Clinical phenotypes of heart failure patients with supranormal ejection fraction.

ESC Heart Fail

December 2024

Heart Failure Center, State Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease, Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College (CAMS and PUMC), Beijing, China.

Aims: Heart failure (HF) with supranormal ejection fraction (HFsnEF) represents a distinct clinical entity characterized by limited treatment options and an unfavourable prognosis. Revealing its phenotypic diversity is crucial for understanding disease mechanism and optimizing patient management. We aim to identify phenotypic subgroups in HFsnEF using unsupervised clustering analysis.

This study aimed to develop and validate prognostic nomograms that can estimate the probability of 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS) as well as cancer-specific survival (CSS) for Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICCA) patients. Clinical data of 1446 patients diagnosed with ICCA between 2010 and 2017 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were analyzed. In both the OS and the CSS group, the training cohort and validation cohort were divided into a 7:3 ratio.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is often diagnosed at an unresectable stage without opportunities for curative therapy. Future liver remnant (FLR) insufficiency limits the range of patients who can undergo radical resection. Associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) can ultimately achieve short-term hypertrophy of the FLR in patients with viral hepatitis-related fibrosis/cirrhosis and R0 resection.

Colloidal Self-Assembled Patterns Maintain the Pluripotency and Promote the Hemopoietic Potential of Human Embryonic Stem Cells.

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Biomimetic Materials and Cellular Immunomodulation, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen, China.

The generation of blood cells in a significant amount for clinical uses is still challenging. Human pluripotent stem cells-derived hemopoietic cells (hPSC-HCs) are a promising cell source to generate blood cells. Previously, it has been shown that the attached substrates are crucial in the maintenance or differentiation of hPSCs.

The relation between selenium overexposure and increased risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been subject to considerable interest. Epidemiologic studies have reported suggestive associations between selenium and ALS, although the causal inference between selenium and ALS remains to be established. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to analyze the causal role of selenium on ALS risk.

Human cerebral organoid (CO) is a three-dimensional (3D) cell culture system that recapitulates the developing human brain. While CO has proved an invaluable tool for studying neurological disorders in a more clinically relevant matter, there have still been several shortcomings including CO variability and reproducibility as well as lack of or underrepresentation of certain cell types typically found in the brain. As the technology to generate COs has continued to improve, more efficient and streamlined protocols have addressed some of these issues.

DNA methylation biomarkers for diagnosis of primary liver cancer and distinguishing hepatocellular carcinoma from intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Aging (Albany NY)

July 2021

Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Tianjin First Central Hospital, School of Medicine, Nankai University, Tianjin, China.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) are the two most common pathology subtypes of primary liver cancer (PLC). Identifying DNA methylation biomarkers for diagnosis of PLC and further distinguishing HCC from ICC plays a vital role in subsequent treatment options selection. To obtain potential diagnostic DNA methylation sites for PLC, differentially methylated CpG (DMC) sites were first screened by comparing the methylation data between normal liver samples and PLC samples (ICC samples and HCC samples).

Hyperlipidemia is a chronic disorder that is difficult to cure and usually treated with long-term lipid-reducing drugs. Recent trends have led to the use of diet therapies or food-derived strategies in the treatment of such long-term diseases. The Chinese rice wine (huangjiu) contains a wide range of bioactive peptides that are produced during the multi-species fermentation process.

Phenethyl isothiocyanate is widely present in cruciferous vegetables with multiple biological effects. Here we reported the antiatherogenic effects and the underlying mechanisms of JC-5411 (Phenethyl isothiocyanate formulation) and . Luciferase reporter assay showed that JC-5411 increased the activity of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and antioxidant response element (ARE).

Although KIAA0101 is involved in many diseases, its expression and prognostic value in HCC remain undefined. According to CCLE, KIAA0101 is highly expressed in HCC, with a weak positive correlation between copy number and gene expression. Four studies involving 760 samples in ONCOMINE report elevated KIAA0101 expression in HCC (p=3.

Application of plasma circulating cell-free DNA detection to the molecular diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Am J Transl Res

March 2019

Institute of Infectious Diseases, Beijing Ditan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases Beijing 100015, China.

Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) carries genetic information consistent with tumor cells and has potential value for molecular diagnosis of tumors. The present study analysed the gene mutations of plasma circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and tumor tissue DNA in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and explored the clinical application value of plasma cfDNA as a tumor marker in HCC molecular diagnosis. Samples from 29 patients with primary HCC were collected.

Targeting Mechanosensitive Transcription Factors in Atherosclerosis.

Trends Pharmacol Sci

April 2019

Aab Cardiovascular Research Institute, Department of Medicine, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Atherosclerosis is the primary underlying cause of cardiovascular disease which preferentially develops at arterial regions exposed to disturbed flow (DF), but much less at regions of unidirectional laminar flow (UF). Recent studies have demonstrated that DF and UF differentially regulate important aspects of endothelial function, such as vascular inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular tone, cell proliferation, senescence, mitochondrial function, and glucose metabolism. DF and UF regulate vascular pathophysiology via differential regulation of mechanosensitive transcription factors (MSTFs) (KLF2, KLF4, NRF2, YAP/TAZ/TEAD, HIF-1α, NF-κB, AP-1, and others).

Background: To observe the effects of different treatments of lymph after intestinal I/R in rats on macrophages in vitro.

Methods: Forty-eight healthy SPF SD rats weighing 300 ± 20 g, were randomly divided into two groups: group A, and group B. The rats in group A were drained of lymph fluid for 180 min; the rats in group B were subjected to 60 min ischemia by clamping the SMA, followed by 120 min reperfusion and 180 min of lymph drainage.

Several studies have reported that hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection may decrease the risk of stroke. However, its association is controversial. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and the risk of stroke.
