Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Boyce Thompson Institute, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA.

Metabolites derived from the intestinal microbiota, including bile acids (BA), extensively modulate vertebrate physiology, including development, metabolism, immune responses and cognitive function. However, to what extent host responses balance the physiological effects of microbiota-derived metabolites remains unclear. Here, using untargeted metabolomics of mouse tissues, we identified a family of BA-methylcysteamine (BA-MCY) conjugates that are abundant in the intestine and dependent on vanin 1 (VNN1), a pantetheinase highly expressed in intestinal tissues.

Genetic markers of the Y chromosome are powerful tools for investigating paternal ancestry and are widely used in population and forensic genetics. However, in order to obtain statistics with a higher degree of certainty using these markers, it is necessary to obtain haplotypic frequencies from a representative database, as well as knowing the diversity and structure of the population. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity of a sample of 1114 unrelated men from three states in the Northeast of Brazil: Paraíba, Pernambuco and Ceará, through the analysis of 23 Y-STRs and to contribute to the expansion of the Brazilian database on these markers.

Antibiotic and Surgical Treatment of Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis: The Histopathological Evidence.

Antibiotics (Basel)

November 2024

Clinic of Endocrinology and Metabolism Diseases, ASFO, 33170 Pordenone, Italy.

Osteomyelitis is one of the most frequent infections of the diabetic foot, accounting for 20-70% of foot infections. The treatment of osteomyelitis continues to be debated, and the possibility of performing conservative surgery associated with targeted antibiotic treatment allows for reductions in the amount of bone removed, the resolution of osteomyelitis, and a reduction in the changes in the biomechanics of the foot. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of osteomyelitis treatment with a combination of antibiotic and surgical procedures based on a histopathological analysis of the infected bone and margins.

Based on the established neuroprotective properties of indole-based compounds and their significant potential as multi-targeted therapeutic agents, a series of synthetic indole-phenolic compounds was evaluated as multifunctional neuroprotectors. Each compound demonstrated metal-chelating properties, particularly in sequestering copper ions, with quantitative analysis revealing approximately 40% chelating activity across all the compounds. In cellular models, these hybrid compounds exhibited strong antioxidant and cytoprotective effects, countering reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the Aβ(25-35) peptide and its oxidative byproduct, hydrogen peroxide, as demonstrated by quantitative analysis showing on average a 25% increase in cell viability and a reduction in ROS levels to basal states.
