Objective: To report a case of classic clozapine-induced systemic lupus erythematosus that also developed on rechallenge.
Case Summary: A 32-year-old white woman diagnosed with schizophrenia presented in 1996 with clinical characteristics and laboratory markers consistent with drug-induced lupus (DIL). Clozapine, started 1 year prior, was withdrawn, with complete biological and clinical remission within 3 months.

The folate receptor is overexpressed in a broad spectrum of malignant tumors and represents an attractive target for selective delivery of anticancer agents to folate receptor-expressing tumors. This study examines folate-lipid conjugates as a means of enhancing the tumor selectivity of liposome-encapsulated drugs in a mouse lymphoma model. Folate-derivatized polyethylene glycol (PEG3350)-distearoyl-phosphatidylethanolamine was post-loaded at various concentrations into the following preparations: radiolabeled PEGylated liposomes, PEGylated liposomes labeled in the aqueous compartment with dextran fluorescein, and PEGylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD, Doxil).

Objective: Patients with T-cell (CD3+) large granular lymphocyte (LGL) leukemia have a high prevalence of autoantibodies and associated autoimmune diseases. Sjogren's syndrome may not be diagnosed unless specifically looked for. We set to determine the prevalence of Sjogren's syndrome in LGL leukemia and its cytokine profile.

In a small village founded by few ancestors, three mutations in GJB2, the gene for connexin 26, are responsible for the high prevalence of deafness. A total of 15% of healthy individuals from a random sample were carriers of either 35Gdel (7.8%), W77R (2.

The neuromuscular weakness associated with myasthenia gravis (MG) can be transiently relieved by pharmacological inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Here, we expand the anticholinesterase repertoire to include 2'-O-methyl-protected antisense oligonucleotides targeted to AChE mRNA (EN101). Using stimulated-single fiber electromyography, we show that EN101 treatment of rats with experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG), improved the mean consecutive difference (MCD) and blocking for 24h.

Tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) regulates vascular contractility through the low-density lipoprotein-related receptor (LRP), and this effect is inhibited by plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1). We now report that tPA-mediated vasocontraction also requires the integrin alphavbeta3. tPA-induced contraction of rat aortic rings is inhibited by the Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptide and by monoclonal anti-alphavbeta3 antibody.

Background: Lifestyle factors relevant to coronary risk factors differ between Palestinians and Israelis. Both have been exposed, albeit differently, to the stressors of the long-term conflict. We determined the incidence of coronary heart disease, previously unreported in Palestinians, in these Mediterranean populations and made international comparisons with the MONICA Programme.

Background: Mammography is the principal breast cancer imaging technique; however, sensitivity is reduced, especially in dense breast tissue. Magnetic resonance imaging is increasingly used in the detection and characterization of breast cancers. The high sensitivity (95-100%) of MRI is consistently observed, and in many situations, MRI is proving superior to classical forms of imaging.

The role of lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of lung fibrosis is not clear, but the weight of the evidence supports a pro-fibrotic effect for lymphocytes. The high-affinity interleukin-2 receptor (haIL-2R) is expressed on activated, but not quiescent, T lymphocytes. This selective expression of haIL-2R provides the basis for therapeutic strategies that target IL-2R-expressing cells.

In Israel, as in several countries of the Mediterranean basin, beta-thalassemia is frequent among Arabs, and many different mutations in the beta globin gene have been identified. In a single Arab village, three different thalassemia mutations, as well as the sickle-cell mutation, were characterized. Using genealogical data as well as the results of screening in the village population, we were able to demonstrate/speculate on how mutations were introduced into the village and how they later expanded.

Aim: Studies on vaccines against the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis have produced conflicting results, but no consideration has been given to the role of different adjuvants in these vaccines. We have previously shown that an intra-chamber challenge with heat-killed P. gingivalis was modified by immunization with different adjuvants.

Introduction: The association between staghorn calculus of the kidney long-standing and urothelial tumors of the renal pelvis is well documented. We describe 3 patients with urothelial cancer in a kidney who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).
Patients And Methods: Retrospective analysis of our series of more than 500 PCNLs revealed 3 patients in whom urothelial cancer of the renal pelvis was diagnosed during or following percutaneous stone removal.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of noncompliance and factors that influence poor adherence to immunosuppressive drug regimens among kidney transplant recipients.
Methods: We reviewed immunosuppressive drug compliance in 79 posttransplant patients. Patient self-report and low plasma calcineurin inhibitor levels served as indicators of noncompliance.

Since laparoscopic nephrectomy was introduced by Clayman et al, it has been doubted whether it should be employed in patients with extensive perirenal fibrosis. In this series, 20 consecutive patients underwent laparoscopic nephrectomy for obstructed, infected, non-functioning kidneys. Preoperative assessment included urine cultures, abdominal sonography, intravenous pyelography, computerized tomography and a renal scan.

Background: The Jewish population of Israel consumes a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids with a relatively low proportion of saturated fat, has a small alcohol intake and a lipid profile characterized by low HDL-cholesterol and high lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)). It is therefore of interest to compare occurrence rates of coronary heart disease (CHD) with those elsewhere.
Methods: The community-based event rate of CHD [comprising acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and CHD death] and case-fatality was determined in 1995-1997 by active surveillance among Jewish residents of the Jerusalem District aged 25-64 according to standardized WHO-MONICA criteria.

Background: In older populations, oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT) is underused by physicians, mainly because of fear of bleeding complications. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of bleeding complications and associated risk factors in a large heterogeneous group of older patients.
Methods: Combined retrospective and prospective cohort study conducted in geriatric and internal medicine departments.

Design/methods: A retrospective matched case-control study was preformed at a perinatal centre. Study infants were preterm infants (23-35 wk) whose mothers had received PC emphasizing the importance of HMF.

Background: Surgical debridement with flap repositioning may result in significant gingival recession. This manuscript reports on a series of cases that were treated for deep periodontal pockets by flap debridement surgery combined with subepitheial connective tissue graft for the prevention of postoperative recession.
Methods: Fourteen patients (27 teeth) with deep periodontal pockets and bone loss in the mandibular central incisors area underwent flap debridement combined with subepithelial connective tissue graft.
