Diagnostic challenges of high-grade myeloid malignancies with partial plasmacytoid dendritic cell differentiation: report of two cases with literature review.

The diagnosis of myeloid neoplasms with plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC) differentiation can be challenging due to immunophenotypic overlap requiring detailed characterization by flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry. We describe two patients with a history of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) and myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasm (MDS/MPN) who presented years later with leukocytosis, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and cachexia, with rapid clinical deterioration and death. Lymph node biopsy specimens revealed involvement by myeloid sarcoma with prominent pDC differentiation.

Multimorbidity patterns, sociodemographic characteristics, and mortality: Data science insights from low-resource settings.

Multimorbidity data is typically analysed by tallying disease counts, which overlooks nuanced relationships among conditions. We identified clusters of multimorbidity and subpopulations with varying risks and examined their association with all-cause mortality using a data-driven approach. We analysed 8-year follow-up data of people ≥35 years who were part of the CRONICAS Cohort Study, a multisite cohort from Peru.

Photophysical and photochemical studies were carried out to examine the photoreactivity of etheno adducts, 1,N-ethenoadenine (εdA) and 1,N-ethenoguanine (εdG), in the presence of two well-known photosensitizers acting by Type I and/or Type II mechanisms such as 4-carboxybenzophenone (CBP) and rose Bengal (RB), respectively. Steady-state photolysis experiments combined with HPLC and mass spectroscopy measurements lead to photoproducts that correspond to the repaired nucleosides. To determine the mechanism of this photooxidation processes, phosphorescence spectroscopy, direct detection of singlet oxygen luminescence and laser flash photolysis were carried out.

Early life stress (ELS) can negatively impact health, increasing the risk of stress-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Importantly, PTSD disproportionately affects women, emphasizing the critical need to explore how sex differences influence the genetic and metabolic neurobiological pathways underlying trauma-related behaviors. This study uses the limited bedding and nesting (LBN) paradigm to model ELS and investigate its sex-specific effects on fear memory formation.

Disturbance rejection-based adaptive non-singular fast terminal sliding mode control for a quadrotor under severe turbulent wind.

This paper presents the design of a disturbance rejection-based control strategy for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle subject to model uncertainties and external disturbances described by turbulent wind gusts of severe intensity. First, an extended state observer is introduced to supply full-state and total disturbance estimations within a fixed time regardless of initial estimation errors. Then, an adaptive non-singular fast terminal sliding mode controller with a single-gain structure is proposed to reduce the tuning complexity and drive the pose of the rotorcraft while providing practical finite-time convergence, robustness to bounded external disturbances, non-overestimation of its control gain, and chattering attenuation.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HPV and cytological alterations in the transgender population and contribute to the development of public policies.

Methods: A descriptive study was conducted in a transgender outpatient clinic in Vitória, Espírito Santo state, between 2018 and 2021. Data were collected through interviews and information from medical records.

Introduction: Smoking cessation is important for men and women diagnosed with cancer. Oncology clinicians should encourage all patients to quit and offer resources to help them do so, following the 5As framework (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange follow-up).

Method: This study tests gender differences in self-reported receipt of the 5As by an oncology provider among 306 recently-diagnosed male and female cancer patients.

The Right Ventricle and Exercise Capacity in Adults with Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot: Passive Bystander or Active Participant?

Exercise intolerance is a hallmark symptom in adults with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). This may be attributed to the disease-related impairment in RV systolic function, augmentation in right ventricular (RV) load, and their combined effect on altering left ventricular (LV) hemodynamics. To further elucidate these mechanisms, we examined oxygen uptake (VO) by indirect-calorimetry and cardiac hemodynamics by echocardiography in 34 TOF (48 ± 14 yrs) and 29 healthy controls (41 ± 15 yrs), at rest and during exercise.

Exploring the long-term impact of a nurse-midwife mentorship intervention in Neno district, Malawi: a secondary data analysis of maternal and neonatal complications.

Background: There is critical need to strengthen the global nursing and midwifery workforce. This is especially true in Malawi where they are the primary providers of obstetric and neonatal care. In Neno district, Malawi, in 2017, we implemented an intensive training and longitudinal bedside mentorship intervention for nurses and midwives.

Recommendations for the optimal introduction of novel antibiotics to treat uncomplicated gonorrhoea in the face of increasing antimicrobial resistance: a case study with zoliflodacin.

New, first-in-class oral antibiotics like zoliflodacin, developed in a public-private partnership, require an optimal introduction strategy while ensuring antibiotic stewardship. Zoliflodacin, given as a single dose for uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhoea, recently demonstrated non-inferiority to ceftriaxone plus azithromycin and safety in a phase 3 randomised controlled trial. Following regulatory approval, zoliflodacin could improve sexually transmitted infection (STI) management and help address the threat of untreatable gonorrhoea, as levels of resistance to current first-line treatments increase.

LPDE biodegradation promoted by a novel additive based on silica nanoparticles: Structural, microbial and ecotoxicological characterization.

This study developed a biodegrading additive based on nanosilica and modified by cellulase enzyme in the presence of citric acid and sodium citrate. The additive was tested as a facilitator for biodegradation of the commercial low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in soil. Enzyme immobilization was confirmed by enzymatic assays.

Differential Methylation of CYP11B1 in Girls with High DHEAS Levels and correlation with 11-Oxyandrogen levels: a pilot study.

Introduction: Premature adrenarche in girls is defined biochemically by an increase in adrenal androgen (DHEAS) levels above the age-specific reference range before age 8 years. Recently, increased levels of 11-oxyandrogens have also been reported in girls with premature adrenarche. Epigenetic modifications, specifically CpG methylation, may affect gene expression and/or activity of steroidogenic enzymes during developmental changes in adrenal androgen secretion.
