Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are paving the way to clean energy conversion, relying on efficient oxygen-ion conductors with high ionic conductivity coupled with a negligible electronic contribution. Doped rare earth aluminates are promising candidates for SOFC electrolytes due to their high ionic conductivity. However, they often suffer from p-type electronic conductivity at operating temperatures above 500 °C under oxidizing conditions caused by the incorporation of oxygen into the lattice.

Optical biometers are routinely used to measure intraocular distances in ophthalmic applications such as cataract surgery planning or myopia monitoring. However, due to their high cost and reduced transportability, access to them for screening and surgical planning is still limited in low-resource and remote settings. To increase patients' access to optical biometry we propose a novel low-cost frequency-domain optical delay line (FD-ODL) based on an inexpensive stepper motor spinning a tilted mirror, for integration into a time-domain (TD)-biometer, amenable to a compact footprint.

The orientation of luminescent molecules in organic light-emitting diodes strongly influences device performance. However, our understanding of the factors controlling emitter orientation is limited as current measurements only provide ensemble-averaged orientation values. Here, we use single-molecule imaging to measure the transition dipole orientation of individual emitter molecules in a state-of-the-art thermally evaporated host and thereby obtain complete orientation distributions of the hyperfluorescence-terminal emitter C545T.

We study a model of a lipid bilayer membrane described by two order parameters: the chemical composition described using the Gaussian model and the spatial configuration described with the elastic deformation model of a membrane with a finite thickness or, equivalently, for an adherent membrane. We assume and explain on physical grounds the linear coupling between the two order parameters. Using the exact solution, we calculate the correlation functions and order parameter profiles.

Lithium metal-based solid-state batteries (SSBs) have attracted much attention due to their potentially higher energy densities and improved safety compared with lithium-ion batteries. One of the most promising solid electrolytes, garnet-type LiLaZrO (LLZO), has been investigated intensively in recent years. It enables the use of a lithium metal anode, but its application is still challenging because of lithium dendrites that grow at voids, cracks, and grain boundaries of sintered bodies during cycling of the battery cell.

Smartphones are now integral to many telehealth services that provide remote patients with an improved diagnostic standard of care. The ongoing management of burn wounds and scars is one area in which telehealth has been adopted, using video and photography to assess the repair process over time. However, a current limitation is the inability to evaluate scar stiffness objectively and repeatedly: an essential measurement for classifying the degree of inflammation and fibrosis.

Ordered mesoporous metal oxides with a high specific surface area, tailored porosity and engineered interfaces are promising materials for electrochemical applications. In particular, the method of evaporation-induced self-assembly allows the formation of nanocrystalline films of controlled thickness on polar substrates. In general, mesoporous materials have the advantage of benefiting from a unique combination of structural, chemical and physical properties.

Waste production associated with the use of non-degradable materials in packaging is a growing cause of environmental concern, with the polyurethane (PU) class being notorious for their lack of degradability. Herein, we incorporate photosensitive ortho-Nitrobenzyl units into PUs to achieve controllable photodegradability. We performed their photolysis in solution and thin films which can inform the design of degradable adhesives.

Hydrated acceptor-doped barium zirconate is a well-investigated proton conductor. In the analysis of most experimental studies, an ideal defect model is applied to fit the measured hydration data and obtain corresponding enthalpies and entropies. However, the data show a distinct deviation from ideal behaviour and thus defect interactions cannot be neglected.

The microwave spectrum of the fruit ester methyl valerate was recorded using two molecular jet Fourier transform spectrometers covering the frequency range from 2 to 40 GHz. Quantum chemical calculations yielded 11 minima for the anti ester configuration, among them two were identified in the experimental spectrum. The methyl group in the methoxy moiety undergoes internal rotation, leading to torsional splittings of all rotational transitions into doublets.

