Opioids are known for their effects on the opioid and dopaminergic systems, in addition to neurocircuitry changes that mediate changes in behavior; however, new research lines are looking at complementary changes in the brain and gut. The gut-brain axis (GBA) is a bidirectional signaling process that permits feedback between the brain and gut and is altered in subjects with opioid use disorders.

Maternal separation with early weaning (MSEW) is a popular early life stress (ELS) model in rodents, which emulates childhood neglect through scheduled mother-offspring separation. Although variations of ELS models, including maternal separation and MSEW, have been published for the mouse species, the reported results are inconsistent. Corticosterone is considered the main stress hormone involved in regulating stress responses in rodents-yet generating a robust and reproducible corticosterone response in mouse models of ELS has been elusive.

Background: Simultaneous positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners and inserts are valuable tools for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring due to their complementary information. However, the integration of a PET system into an MRI scanner presents technical challenges for a distortion-free operation.
Purpose: We aim to develop a PET insert dedicated to breast imaging in combination with the 3T PET/MRI scanner Biograph mMR (Siemens Healthineers) as well as a brain PET insert for the 7T MRI scanner MAGNETOM Terra (Siemens Healthineers).

The effects of synthetic, free-amino acid diets, similar to those prescribed as supplements for (phenylketonuria) PKU patients, on gut microbiota and overall health are not well understood. In the current, multidisciplinary study, we examined the effects of a synthetically-derived, low-fiber, amino acid diet on behavior, cognition, gut microbiome composition, and inflammatory markers. Energy intake and partitioning are determined by many interacting factors and their prediction is the Achilles' heel of ration formulation. Extreme weather events can temporarily alter the structure of coastal systems and generate floodwaters that are contaminated with fecal indicator bacteria (FIB); however, every coastal system is unique, so identification of trends and commonalities in these episodic events is challenging. To improve our understanding of the resilience of coastal systems to the disturbance of extreme weather events, we monitored water quality, FIB at three stations within Clear Lake, an estuary between Houston and Galveston, and three stations in bayous that feed into the estuary. The technique utilizes optically induced conductance, where a focused laser beam excites electron-hole-pairs (EHPs) in a semiconductor thin film placed in the near-field of a microwave circuit. The generated EHPs create localized loss in the resonator and modulate the transmitted microwave signal, proportional to the local microwave electric field.

Dielectric metasurfaces made of high refractive index and low optical loss materials have emerged as promising platforms to achieve high-quality factor modes enabling strong light-matter interaction. Bound states in the continuum have shown potential to demonstrate narrow spectral resonances but often require asymmetric geometry and typically feature strong polarization dependence, complicating fabrication and limiting practical applications. We introduce a novel approach for designing high-quality bound states in the continuum using magnetic dipole resonances coupled to a mirror.

Climate change is transforming ecosystems and affecting ecosystem goods and services. Along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts of the southeastern United States, the frequency and intensity of extreme freeze events greatly influence whether coastal wetlands are dominated by freeze-sensitive woody plants (mangrove forests) or freeze-tolerant grass-like plants (salt marshes). Semiconductor nanowire arrays have been demonstrated as promising candidates for nanoscale optoelectronics applications due to their high detectivity as well as tunable photoresponse and bandgap over a wide spectral range. In the infrared (IR), where these attributes are more difficult to obtain, nanowires will play a major role in developing practical devices for detection, imaging and energy harvesting. Due to their geometry and periodic nature, vertical nanowire and nanopillar devices naturally lend themselves to waveguide and photonic crystal mode engineering leading to multifunctional materials and devices.
