The neuromodulators serotonin, acetylcholine, and dopamine have been proposed to play important roles in the execution of movement, control of several forms of attentional behavior, and reinforcement learning. While the response pattern of midbrain dopaminergic neurons and its specific role in reinforcement learning have been revealed, the roles of the other neuromodulators remain elusive. Reportedly, neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus, one major source of serotonin, continually track the state of expectation of future rewards by showing a correlated response to the start of a behavioral task, reward cue presentation, and reward delivery.

We developed a statistical method for detecting discontinuous phase changes (phase shifts) in fluctuating alpha rhythms in the human brain from electroencephalogram (EEG) data obtained in a single trial. This method uses the state space models and the line process technique, which is a Bayesian method for detecting discontinuity in an image. By applying this method to simulated data, we were able to detect the phase and amplitude shifts in a single simulated trial.

To gain insight into the possible origin of a new reassortant influenza A virus between pandemic (H1N1) 2009 and endemic swine viruses that has jumped the species barrier and caused a few infections among humans in Indiana and Pennsylvania recently, we analyzed all full genome sequences related to this virus and report its evolutionary history, but failed to determine how the virus had emerged simultaneously in two geographically distinct areas.

Currently, successful treatment of chronic total occlusion (CTO) seems markedly improved, due to several new techniques and dedicated device developments. However, this improved success rate is often limited to procedures performed by skilled, highly experienced operators. The transfection of human cells with siRNA against adapter-related protein complex 2 alpha 1 subunit (AP2alpha) was revealed to significantly up-regulate the replication of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). This effect was confirmed by cell infection with vesicular stomatitis virus G protein-pseudotyped HIV-1 as well as CXCR4-tropic and CCR5-tropic HIV-1. Viral adsorption, viral entry and reverse transcription processes were not affected by cell transfection with siRNA against AP2alpha.

The renoprotective potential of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) agonist pioglitazone was explored in an immune model of progressive nephropathy, passive Heymann nephritis (PHN), compared with that of an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, taken as standard therapy for renoprotection. PHN rats received orally vehicle, pioglitazone (10 mg/kg twice daily), or candesartan (1 mg/kg twice daily) from months 2 to 8. Pioglitazone reduced proteinuria as effectively as candesartan and limited renal functional and structural changes.

Adipocytes have recently been shown to secrete a variety of bioactive substances called 'adipocytokines', and have been recognized as endocrine cells. Tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alphaalpha, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and heparin-binding epidermal-growth-factor-like growth factor (HBEGF) are among these adipocytokines, and they contribute to the development of vascular diseases. Visfatin is a visceral fat-specific protein that may be related to the development of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

A novel tricyclic metabolite, brasilicardin A (1), with potent immunosuppressive activity has been isolated from the cultured broth of the actinomycete Nocardia brasiliensis IFM 0406, and the structure including absolute stereochemistry was established on the basis of spectroscopic data, chemical means, and X-ray analysis. Brasilicardin A (1) is the first tricyclic compound consisting of an anti/syn/anti-perhydrophenanthrene skeleton with a rhamnose, an N-acetylglucosamine, and an amino acid moiety.

STAT-induced STAT inhibitor-1 (SSI-1), also referred to as suppressor of cytokine signaling-1 and JAK-binding protein, is a member of a new family, the members of which are negative regulators of cytokine signals. SSI-1 is induced by various cytokines; however, the transcriptional mechanism of the SSI-1 gene is not fully understood. Here, we showed that transcription of the mouse SSI-1 gene was initiated from six adjoining sites accompanying three GC boxes and a single GC box-like element near them, but not from the TATA box or an initiator sequence.

There are no published data of manometric studies of pyloric motor function in patients with infantile hypertropic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). The present study attempted to examine the characteristics of motor abnormality of the pylorus in five children with IHPS. Using a transducer-built-in manometric catheter cannulated through the pylorus under fluoroscopy, the pressure in the pyloric canal was recorded continuously over 3 h during fasting.

The objective was to develop a computer software package (to be registered as InPest) that runs under Microsoft Excel on a personal computer to help in the risk assessment of indoor-use pesticides for both applicators and indoor occupants for various methods of application including space spraying, electric vaporizing, broadcast spraying, and residual spraying. For space spraying, the movement of the pesticide in a sprayed room including droplet settlement, permeation into the floor, degradation, transference, and discharge by ventilation were described as precisely as possible by various physicochemi-cal equations.
