-weighted imaging, molecular imaging, motility studies, and artificial intelligence. Today, MRI performed with the more advanced imaging techniques allows accurate assessment of many bowel diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel disease and rectal cancer; in most of these diseases, MRI is invaluable for diagnosis, staging, and disease monitoring under treatment. Several MRI parameters are currently considered activity biomarkers for inflammation and neoplastic disease.

Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain tumor with an average life expectancy between 14 and 16 months after diagnosis. The Ki-67 labeling index (LI), a measure of cellular proliferation, is emerging as a prognostic marker in GBM. In this study, we investigated the ultrastructure of glioblastoma tissue from 9 patients with the same molecular profile (adult IDH wild-type glioblastoma, wild-type ATRX, and positive for TP53 expression, GFAP expression, and EGFR overexpression) to find possible ultrastructural features to be used as biomarkers and correlated with the only parameter that differs among our samples, the Ki-67 LI.

Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) constitutes a rare and aggressive entity accounting for 5% to 10% of all urothelial tumors. The importance of stratification and disparities according to ethnicity and age has never been tested in a sufficiently large sample of patients with metastatic UTUC (mUTUC). We conducted this study to address this void, and we hypothesized that the distribution of metastases may vary according to age and ethnicity.

Background: Although antioxidants are largely used in subfertile men with oligo-astheno-teratozoospermia (OAT), the choice among different molecules is challenged by the lack of comparative head-to-head studies. The network meta-analysis (NMA) can overcome limitations of pairwise meta-analyses, since it incorporates direct and indirect evidence into a single model generating an effectiveness hierarchy.
Objective: To assess with a NMA the effects of antioxidants in improving seminal parameters in idiopathic OAT.

There is an immediate need to optimize cardiovascular (CV) risk management and primary prevention of childhood obesity to timely and more effectively combat the health hazard and socioeconomic burden of CV disease from childhood development to adulthood manifestation. Optimizing screening programs and risk management strategies for obesity-related CV risk in childhood has high potential to change disease trajectories into adulthood. Building on a holistic view on the aetiology of childhood obesity, this document reviews current concepts in primary prevention and risk management strategies by lifestyle interventions.
