Unlabelled: Geographic distribution patterns of board certified behavior analysts may be useful in analyzing the growth of the field. First, we present an international snapshot of Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) certificants, then analyze relative growth rates between countries from 1999 to 2019. This is followed by an in depth review of certificant distribution patterns in the United States and Canada, as well as the ratios of experienced behavior analysts to new certificants.

ABA may be uniquely positioned to have broader impacts with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) client populations, not only due to its growth and increased social acceptability, but also because a segment of the field practices within the education system. Decades of misinformation have potentially reduced the widespread reliance on learning pedagogies derived from behavior analytic research. Disseminating ABA technologies depends on an advocacy-based approach to close gaps from research-to-practice.

This article describes the use of statistical significance tests and distance-based effect sizes with behavioral data from single case experimental designs (SCEDs). Such data often are interpreted only with visual analysis. However, a growing movement in the field is to quantify results to improve decision-making and communication across studies and sciences.

The double-stranded RNA sensor kinase PKR is one of four integrated stress response (ISR) sensor kinases that phosphorylate the α subunit of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2α) in response to stress. The current model of PKR activation considers the formation of back-to-back PKR dimers as a prerequisite for signal propagation. Here we show that PKR signaling involves the assembly of dynamic PKR clusters.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created massive demand for widespread, distributed tools for detecting SARS-CoV-2 genetic material. The hurdles to scalable testing include reagent and instrument accessibility, availability of highly trained personnel, and large upfront investment. Here, we showcase an orthogonal pipeline we call CREST (Cas13-based, rugged, equitable, scalable testing) that addresses some of these hurdles.

Management of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic requires widespread testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A main limitation for widespread SARS-CoV-2 testing is the global shortage of essential supplies, among them RNA extraction kits. The need for commercial RNA extraction kits places a bottleneck on tests that detect SARS-CoV-2 genetic material, including PCR-based reference tests.

Objective: Preoperative expectations affect patient outcomes in many health conditions, but expectations are rarely assessed in adult cochlear implant (CI) users. This study is a first step in assessing the contribution of preoperative expectations to postoperative CI outcomes, including speech recognition, CI quality of life (CIQOL), and CI satisfaction.
Study Design: Cross-sectional study.

Importance: Otolaryngology residency programs currently lack rigorous methods for assessing surgical skill and often rely on biased tools of evaluation.
Objectives: To evaluate which techniques used in mastoidectomy can serve as indicators of surgeon level (defined as the level of training) and whether these determinations of technique can be made based solely on the movement of the drill head or suction.
Design, Setting, And Participants: In this prospective, observational study conducted from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2019, at a single tertiary care institution, 3 independent observers made blinded evaluations on 24 intraoperative recordings of surgeons (6 junior residents, 4 senior residents, and 2 attending surgeons) performing mastoidectomies.

This pilot study examines the use of surgical instrument tracking and motion analysis in objectively measuring surgical performance. Accuracy of objective measures in distinguishing between surgeons of different levels was compared to that of subjective assessments. Twenty-four intraoperative video clips of mastoidectomies performed by junior residents (n = 12), senior residents (n = 8), and faculty (n = 4) were sent to otolaryngology programs via survey, yielding 708 subjective ratings of surgical experience level.

Translational frameshifting involves the repositioning of ribosomes on their messages into decoding frames that differ from those dictated during initiation. Some messenger RNAs (mRNAs) contain motifs that promote deliberate frameshifting to regulate production of the encoded proteins. The mechanisms of frameshifting have been investigated in many systems, and the resulting models generally involve single ribosomes responding to stimulator sequences in their engaged mRNAs.

Importance: Scar outcomes following cleft lip repair are an important component of pediatric patient and family satisfaction and indicate the need for future surgical interventions.
Objective: To assess the association of pediatric patient demographic factors and scar anatomic features with scar outcomes following cleft lip surgical repair.
Design, Setting, And Participants: A case-control study was conducted involving 58 pediatric patients who underwent surgical repair of a cleft lip from October 31, 2008, to August 4, 2016, at a tertiary care pediatric specialty hospital.
This article serves as a brief primer on planaria for behavior scientists. In the 1950s and 1960s, McConnell's planarian laboratory posited that conditioned behavior could transfer after regeneration, and through cannibalization of trained planaria. These studies, the responses, and replications have been collectively referred to as the "planarian controversy.

The goal was to develop a measure of level change for single case experimental research that met several practical requirements: (a) the measure is adaptable to designs with varying numbers of observations per, and across, phases; (b) the measure is adaptable to situations in which slope does and does not exist; (c) the measure has no ceiling, as is the limitation with commonly used overlap-based measures of effect size; and (d) the measure is computationally transparent and easily computed using widely available analysis tools (e.g.

Background: The ablation of advanced head and neck cancer often results in large three-dimensional defects that require free tissue transfer to optimally address functional and cosmetic issues. The subscapular system is a highly versatile donor site for flaps used for head and neck reconstruction. Traditional methods of harvesting subscapular flaps require repositioning and re-preparing, which significantly increases the operative time and prevents simultaneous harvesting of the flap.

The individuals served by behavior analysts are often funded by Medicaid, insurance companies, or private pay. The first two options usually require progress notes detailing graphically and quantitatively the behavioral outcomes. These progress notes usually come in the form of a written account of milestones achieved or barriers faced, graphical displays of behavioral data, and summary tables.

Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF-2) represents the complex issue of hearing restoration after treatment for a patient with bilateral acoustic neuromas. This scenario is difficult for skull base teams considering that all treatment options (including observation of tumors) pose a risk to the patient for further or total hearing loss. In this case of a patient with bilateral deafness, restoration options were auditory brainstem or cochlear implantation (CI).

Throughout the central nervous system extracellular adenosine serves important neuroprotective and neuromodulatory functions. However, current understanding of the in vivo regulation and effects of adenosine is limited by the spatial and temporal resolution of available measurement techniques. Here, we describe an enzyme-linked microelectrode array (MEA) with high spatial (7500 µm(2)) and temporal (4 Hz) resolution that can selectively measure extracellular adenosine through the use of self-referenced coating scheme that accounts for interfering substances and the enzymatic breakdown products of adenosine.

The desmosomal cadherin desmoglein-1 (DSG1) is an essential intercellular adhesion molecule that is altered in various human cutaneous disorders; however, its regulation and function in allergic disease remains unexplored. Herein, we demonstrate a specific reduction in DSG1 in esophageal biopsies from patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), an emerging allergic disorder characterized by chronic inflammation within the esophageal mucosa. Further, we show that DSG1 gene silencing weakens esophageal epithelial integrity, and induces cell separation and impaired barrier function (IBF) despite high levels of desmoglein-3.
