Article Synopsis
  • A systematic study evaluated 5 ALF studies (343 patients) and 20 ACLF studies (5,705 patients), finding that PE significantly increased 30-day and overall survival rates compared to standard medical therapy (SMT) in ALF patients, and also improved 30-day and 90-day survival in ACLF patients.
  • The study suggests that PE may be a valuable treatment option for ALF patients and possibly beneficial for ACLF patients, calling for more randomized trials to clarify its effectiveness in ACLF cases specifically.

Patients with pancreatic cancer commonly develop weight loss and muscle wasting. Whether adipose tissue and skeletal muscle losses begin before diagnosis and the potential utility of such losses for earlier cancer detection are not well understood. We quantify skeletal muscle and adipose tissue areas from computed tomography (CT) imaging obtained 2 months to 5 years before cancer diagnosis in 714 pancreatic cancer cases and 1748 matched controls.

Previous studies have hypothesized that autozygosity is decreasing over generational time. However, these studies were limited to relatively small samples (n < 11,000) lacking in diversity, which may limit the generalizability of their findings. We present data that partially support this hypothesis from three large cohorts of diverse ancestries, two from the US (All of Us, n = 82,474; the Million Veteran Program, n = 622,497) and one from the UK (UK Biobank, n = 380,899).

Global burden of gastric cancer: epidemiological trends, risk factors, screening and prevention.

Nat Rev Clin Oncol

May 2023

Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, USA.

Gastric cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The temporal trends for this malignancy, however, are dynamic, and reports from the past decade indicate important declines in some regions and demographic groups, as well as a few notable exceptions in which gastric cancer rates are either stable or increasing. Two main anatomical subtypes of gastric cancer exist, non-cardia and cardia, with different temporal trends and risk factors (such as obesity and reflux for cardia gastric cancer and Helicobacter pylori infection for non-cardia gastric cancer).
