Objective: Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy R9 (LGMDR9, formerly known as LGMD2I), caused by variants in the fukutin-related protein (FKRP) gene leads to progressive muscle weakness of the shoulder and pelvic limb-girdles and loss of motor function over time. Clinical management and future trial design are improved by determining which standardized clinical outcome assessments (COA) of function are most appropriate to capture disease presentation and progression, informing endpoint selection and enrollment criteria. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the cross-sectional validity and reliability of clinical outcome assessments in patients with FKRP-related LGMDR9 participating in the Genetic Resolution and Assessments Solving Phenotypes in LGMD (GRASP) natural history study.

We investigated associations between 'healthy dietary pattern' scores, at ages 36, 43, 53 and 60-64 years, and body composition at age 60-64 years among participants from the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD). Principal component analyses of dietary data (food diaries) at age 60-64 years were used to calculate diet scores (healthy dietary pattern scores) at each age. Higher scores indicated healthier diets (higher consumption of fruit, vegetables and wholegrain bread).

This narrative review seeks to summarize chemotherapeutic regimens commonly used for patients with newly diagnosed Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome-negative B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) in the frontline setting and to describe the latest clinical research using the bispecific T-cell-engaging immunotherapy blinatumomab in the first-line treatment setting. Current standard-of-care chemotherapeutic backbones for newly diagnosed Ph-negative BCP-ALL are based on the same overarching treatment principle: to reduce disease burden to undetectable levels and maintain lasting remission. The adult treatment landscape has progressively evolved following the adoption of pediatric-inspired regimens.

Vitamin D prophylaxis in persons with epilepsy?

Epilepsia

September 2024

Department of Development and Regeneration, Section Pediatric Neurology, University Hospital KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Limited guidelines exist regarding osteoporosis prevention in the general population. Despite being a subject of controversy, the majority of research suggests that decreased vitamin D levels correlate with increased bone turnover, that is, an important risk factor for osteoporosis development. In most guidelines, daily vitamin D supplementation is recommended.

Nutrition in the prevention and treatment of skeletal muscle ageing and sarcopenia: a single nutrient, a whole food and a whole diet approach.

Proc Nutr Soc

October 2024

AGE Research Group, Translational and Clinical Research Institute, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

Loss of skeletal muscle strength and mass (sarcopenia) is common in older adults and associated with an increased risk of disability, frailty and premature death. Finding cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies for sarcopenia for the growing ageing population is therefore of great public health interest. Although nutrition is considered an important factor in the aetiology of sarcopenia, its potential for sarcopenia prevention and/or treatment is still being evaluated.

Most people with a stoma worry about leakage, and a quarter experience leakage of stomal effluent outside the baseplate on a monthly basis. Leakage has additional physical and psychosocial consequences, for instance, peristomal skin complications, feeling unable to cope, and self-isolation. An interventional, single-arm, multi-centre study was undertaken in the United Kingdom to evaluate a novel digital leakage notification system for ostomy care, including a support service (=test product) for 12 weeks in patients with a recent stoma formation (≤9 months).
