Sustainable livestock production requires reducing competition for food and feed resources and increasing the utilization of food by-products in livestock feed. This study describes the establishment of an anaerobic batch culture model to simulate pig microbiota and evaluate the effects of a food by-product, wakame seaweed stalks, on microbial communities. We selected one of the nine media to support the growth of a bacterial community most similar in composition and diversity to that observed in pig donor feces.

We evaluated whether viable and non-viable Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus CRL1505 (Lr05V or Lr05NV, respectively) was able to improve emergency myelopoiesis induced by Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) infection. Adult Swiss-mice were orally treated with Lr05V or Lr05NV during five consecutive days. The Lr05V and Lr05NV groups and untreated control group received an intraperitoneal dose of cyclophosphamide (Cy-150 mg/kg).

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne virus first reported from humans in Nigeria in 1954. The first outbreak occurred in Micronesia followed by an outbreak in French Polynesia and another in Brazil when the virus was associated with numerous cases of severe neurological manifestations such as Guillain-Barre syndrome in adults and congenital zika syndrome in fetuses, particularly congenital microcephaly. Innate immunity is the first line of defense against ZIKV through triggering an antiviral immune response.

Here, we present a case of severe meningoencephalitis caused by combined infection with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis (LB) in a 25-year-old woman in a rural area of Zhambyl region, Kazakhstan. She presented with fever, nausea, vomiting, weakness, sweating, severe headache, arthralgia, and malaise. The course of illness was further complicated by encephalitis with symmetric lesions of the midbrain cerebral peduncles and serous meningitis.

Previously, we demonstrated that LOC1, originally isolated from fresh tea leaves, was able to improve epithelial barrier integrity in in vitro models, suggesting that this strain is an interesting probiotic candidate. In this work, we aimed to continue characterizing the potential probiotic properties of the LOC1 strain, focusing on its immunomodulatory properties in the context of innate immunity triggered by Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activation. These studies were complemented by comparative and functional genomics analysis to characterize the bacterial genes involved in the immunomodulatory capacity.

Previously, we demonstrated that post-immunobiotics derived from Lactobacillus gasseri TMT36, TMT39, and TMT40 strains (HK36, HK39 and HK40, respectively) differentially regulated Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3)-mediated antiviral respiratory immunity in infant mice. In this work, we investigated whether the HK36, HK39 and HK40 nasal treatments were able to improve the resistance against primary respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and secondary pneumococcal pneumonia. Our results demonstrated that the three treatments increased the resistance to primary viral infection by reducing variations in body weight, RSV titers and lung damage of infected infant mice.
