High-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) is a widely used chemotherapy regimen for hematologic malignancies such as lymphomas and acute lymphoblastic leukemia, but its use can lead to adverse effects, including acute kidney injury (AKI), impaired liver function, and mucositis, causing extended hospital stays and delayed subsequent chemotherapy. Our study aimed to investigate the predictive factors for renal toxicities associated with HD-MTX in Thai patients undergoing treatment for hematologic malignancies. We enrolled 80 patients who underwent MTX-containing regimens, analyzing 132 chemotherapy cycles.

June 2024

Chulalongkorn University Biomedical Imaging Group, Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

The objective is to evaluate the performance of blood test results, radiomics, and a combination of the two data types on the prediction of the 24-h oxygenation support need for the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. In this retrospective cohort study, COVID-19 patients with confirmed real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assay (RT-PCR) test results between February 2020 and August 2021 were investigated. Initial blood cell counts, chest radiograph, and the status of oxygenation support used within 24 h were collected (n = 290; mean age, 45 ± 19 years; 125 men).

Anti-inflammatory effect of curcuminoids and their analogs in hyperosmotic human corneal limbus epithelial cells.

BMC Complement Med Ther

April 2024

Department of Chemistry and Center of Excellence for Innovation in Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Ramkhamhaeng University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Background: To assess the efficacy of curcuminoids (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin [BDC]) and their analogs (tetrahydrocurcumin [THC], tetrahydrodemethoxycurcumin [THDC], tetrahydrobisdemethoxycurcumin) in reducing inflammatory cytokines and their toxicity to primary human corneal limbal epithelial cells, these cells were cultured and exposed to these compounds.

Methods: The PrestoBlue assay assessed cell viability after treatment. Anti-inflammatory effects on hyperosmotic cells were determined using real-time polymerase chain reaction and significance was gauged using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's tests, considering p-values < 0.

Introduction: Apomorphine, a potent dopamine agonist, is a therapeutic option for patients with Parkinson's disease and motor fluctuations. However, the adoption of and adherence to this therapy have been limited by the need for complex delivery devices and specialized care as well as resource consumption, posing challenges for new physicians. Thailand is a unique example of a developing nation that has successfully implemented and continued the use of this therapy by employing cooperative technology that has dramatically enhanced apomorphine delivery services.

Objective: To determine the mean contact pressure, peak contact pressure, and mean contact area of the lateral tibiofemoral joint in lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) with tension on the graft in tibial neutral and external rotation.

Methods: A total of eight Thiel-embalmed cadaveric knees were prepared and divided into two groups (4 knees in each group): the LET-NR group (lateral extra-articular tenodesis tension in neutral rotation) and (2) the LET-ER group (lateral extra-articular tenodesis tension in external rotation). Each knee was prepared according to the corresponding technique.

Enhanced glucose uptake in insulin-sensitive tissues is one of the therapeutic strategies to ameliorate hyperglycemia and maintain glucose homeostasis in type 2 diabetes. This study disclosed the role of fungal depsidones in glucose uptake and the underlying mechanism in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Depsidones, including nidulin, nornidulin, and unguinol, isolated from , stimulate glucose uptake in adipocytes.

Purpose: To determine the effect of hip external rotation or extension/adduction on minimizing the ischiofemoral distance (IFD) and assess the correlation between cadaveric and fluoroscopic IFD measurements in different hip positions.

Methods: This cadaveric study involved 33 hip joints from 17 embalmed cadavers. IFD, the distance between the lesser trochanter and lateral ischium, was measured in different hip positions: neutral, external rotation at 30°, and external rotation at 60° with the hip in both neutral extension and adduction as well as 10° hip extension and 10° hip adduction.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the outcomes of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) using direct decompression versus indirect decompression in patients with degenerative lumbar diseases.
  • Results showed that while clinical improvements were observed in both groups, there were no significant differences in outcomes between the two methods, apart from a greater increase in the cross-sectional area of the thecal sac with direct decompression.
  • Indirect decompression resulted in lower blood loss and shorter surgery time, suggesting it may be a sufficient method for symptom relief without needing direct decompression for certain patients.

Article Synopsis
  • DICER1 mutations and PTEN alterations are linked to thyroid diseases and cancers and were analyzed in a study involving 117 thyroid fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) from two medical institutions.
  • The study found that 30.8% had DICER1 mutations (mostly younger females) and 69.2% had PTEN alterations (older females), with both groups showing signs of multinodular disease.
  • Although both DICER1 and PTEN groups exhibited overlapping cytologic features, minor differences were noted, such as more papillary patterns in DICER1 and oncocytic changes in PTEN, enhancing awareness for identifying patients at risk for thyroid cancer.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is accompanied by activated neuro-immune pathways, increased physiosomatic and chronic fatigue-fibromyalgia (FF) symptoms. The most severe MDD phenotype, namely major dysmood disorder (MDMD), is associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative life events (NLEs) which induce cytokines/chemokines/growth factors. To delineate the impact of ACE + NLEs on physiosomatic and FF symptoms in first episode (FE)-MDMD, and examine whether these effects are mediated by immune profiles.