A gold-capped Janus particle suspended in a near-critical binary liquid mixture can self-propel under illumination. We have immobilized such a particle in a narrow channel and carried out a combined experimental and theoretical study of the non-equilibrium dynamics of a binary solvent around it - lasting from the very moment of switching illumination on until the steady state is reached. In the theoretical study we use both a purely diffusive and a hydrodynamic model, which we solve numerically.

Atomically defined nanographenes (NGs) feature size-dependent energy gaps induced by, and tuneable through, quantum confinement. Their energy-tunability and robustness make NGs appealing candidates as active elements in sensitized geometries, where NGs functionalize a metal oxide (MO) film with large-area-to-volume ratio. Despite the prominent relevance of NG/MO interfaces for developing novel architectures for solar energy conversion, to date, little information is available regarding the fundamentals of electron transfer (ET) processes taking place from NG donors to MO acceptors.

The interaction of light with matter at surfaces of dielectrics strongly depends on polarization. Here, we present the first infrared spectroscopic evidence for significant polarization effects in the spectroscopic detection of adsorbate vibrational frequencies. In addition to much larger peak intensities for p-polarized light relative to s-polarization, a small but distinct blue shift was identified for CO adsorbed at the surfaces of two prototype dielectric substrates, CeO2(111) and CaCO3(10.

Gas-phase IR spectra of carbon dioxide and methane are nowadays well understood, as a consequence of their pivotal roles in atmospheric- and astrochemistry. However, once those molecules are trapped in noble gas matrices, their spectroscopic properties become difficult to conceptualize. Still, such spectra provide valuable insights into the vibrational structure.

We performed time-resolved transient absorption and fluorescence anisotropy measurements in order to study tautomerization of porphycene in rigid polymer matrices at cryogenic temperatures. Studies were carried out in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The results prove that in all studied media hydrogen tunnelling plays a significant role in the double hydrogen transfer which becomes very sensitive to properties of the environment below approx.

Herein, it has been demonstrated how resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy can be employed to study the charge transfer dynamics in real-time during the temperature-induced oxidation of metallic tungsten. Application of high energy resolution schemes allowed distinguishing charge transfer to separate orbitals resulting from crystal field splitting. Based on the time-resolved studies, it was possible to determine the corresponding charge transfer rates.

Isoleucinol, a potential precursor to the essential α-amino acid isoleucine, has been studied using microwave spectroscopy from 2-26 GHz. The measurements between 18-26 GHz were performed with a newly developed segmented chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometer, which has reduced the cost of the instrument by half compared to a single pulse excitation and direct detection chirped-pulse microwave spectrometer in the same frequency range. The performance of the instrument has been demonstrated and found to be comparable to the previous design.

Multidirectional imaging flow cytometry (mIFC) extends conventional imaging flow cytometry (IFC) for the image-based measurement of 3D-geometrical features of particles. The innovative core is a flow rotation unit in which a vertical sample lamella is incrementally rotated by 90 degrees into a horizontal lamella. The required multidirectional views are generated by guiding all particles at a controllable shear flow position of the parabolic velocity profile of the capillary slit detection chamber.

Hysteresis in the current response to a varying gate voltage is a common spurious effect in carbon-based field effect transistors. Here, we use electric transport measurements to probe the charge transport in networks of armchair graphene nanoribbons with a width of either 5 or 9 carbon atoms, synthesized in a bottom-up approach using chemical vapor deposition. Our systematic study on the hysteresis of such graphene nanoribbon transistors, in conjunction with temperature-dependent transport measurements shows that the hysteresis can be fully accounted for by trapping/detrapping carriers in the SiO layer.

Modern polymeric hydrogels use reversible bonds to mimic biological functionalities. However, true biological materials benefit from several supramolecular elements and deliver multiple functions at the same time. To approach similar creation and control of multiple different functional elements in a synthetic soft material, we develop a model dual-network hydrogel in which multiple energy dissipating modes are formed by metal-ligand coordination and regulated by their association thermodynamics.
