We aimed to investigate the impact of pre-and/or neonatal exposition to caffeine on the neurodevelopment of male and female mice offspring.

This study developed a biodegrading additive based on nanosilica and modified by cellulase enzyme in the presence of citric acid and sodium citrate. The additive was tested as a facilitator for biodegradation of the commercial low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in soil. Enzyme immobilization was confirmed by enzymatic assays.

Automated identification of Chagas disease vectors using AlexNet pre-trained convolutional neural networks.

The 158 bug species that make up the subfamily Triatominae are the potential vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Despite recent progress in developing a picture-based automated system for identification of triatomines, an extensive and diverse image database is required for a broadly useful automated application for identifying these vectors. We evaluated performance of a deep-learning network (AlexNet) for identifying triatomine species from a database of dorsal images of adult insects.

Case Report: Concurrent pathogenic variants in the gene as a cause of sporadic partial lipodystrophy.

Introduction: Inherited lipodystrophies are a group of rare diseases defined by severe reduction in adipose tissue mass and classified as generalized or partial. We report a non-familial (sporadic) case of partial lipodystrophy caused by a novel genetic mechanism involving closely linked pathogenic variants in the gene.

Methods: A female adult with partial lipodystrophy and her parents were evaluated for gene variants across the exome under different mendelian inheritance models (autosomal dominant, recessive, compound heterozygous, and X-linked) to find pathogenic variants.

Seed beetles spend most of their lives within the seeds of host plants belonging to the Fabaceae family. Evidence suggests the cues that mediate pre-oviposition behaviour in Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the seeds and suggests differential abilities in environment sensing between sexes. Here, we tested whether VOCs from different legume species trigger different levels of attraction, whether females and males differ in their ability to respond to VOCs, and whether the seeds promoting different behaviours feature singular VOCs.

Recall, understanding, use, and impact of front-of-package warning labels on ultra-processed foods: A qualitative study with mothers of preschool children in Peru.

In its efforts to reduce increasing rates of obesity and nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases, Peru implemented front-of-package (FOP) warning labels (also called warnings) on processed and ultra-processed foods in June 2019. The goal was to inform consumers about high levels of sugars, saturated fats, sodium, and trans fats in packaged products. We designed a qualitative study to reveal the recall, understanding, and use of the warnings and to explore the perceived changes in purchasing behaviors among mothers of preschool children in Peru.

The effects of isolated game elements on adherence rates in food response inhibition training.

Food response inhibition training (food-RIT) is found to aid weight loss and reduce snacking of foods high in sugar, salt and fat. However, these interventions suffer from a lack of adherence, with gamification proposed as a solution to increase engagement. The effect of gamification is unclear, however, with a lack of research investigating the effects of single game elements in improving adherence to interventions.

Pharmacological treatment of obesity is passing through many changes in the last decades; different agents have been approved, and newer options are leaning towards higher efficacy and a more favourable safety profile; however, medications approved for a longer time are still available and useful for many patients. This document is an 2024 Update Position Statement of Specialists from the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (Abeso) and the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM), with the aim of reviewing all the approved medications for the management of obesity in Brazil (sibutramine, orlistat, liraglutide, semaglutide and bupropion/naltrexone fixed dose), with the addition of tirzepatide, that is approved in other countries and likely approved soon in Brazil. The review is focused on efficacy, safety profile and the impact of drugs (based on existing studies) on different comorbidities.

Orthopedic or Surgical Treatment in Gartland Type II Supracondylar Humerus Fractures: A Systematic Review.

Background: There is a broad consensus among orthopedic surgeons in the treatment of Gartland type I supracondylar humerus fractures (conservative) and Gartland type III (surgical) fractures, but there is controversy regarding the treatment of choice for Gartland type II fractures. The aim was to analyze the existing current evidence on the choice of surgical or conservative treatment of Gartland type II supracondylar humerus fractures.

Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of deltamethrin in dogs through exposure to commercial collars over 8 months.

Ion channel modulator DPI-201-106 significantly enhances antitumor activity of DNA damage response inhibitors in glioblastoma.

Background: Glioblastoma, a lethal high-grade glioma, has not seen improvements in clinical outcomes in nearly 30 years. Ion channels are increasingly associated with tumorigenesis, and there are hundreds of brain-penetrant drugs that inhibit ion channels, representing an untapped therapeutic resource. The aim of this exploratory drug study was to screen an ion channel drug library against patient-derived glioblastoma cells to identify new treatments for brain cancer.

High-Flow Nasal Oxygen vs Noninvasive Ventilation in Patients With Acute Respiratory Failure: The RENOVATE Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) are commonly used respiratory support therapies for patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF).

Objective: To assess whether HFNO is noninferior to NIV on the rates of endotracheal intubation or death at 7 days in 5 patient groups with ARF.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This noninferiority, randomized clinical trial enrolled hospitalized adults (aged ≥18 years; classified as 5 patient groups with ARF: nonimmunocompromised with hypoxemia, immunocompromised with hypoxemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] exacerbation with respiratory acidosis, acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema [ACPE], or hypoxemic COVID-19, which was added as a separate group on June 26, 2023) at 33 hospitals in Brazil between November 2019 and November 2023 (final follow-up: April 26, 2024).
