This investigation aimed to develop a radiographic 3D cephalometric index to grade severity of dentofacial deformity in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), and to perform a validation against expert evaluations. Data were collected from a population-based Nordic JIA cohort of 240 patients that received a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan approximately 17 years after onset of JIA. The cohort was randomized into two groups: A baseline group for establishing the index (n = 210) and a test group (n = 30).

Background: Patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with severe odontogenic infections are often hospitalized for surgical drainage and medical management. However, inpatient management of these patients can be financially burdensome. While medical indications for hospital admission are well established, it remains unclear if patient insurance status is associated with admission.

Article Synopsis
  • - Myhre syndrome is a rare genetic disorder linked to mutations in the SMAD4 gene, with recent studies from Massachusetts General Hospital highlighting its complexities through evaluations of 47 patients.
  • - The findings indicate that symptom progression occurs in all patients after at least 5 years of observation, with different SMAD4 variants associated with varying health outcomes, particularly regarding hearing loss and aortic hypoplasia.
  • - There is a call for more research and evidence-based guidelines to improve understanding and treatment of Myhre syndrome, especially given the serious complications observed, including deaths related to cardiovascular issues.

Sfrp4 is required to maintain Ctsk-lineage periosteal stem cell niche function.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

November 2023

Division of Bone and Mineral Research, Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA 02115.

We have previously reported that the cortical bone thinning seen in mice lacking the Wnt signaling antagonist is due in part to impaired periosteal apposition. The periosteum contains cells which function as a reservoir of stem cells and contribute to cortical bone expansion, homeostasis, and repair. However, the local or paracrine factors that govern stem cells within the periosteal niche remain elusive.

Purpose: Sleep impairment is associated with many chronic pain disorders. While there is an association between chronic pain and sleep disturbances, little is known about the influence of pharmacotherapy for chronic pain conditions, particularly chronic opioid therapy, on sleep. This study aimed to 1) compare the sleep quality (SQ) in patients with two different pain conditions-chronic body pain and chronic orofacial pain; 2) assess the correlation of SQ and pain intensity; and 3) evaluate the association between pharmacotherapy and SQ.

Purpose: Oral-maxillofacial surgeons (OMSs) are frequent prescribers of opioid analgesics. It remains unclear if prescription patterns differ for urban versus rural patients, given potential differences in access to and delivery of care. This study aimed to characterize urban-rural differences in opioid analgesic prescriptions to patients in Massachusetts by OMSs from 2011 to 2021.

Objective: Synovial chondromatosis (SC) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a synovial membrane disease characterized by the formation of cartilaginous nodules (CN), that may erode the skull base. Historically, cases with skull base involvement have been treated with open surgery. We report a case of TMJ SC with skull base perforation treated and repaired via minimally invasive TMJ arthroscopy and describe the advanced endoscopic operative maneuvers performed.
