Water and wastewater treatment applications stand to benefit immensely from the design and development of new materials based on silica nanoparticles and their derivatives. Nanosilica possesses unique properties, including low toxicity, chemical inertness, and excellent biocompatibility, and can be developed from a variety of sustainable precursor materials. Herein, we provide an account of the recent advances in the synthesis and utilization of nanosilica for wastewater treatment.

Oncostatin M (OSM) is a pleiotropic cytokine of the interleukin (IL)-6 family that contributes to the progression of chronic liver disease. Here we investigated the role of OSM in the development and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The role of OSM was investigated in (1) selected cohorts of NAFLD/NASH HCC patients, (2) liver cancer cells exposed to human recombinant OSM or stably transfected to overexpress human OSM, (3) murine HCC xenografts, and (4) a murine NASH-related model of hepatic carcinogenesis.

The inducible T-cell co-stimulator (ICOS) is a T-cell receptor that, once bound to ICOS ligand (ICOSL) expressed on several cell types including the B-cell lineage, plays a decisive role in adaptive immunity by regulating the interplay between B and T cells. In addition to its immunomodulatory functions, we have shown that ICOS/ICOSL signalling can inhibit the activity of osteoclasts, unveiling a novel mechanism of lymphocyte-bone cells interactions. ICOS and ICOSL can also be found as soluble forms, namely sICOS and sICOSL.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been pointed out as a candidate for improving melanoma treatment. Nanotechnology application in PDT has increased its efficacy by reducing side effects. Herein, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) conjugated with verteporfin (Ver-MSNs), in use with PDT, were administered in mice to evaluate their efficacy on lymphoangiogenesis and micrometastasis in melanoma.

The requirements for analytical tools are changing due to the global production chain, the increasing cases of adulteration, and the growing trend towards consumption of plant-based food products worldwide. The assessment of bioactivity of natural foods is currently not a quality criterion, and a paradigm shift is postulated. A non-targeted effect-directed profiling by high-performance thin-layer chromatography hyphenated with five different effect-directed assays was developed exemplarily for the puree and juice products of mango L.

A rapid and straightforward approach was developed for screening the acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase (ChE) inhibitory activity of 44 Iranian medicinal plant extracts at laboratory scale. After a fast ChE inhibitory pre-testing of samples applied as band pattern, 40 out of the 44 Iranian medicinal plant extracts were selected. These were adjusted in the application volume depending on their inhibition activity, applied on both plate sides and simultaneously developed in a horizontal developing chamber.

An on-surface multi-purpose autosampler was built for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based on the autoTLC-MS interface, taking advantage of open-source hard- and software developments as well as 3D printing. Termed autoTLC-LC-MS system, it is introduced for orthogonal hyphenation of normal phase high-performance thin-layer chromatography with reversed phase high-performance LC (HPLC) and high-resolution MS (HRMS). For verification of its functionality, a multi-class antibiotic mixture was applied as a calibration band pattern on an adsorbent layer and detected by the Bacillus subtilis bioassay.

It is still a challenge to discover and identify individual bioactive compounds directly in multicomponent mixtures. Current workflows are too tedious for routine use. Hence, the hyphenation of separation and detection techniques is a powerful tool to maximize the information obtained by a single sample run.

High thermal conductivity materials show promise for thermal mitigation and heat removal in devices. However, shrinking the length scales of these materials often leads to significant reductions in thermal conductivities, thus invalidating their applicability to functional devices. In this work, we report on high in-plane thermal conductivities of 3.

Antibiotic residues in food pose a major threat to the health of humans and animals worldwide. Their trace-level analysis is still too time- and cost-intensive to be adequately covered in routine analysis. Thus, a new high-throughput planar solid-phase extraction method has been developed for rapid screening of 66 antibiotics.

How does a small change in the structure of a phospholipid affect its supramolecular assembly? In aqueous suspensions, the substitution of one ester linkage in DPPC (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) by an ether linkage alters its phase behaviour completely. To unravel the effect of replacing a phospholipid's ester linkage by an ether linkage in lipid monolayers, we characterized pure monolayers of the model lipid DPPC and its sn-2 ether analogue PHPC (1-palmitoyl-2-O-hexadecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) as well as mixtures of both by measurements of surface pressure-molecular area (π-Amol) isotherms. In addition, we used infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) to study lipid condensation, lipid chain orientation, headgroup hydration, and lipid miscibility in all samples.

Proteins are widely explored as therapeutic agents, but some issues remain alive in their delivery versus target tissues and organs. Especially in the case of water-labile proteins, they undergo rapid failure if not properly stored or once they have encountered the biological environment. In this framework, delivery systems can be very useful to protect such proteins both during storage and during their administration.

SINEUPs are long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that contain a SINE element, and which up-regulate the translation of target mRNA. They have been studied in a wide range of applications, as both biological and therapeutic tools, although the underpinning molecular mechanism is unclear. Here, we focused on the sub-cellular distribution of target mRNAs and SINEUP RNAs, performing co-transfection of expression vectors for these transcripts into human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293T/17), to investigate the network of translational regulation.

Differing sensitivity is the main obstacle for a direct combination of HPTLC with NMR spectroscopy. A sufficient amount of the isolated compound zone must be provided by HPTLC for subsequent offline NMR detection (HPTLC//NMR). To fill the gap, a straightforward procedure was developed using the same analytical HPTLC system for both bioprofiling and isolation of bioactive zones from multicomponent mixtures.

Complement deficiencies are rare and often underdiagnosed primary immunodeficiencies that may be associated with invasive bacterial diseases. Serious infections with encapsulated organisms (mainly Streptococcus pneumoniae, but also Neisseria meningitides and Haemophilus influenzae type B) are frequent in patients with a deficiency of the second component of complement (C2), but no data are available on long-term follow-up. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term clinical outcome and the importance of an early diagnosis and subsequent infection prophylaxis in C2 deficiency.

Skin melanoma is one of the most aggressive and difficult-to-treat human malignancies, characterized by poor survival rates, thus requiring urgent novel therapeutic approaches. Although metabolic reprogramming has represented so far, a cancer hallmark, accumulating data indicate a high plasticity of cancer cells in modulating cellular metabolism to adapt to a heterogeneous and continuously changing microenvironment, suggesting a novel therapeutic approach for dietary manipulation in cancer therapy. To this aim, we exposed melanoma cells to combined nutrient-restriction/sorafenib.
